Hi everybody. I am a lover of unusual warbirds, like many other people. I have began designing a Boulton Paul Defiant, and am wondering if it turns out well, would there be any intrest out there if it were a kit. It is going to be small and simple. I am building a Skyshark Skyraider, and even though it is going very well, I am starting to think that big construction projects are not my bag. It is 46" span, for os 25 to os .40 la engines. It is cad drawn and looks sharp so far. You dig? Or no?

there was one featured in RCM some yrs ago. The plans are probably available if you know what to look for.

RCM does in fact have plans. It is about 72" span I think. I called a kit cutter about it, and it was $400! So think about $400 plus retracts, engine, etc. etc. Mega bucks. Mega building. No thanks. I am not at that kind of comitment level. Anyway, I am making some progress. The wing is done, the tail is done. Starting work on the fuselage. Then I will probably go back to the wing and add mechanical retracts...........

Seems to me Frank Baker had a plan for one published in Model Aviation. I think it was 25 sized. I've seen the prototype fly a few times.

A very unusual aircraft, apparently it was obsolete very shortly after it entered combat. They subsequently turned it into a night fighter. My grandfather designed the rear turret at Vickers Armstrong or rolls Royce (can't remember which company he was working for when he designed it, and he worked for both. Also part of design team for lancaster bomber turrets which his future son in law ended up sitting in during WWII)

Just thought you may be interested.

Guys,
I have the RCM article about the Defiant. It was designed by Mr. Anderson in Minneapolis. I build his KI55 (actually, I built as a KI36) that was another RCM build he put together. Fantastic set of plans. Cut all the parts out myself. Thats the easiest part of the plan. So, forget the $400. He's the man when it comes to scratch building. As far as I am concerned, none better.

Nice pick. I have a wood and a composite 48"span Hurricane and I would like to point out the Defiant would have similar model problems as the Hurricane.

Build with these in mind.

Model will be very tail heavy, build tail light. Mount everything you can on or forward of the CG. With retracts, the 46"span model will begin to gain weight rapidly, try to keep model under 5.25 lbs. CG'ed if possible.

Avoid early lift off and you may have to land with a bid of airspeed.

Post a pic of the finished model.

Good luck

The Defiant was perhaps the final installment of the two seat fighter idea that persisted from the first world war. heavier/slower& with no forward armament it was a sitting duck once enemy pilots figured it out . rear attacks of course were suicidal but easily avoided. it did a good job later of night fighting &coastal patrols.

Steve,
Great looking 109! I havn't seen a kit for a 109F in this scale before. Did you scratch build this bird? The manifold looks great. Where did you get the wheels for it? Those look great too! I am very impressed.

Ok guys the design work has been finished on the Defiant and the first set of plans have been printed. Although, the entire idea has changed. I resized the airplane down to 1/12 scale, it has a 39 -3/4" wing span with 256 sqin of wing area. It is very sharp and the protoype will be under construction shorty. Maybe I should do a build thread on this one? There will be no gear, and it will be for .15 to .25 two stroke, or convert it over to electric power. I have never seen a RC Defiant, (in person) so I am really looking foward to this. I am hoping to make plans, canopies and cowls available to you all soon... Stay tuned.

For any and all Defiant afficianados, Skyshark R/C is developing a kit for this bird as we speak. I forget the exact span but I think it is somewhere in the mid 70 inch region. More info in the Skyshark forum at RCSB if you're interested.
