Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/11/2005 7:14:08 AM)

Ahhh terribly sorry guys. I got a generous helping of well needed rest behind my back now. Been gone for the last 4 weeks and sorry to admit it but the Katana is still not finished. I've been roaming around all over South Africa and things have just not been working out for the Katana lately but yesterday I got back at the office and construction will continue now. I have started covering and the base colours are basically on. Got alot more pictures to share but my pc at home decided that the USB ports needs a holiday now so it will be some time before I can have the motherboard replaced so I can get the pictures off the camera. Things are looking good for it though. Got a friend who is going to be cutting the text decals for me out of vinyl and I'm busy collaberating with him across emails to get that going. Got the basic color scheme worked out as well just missing one or two ideas on the fuselage. I'm not very creative as you can figure. The bones came out quite clean and I'm happy with it. Hope to get her in the air really soon.

matt flyer -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/11/2005 5:31:43 PM)

How do you stick the vinyl on it.

srg123cohen -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/12/2005 1:49:09 AM)

Are the tabs on the ribs put there by OMP or did you put them there? Also can you be more specific on what you are building on? Thanks

shanes300 -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/12/2005 3:13:49 AM)

srg123,

The tabs are put on by OMP.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/12/2005 9:39:26 AM)

Matt: The Vinyl I am reffering to has a sticky backing. Same stuff they use for signs and decals on cars etc. Basically it's sticker. Lovely stuff to do lettering etc with although fuel does seem to get to it with age.

Srg123cohen: What I build on would not be reccomended by anyone but it works nice and easy for me. It's a 2'' thick sheet of very high density polystyrene (Expanded foam) which is laying on a piece of glass to keep it straight. I work for a refrigeration company and we manufacture insulated panels as well so the sheets we get are perfectly clean cut. This stuff is very pin friendly although you have to pin down everything a little bit more to keep it in place. I've tried building on doors and all kinds of funky stuff but getting the pins in there is simply too much of a pain so from now on I use this stuff. Also Shanes300 is correct, you can see in the picture in Post #16 how the ribs come out of the laser cut sheet.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/13/2005 8:01:06 AM)

Alright got my puter at home fixed up so I managed to get a hold of the rest of the pics I got up untill now. I'm not going to blabber too much. Next pics show the cap strips, the servo rails and also some of the sheeting of the bottom of the wing. One note I would like to make is that the servo rails are a bit of a problem to install. The instructions do not specify whether they should be cut or just simply bent over the centre rib. At first I just bent them over but found that they would warp the trailing edge of the wing quite easily. So I attacked them again and split em in two halves. Nothing fancy [:)]

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/13/2005 8:05:45 AM)

Next was to unpin and flip over the wing so the rest of the sheeting could be done. Centre section, leading edge, trailing edge and cap strips.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/13/2005 8:09:32 AM)

The first pic shows what your floor should look like after you shaped the leading edge. It was quite fun and made a massive mess. But heck still great fun. Final sanding and installation of the hatches and making the holes for the aileron servos. The wing is done.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/13/2005 8:15:20 AM)

And then of course its time for the naughty pic and making engine noises while running around in the house. You know the usual drill. I am still busy with the covering as time has been a little limited but I should get back to it tonight and get it done. Final assembly should be a breeze as I have everything ligned up and ready to be installed. I still do not have a clue when I will have the decals and it's becoming a little bit of pain. Might have to make them myself but I'll see what happens.

Hi
Imanagged to build mine even with a faulty CD

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (1/25/2005 2:41:31 PM)

Progress pic! The letters are taking forever to cut out put I think the worst is done. She's picking up speed towards completion now real nice.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/2/2005 8:41:25 AM)

Wooohooo! The covering was a pain I'll admit that. But that's what I love about building. When you work real hard and then get to step back and actually see things coming together. The best bit for me still is when you switch on the plane for the first time and everything works. Love it.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/2/2005 8:48:25 AM)

And here's what I got around to doing last night. Glued the wing after spending an hour measuring and getting everything aligned. First I soaked the joint with thin CA to get it all in place and welded together. And then I went over the join again with epoxy to create a nice fillet and seal the joint off. I use some masking tape to mask off the wing and the fuselage a little so you don't get epoxy blobs all over. Simply drop a bead of epoxy all round and rip the masking tape off long before it dries...works well and is easy to do. After that I picked up some speed and glued on the stab and the rest just found their way on there in no time. Hinged all the surfaces etc. Oh and I had to cut a little round notch in the rudder to get the elevator to move freely. [:D]

AFSalmon -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/2/2005 1:08:38 PM)

Spacey, that's one impressive looking Kat kit. Did you spill oil on the leading edge?

Just kidding, very cool.

Thank you Mike. Appreciate the compliment. You know about the oil thing....Imagine if it could only have been so easy? Wow I think all my planes would have looked like that then [:)]
Oh and I wanted to ask have you had a chance to start on a new Hybrid yet?

AFSalmon -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/3/2005 12:51:36 PM)

I keep telling myself I'm going to build a new Hybrid this winter. Well guess what?........Winter is 3/4 over now! Man time flies and there just isn't enough to have all the fun one deserves. I'll have one for this spring for sure but it's probably not going to get started until after Toledo.

coverjockey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/3/2005 12:58:29 PM)

That's not just oil Mike , that's AMSOIL.

O it's all facts Mike. I always say I can build a plane in 3 weeks. Guess what I did the same with the Katana and I've been busy for nearly 2 months! But hey at least there is only about 3 hours of work left. I got all the servos in. Motor mounted and landing gear on. Still need to the tank and the pushrods so I might be able to get her in the air by Sunday afternoon if my friends don't chuck too much beer down my throat on Saturday night at our little club pool contest [8D] Mike I also get the idea you have something cooking for Toledo? LOL

Looking good man!! Dig the drips!

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/7/2005 6:52:07 AM)

Thank you Todd![8D]

Alright well bad news I suppose is that the new RX battery pack I got for the Katana Decided that it was never willing to live in a flying machine. I charged it up at home and when I got to the field she was flat dead. Charged her up monitoring and she was only taking 60 mah before showing full. Well as you can figure out it's about 2 minutes of servo working time then she's flat again. So the maiden flight had to be postponed to next weekend or well untill the LHS replace the pack for me. I already gave it to the owner so now it's just a matter of waiting for them to give me word. I was a little bummed as you can imagine. Had to wake up real early Sunday morning figthing a major hang over and slaved away at the finishing touches on the bird to get her done for the afternoons flying. [:@] [:o]

O well I did take some more pictures of the finished plane for you guys at least. Will get some in flight ones as soon as she hits the sky. Did you guys notice the sexy legs on these birds? [:D] [:D]

STLPilot -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/7/2005 3:08:19 PM)

Looks killer Spacey. Looks like we just found the new OMP Katana poster plane.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/8/2005 7:12:13 AM)

Does that mean she is virtually immortalised? [sm=devious.gif] [:D]

AFSalmon if you read this! Perhaps I can tweak the plane more this weak while it's waiting for the weekend's flying. How about CG on it? The instructions state that the CG given is conservative? Do you think I could be going wrong with moving it back 1/4" or maybe a little more? Also is anyone running any mixes on her? I have nothing programmed in now except a spoiler on my snap switch for elevators.

Oh and a footnote I forgot to mention is the plane came to 4.13lbs AUW. It's a little heavier than I thought I would get to but I think if my tower muffler comes the .46 should be fine.

matlok -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/8/2005 10:44:38 PM)

Spacey,

Nice job! That's a great scheme. Hope you enjoy your Kat as much as I've enjoyed mine!

CG-wise you should be fine 1/4" or more back, but of course I'd recommend trying the given CG first. It's pretty neutral as given (I still fly mine at that CG), so just start there and ease it back as you get used to the plane. Let us know where you end up and how it flies there! I'm not running any mixes as of now except spoilerons on a switch, and I really don't ever even use that. Also, at 4lbs 2oz you should be pleased w/the .46/Tower muffler.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/9/2005 7:56:23 AM)

Thank you very much for the compliment. [:D] Oh and thank you for you and Clay that worked so hard to get this bird out there. It was a really fun build. I'm also sure that it fly great, well at least I think it got it all straight [:D]

The tower muffler came today, see the problem is I am very high above sea level (I think it was about 4800 feet) and we do suffer a little because of that. But I think the .46 should do fine if I don't get out of shape too low. The CG on my Katana worked out very well as I can simply move the battery around to get it anywhere around the recommended. What you suggested sounds like a very good idea as I am a little scared of tail heavy landings still. So I think I'm going to start with the CG on the plans and shift battery from there. Thanks for the help! Appreciate it. I will try to get a video going this weekend. If the maiden is successfull though [8|] [:)]
