What do you guys think about the following Hitec servos for a 2 meter pattern plane? Would they be useful for aileron or elevator, rudder, etc.?? I can get a good deal on some. Both digital, the 5245's are mini's
5625MG 110 in/oz .17 sec @ 4.8V
5245MG 61 in/oz .15 sec @ 4.8V

Thanks, Steve

I have 3 hitec digital servos. Two of them are 5625's that are paired up working the elevators on my 1/4 scale cap. While I have not had any beef with these servos, They are not as smooth as coreless servos, and experienced pattern flyers would be able to tell the difference. I have had a few problems with the centering of hitec 605bb servos. I have to say that the quality of both futaba and JR seem better. Most recently, I have installed JR 8231, 8101, and 4721 servos in my widebody 60. the 8231's replaced hitec 605 servos that were on the ailerons. Right after the switch, I had to reduce the low rates by half because of the increased response, although the torque only went from 77 to 88 oz./in. also I no longer had those small trim changes that sport flyers are accustomed to.
In my opinion, the radio equipment has by far the greatest effect on flying quality on the plane itself. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, and that pattern planes only need 5-6 servos as opposed to gigantic scale aerobatic planes that need up to a dozen or more servos. for the cost of a pattern plane today, the extra $200 for the BEST servos is hard to argue against.

Brian,
Thanks for your input. Unfortunately my post sat unnoticed for a while, and I bought 5 of the 5625's for $150. I suppose I could always sell them. What Futaba coreless do you like? How is Grand Forks these days? I lived under the smiley face water tower on Demers and Washington for eight years, leaving in 1986.

Keep the 5625's, they are good servo's. Maybe not the best but for the money they are pretty damn good.

9001's are a good standard coreless, and the 9102 low profile is very very good for the money as an aileron servo. I'm going to put them in my smaragd after christmas. Only 3.6kg/cm on 6v though. But I don't think you'd need much more on a patternship aileron!

I forgot to mention that since the Hitec servos that I am using are on a Cap that is set up for 3D aerobatics, I have crazy amounts of control throws that would not be present on a pattern aircraft. A 2m ship would only have about 1/3 the control movement (plus a plane that weighs less) so I would think that any centering/trim issues would be resolved. enjoy your servos!

Since you left Grand Forks 11 before the flood and I came 2 years after, so the town is ok for us, but not for many others still here. The new hockey arena is really nice though.
