I noticed that when I slowly back drive the servo without power applied, that there is a noticeable rough spot when crossing zero. The gears make a "grindy" sound through about 15 degrees or rotation.

When I power up the radio and receiver and operate the servo normally, it's quiet throughout the range of motion. Is that anything I should be concerned with? I put an SWB arm on which was a bit tight, but I only pushed while starting the arm onto the shaft/spline. The rest of the press was done by tightening the servo screw (no force exerted onto the bearings or geartrain). I don't remember if the "grindy" sound was there before I put on the SWB arm. Thanks.

I dont think there is any need to worry since the servo opperates normally and is quite when driven by the radio.

Marl,

It sound like the "MP" gear needs to be replaced. You welcome to send it in to us and we'll take care of it for you.

One of my 5625's does the exact same thing. I was worried enough to take a look at the gears and they looked fine to the eye. After 12 flights no problem.

Mr. Glavin,

What is your opinion? Thanks.

Just tried my servos again and now they are fine. Mine made the grinding when new but now, after 12 flights, they seem fine. I guess the metal gears just had some roughness to them, there is very little slop in the gears.

It's more likely than not, providing the servo is new, that the gear train has a few inconsistencies ground on to the gear(s) which will wear or break-in as the servo is used and result in normal gear noise and smoothness after very little use. This is not uncommon IMO.

Aside from your noted concerns, driving the servo back-wards without power really is not a good idea. BUT is common place. The gear train is designed to drive the output shaft from the gears starting at the MP output gear closest to the motor, then through several subsequent gears finally to the splined output shaft. You're pre-loading the entire gear train in reverse of the engineered design concept with gear ratios (driver/driven) and such.

I'd keep an eye on it and note if the problem persists. I always run my servos and other radio gear for a while prior to flight tests on the bench and in the model to verify their integrity (typically 15-30 minutes). If the noise was present after such time I would suggest a trip to Hitec's Service department for a free inspection.

Thank you. I will run the servo in on the bench to make sure everything's ok. Should be fine as it is a brand new servo.
