I know this is off topic (Not Jet related), but I am in the US at the moment. i came over here to fly in the Collings Foundation B17.

www.collingsfoundation.org

I went to my friends place in Monterey CA and he flew us in his Beech Bonanza to the Concord CA airport where the Collings aircraft were.
when i got there the B17 flight was full. As I could not be there the next day, I had to fly in their dual control P51. of course I was very disapointed (Grin). I had the best time of my life. I was allowed to fly it and did two rolls and many tight turns. The pilot flew along the strip at about 300 Knots and then into a vertical roll. It was much better than my Mig29 flight although not as fast.
If any of you guys in the US ever get the chance to visit the collings display I fully recommend you do it.
One more thing to cross of my "Bucket List"

Tommy,
YOU DA MAN!

Got some stick time yesterday on a gorgeous R54 kit (PST 600 power) built by a friend of mine. What an airplane!

Setting up the two transmitters for buddy boxing took a bit of time to get right. Was too much gusty
crosswind to let me attempt a landing, but got three flights in. Got to make low passes down the runway,
clean and dirty. It's very impressive how stable and responsive this airplane is. She goes where you point
her, until you point it somewhere else. I'm really looking forward to getting my jet waiver on this airplane.

I hear Bruce is making up another batch of kits.

Mine is the yellow and blue R54 in the front. P70, Prolink struts (rides like a Caddy on the grass!). Dave (xxspeed) is the one on the right and Albert Santiago, an IMAC flyer, is on the left. Albert's R54 was bought from a gentlelman from Canada during the Rally of Giants at Farview RC Flyers in Hamburg, PA. That is where the above pics were taken.

My R54 was built and glassed by me and painted by Dan Davidson (Split S). It has an automotive quality finish on it. The airplane has over 140 flights on it as of yesterday!

Abert is an avid IMAC flyer but watched me fly my R54 over the past year and now he got bit be the turbine bug. He now has over 50 flights on his and he has only had it for about a month!

Unforutunatly it is raining here today so no flying. Oh well. Time to do some house chores.

Jim

What a wonderful flying field! Where did you hide the sage brush? :^)

Seriously, I'd love to attend your jet rally some year. Would be fun to take an RV out and visit.
Great photos!

Got some more stick time on my R54 a little over a week ago. Was gusty crosswinds again,
so I did not attempt the landing again. Chris Rankin gave me some buddy box dual. He surfed
the winds and made two nice landings.

Thank you,
Chris Shaker

Excellent group pic! Would love to fly there too, but PA is quite a drive!

Chris mentioned that I'm cutting a new batch of kits, which is true. Still waiting on some critical balsa to finish the entire batch, but should be able to ship some kits in early Aug. Will send out the "official" announcement to those on my notify-when-ready email list very soon. Let me know if you would like to be on the notification list, or keep an eye on the BTE website for news.

Just in case anyone is looking for a turn key, modified R54, here is a link to mine. I'll probably list it on RCU in a week after I finish up a work trip.

Well, the grey Reaction is no more.. I know you guys will give me a rash for waiting so long to get it in paint, but after flying two seasons in grey primer it was long over due, "Bruce won't know what to think".
Airplane is finished out in PPG Candies on Pearl White. High solids clear, the odd thing is it hasn't gained any appreciable weight. We are still trying to figure that one out.
Now if I can keep it from getting hanger rash, we will be in good shape. The pictures were taken before putting the engine back on, ground testing is complete and now ready to fly once again.
Hey Chris, thanks for letting me fly your ship, was a pleasure to help out. We need to go do it again.

See you West guys at Whidbey!

Hello Again R-54 Drivers. My R-54 has been flying for a little over a year now and has it's share of bumps and bruises. The most serious was when it tried to take out a runway light in Albany NY. Thanks to Bruce who sent me rib templates, all is repaired and we are back in the air.
I'm upgrading my gear struts and wheels (Robo struts on the mains with BVM Sabre wheels and brakes). The question I have regards the nose strut since I still have the wire strut installed. What trailing link strut do you that have converted, find fits best without interfering with the servo wire tray that sits above the nose wheel well? Robart has a new nose strut available but I think it will hit the wire tray due to the rear offset of the wheel.

John,

I used the small trailing link strut from Dreamworks and a BVM 2.25" wheel as a replacement for the stock nose strut. You just cut the original wire right above the coil and the trailing link unit screws on. You will have to make an adapter sleeve to accomodate the 3/16 to 5/32 (or is it 1/4 to 3/16 .. I don't recall) mismatch of the hole in the strut vs. the wire .. but that's pretty easy.

The wheel, when retracted, does come up higher into the fuse than the stock wheel does due to the offset of the trailing link mechanism, so you do have to be careful about the routing of the wires so they stay clear .. but it does fit and works fine. Looks cool too :-)

John,

Look at post #2406. That's my yellow and blue Reaction with the small Prolink strut in front with a 2.25" wheel, both from Todd at Dreamworks. I fly off of grass and now have 152 flights on my model.

BTW, I also have Prolinks on the mains. Requires a wing mod though. But it drives on the grass like a Cadilac!

It flew great, and sure looked nice. (Photos by Kim Waterhouse).
