Razorback58 -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/9/2005 5:44:56 PM)

Hey Spacey, sweet looking bird! Do the OMP graphics come with the kit, or did you get those somewhere else? I have an OMP Yak kit and while I didn't dig too deep into the box I don't remember seeing any!

AFSalmon -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/9/2005 9:37:02 PM)

Razorback,

Nope, we don't include graphics with the kits. Sorry my friend. Maybe if I invest in my own graphics company I could afford that! I can recommend a couple guys we've worked with that have all the logos though including the Yak54 logos we used at Toledo.

It's all cut by hand out of black monokote and then put on with the windex method. Well something similar...I guess by me you can call it the Windolene method [:)]

Nice job Spacey!

shanes300 -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/11/2005 1:33:40 AM)

Spacey,
I am going to sound like a broken record, but man,,, that kat looks great...

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/11/2005 7:04:42 AM)

Hehehe thanks guys! I got the new battery for the guts so I am positive she'll take to the sky this weekend. I also took the time of taking a spare servo, reciever and bat out of other planes to make sure the maiden does not get fumbled again. I am confident I will be able to get some video going as well. I just need to find a willing camera man. Wish me luck!!

AFSalmon -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/11/2005 12:50:03 PM)

ok.......good luck! Little ole Forrest busting up our Kat this past fall due to engine failure at exactly the wrong altitude. You know the spot: not high enough to recover but not low enough to reduce damage on the plane. Just the right spot for the plane to tail slide, nose over and hit dead center on the runway! It's all fixible but the part I just hate is peeling off all that nice covering and having to redo that.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/14/2005 10:21:12 AM)

Hehe thanks Mike the goodluck was on my side this weekend! Sorry to hear about the mishap with yours. I hate patching covering as well, it just never looks the same as it used to.

Well the Kat flew! Finally! [:D] I think the pictures can speak very much for themselves at this point. If anyone needs a detailed flight report I take bank transfers and cash! LOL No just kidding I'll take some time to write one up soon. At the moment I just can't think of anything bad to say and too much good to say that the write up will be 6 pages long. I really enjoy the plane alot. Nothing comes to mind yet which I found bad. The tower muffler also made the world of difference with the power and she has more than adequite power as is. The video ideas were fumbled and I only have a small clip of the landing (Catch) but it's not much to look at. Just me grabbing my bird and walking away like I wasn't even there [8D] We got struck by rain right after the pictures were taken so video is on hold till next weekend or so.

More [:D]

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/14/2005 10:26:13 AM)

2 more!

AFSalmon -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/14/2005 1:03:35 PM)

Not only do you have a nice looking plane Spacey but looks like you have one awesome flying field as well. Tons of open airspace huh!

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/14/2005 1:27:26 PM)

It sure is a nice field Mike. Nice field with a GREAT bunch of people as well. This weekend our whole group has an action cricket team written in for a fund raiser. Most of us haven't touched a cricket bat before but heck we heard they have beer on sale there so it was a no brainer. [:D] We really live at the field. Every saturday and every sunday gets spent there by most of us from 11 in the morning till it's nearly bed time. This picture shows most of the rest of the field. Oh and most of my friends all having a beer as the sun goes down. You can see a pilot in the distance out on the main runway running 90 degrees to one my original flight pictures were taken on. That runway is really long with also huge open space out in front of it. I was on the short runway for the pics with the heli guys flying crosswind so I could 3D a bit. The heli guys don't mind me hovering on the deck at all [:)]

shanes300 -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/15/2005 3:32:22 AM)

Spacey,
She looks great in the air and looks like it handles well. Congratts....

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/15/2005 11:58:51 AM)

Yes to all of the above! She does indeed handle well, atually handles great! Very easy to do rolling harriers with. Upright harriers need to be locked in a bit when transitioning from low AOA to high AOA but inverted is smooth sailing all the way. Knife edge is really good with very little elevator coupling. I love the ease of transition from normal knife edge to high AOA knife edge. I think I could move my CG back a bit as the elevator response when upright was not quite awesome yet, but that could also be because I'm just used to my Yak. Hovering is as you can see easy. Very easy to move around as well. More than stable enough. Other things like flat spins weren't awesome but I think it's because of my CG. Waterfalls were already awesome. Knife edge spins the whole deal was done. I just couldn't get it flat upright but I will need more time at the sticks with the CG more back before I stand by that comment.

Kwak -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/17/2005 8:04:14 AM)

Spacey do you think the Katana would make a good second plane? And I hope you're going to let me fly it when I come back to South Africa?

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (2/18/2005 7:56:51 AM)

I would think it's a great second plane for anyone. Tone the rates down a tiny bit for the first couple of flights and keep the CG fairly forward till you get used to the way it handles. Only those two factors will make fly easier than alot of trainers I have flown before. But come have a go at it when you get back! The sticks are waiting!

STLPilot -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/7/2005 6:56:17 PM)

Spacey here is the video of your Katana you sent me, I got it setup for hosting. You can put that link anywhere you want. Great flying.

Thanks!

That was some top notch flying Spacey.......[:D]

Todd L. -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/8/2005 2:59:04 AM)

Looking good Spacey! [8D] I need summer to hurry up and get here!

JuzPlaneKrazy -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/8/2005 3:21:52 AM)

Holy Sh%t , I'm not worthy...[sm=tongue.gif]... Spacey, that Vid Rocked Dude. Killer flying [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

Spacey, Bro, I'm really not worthy...I just read through this whole thread. You can see when a guy is a clean builder, Tit's Job Bro.
The field looks great too, now I see what you mean about the lions hideing in the grass... Jump rite up and snag your "P" on a low slow harrier [:D]

Thank you very much Dion! I really appreciate all the help with the videos. My little hosting space I have is really not great for vids and well I don't know how long it will still be available.

shanes300, Todd L: Thank you! [:D]

JuzPlaneKrazy1: LOL! I'm not that clean a builder. More a slap together and wring it out person, but I try to get things to last at least 15 years more. So I pay alot of attention to fuel proofing and covering to ensure that the plane doesn't die from spooge or something stupid like that. Actually the field in the video is rather safe, although we do encourage people to not go there alone as there is some other even more dangerous elements involved there. But no lions, elephants or something funny like that. Maybe the odd mutated spider, snake or weird dangerous bug but that's about it. Oh and then of course king of the big five the mosquito is also present but here in Pretoria is not really malaria country so it's not too risky. [:)] I'm going to my home town in a couple of weeks to visit my parents a bit. Maybe I'll try and get a shot of the shocky with a wild beast in the background LOL

rc4me2 -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/30/2005 3:15:21 AM)

Spacey,

What is the latest on the CG question? I have finally managed to take mine out now that spring is here.

I flew three times today and it felt nose heavy. I'll be working it back, but if you could tell me where you are flying that would be a good data point for me.

Nice flying, BTW![sm=thumbup.gif]

JC

Todd L. -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/30/2005 3:29:34 AM)

I'll be interested to hear this one. My Kat in slighty nose heavy too with Saito .72 on it. I have flown mine a few times and know I could push the CG back at least 3/4 to a inch back.

Spacey -> RE: HEY! Lets build another Katana kit! (3/30/2005 6:53:15 AM)

rc4me: Thank you!

Well I have not had too much chance to log too many hours on the Katana as of late but I think the CG I got it moved to now is a safe one for me to fly at for a couple more months to come. I am happy with it at 130mm from the leading edge. That's 5.118 inches. I can go back but I haven't had the need to just yet. It's already landing basically harrier style 99% of the time. I would think another 1/4-1/2" back from there would probably be the sweet spot for the experts. I still can't get the upright spins flat but then I haven't changed my throws at all from the maiden so I could probably max out elevator and rudder and give that a shot. The Katana just does such a lovely inverted and rolling harrier that I don't get time for spins on a 6 oz tank [:D] [:D] [:D]
