Grayle,

Keep in mind that the Nobler is a VERY time-consuming build for a small sport-plane kit. It took me 3 months + time for covering. In comparison, I had the 4* ready to cover in about 2 weeks! I put a 46FX in my 4* and it was actually quite a fun plane to fly.

The Uproar is probably another good option (I never built or flew one), and there are many others. The idea is to get your hands on something that is cheap and easy to slap together, but is quick and has nimble flight characteristics.

With all the time it takes to build a Nobler I think it would be good insurance to first put something "in harm's way" that you have less vested in!

Walt

Well I now have five 10oz tanks of gas run through the new 46AX mounted on the Eagle 2. Now I can start to lean it out and get some more power. I'm thinking I going to order the uproar ARF from tower. I don't want to waste my short MN summer sitting in the basement trying to build another plane. I think it would be wise to get some training on low/midwing cheaper plane before trying to fly the nobler. Thanks, for a the good advice! Grayle

I now have over 20 flights on mine
at high speed it definitely Dutch rolls quite a bit
very little at slower speeds, that is why I had not noticed it before
the more I fly it the better I like it

Jean, what do you mean by "Dutch rolls"?

You are right mine has dutch roll also,, I think the vertical stab is too small and / the distance of the vertical stab from the center of mass is too short. So,,, dutch roll is very predominant. Jim

it dutch rolls much like the old quickflys
dutch rolls is like a dogs tail going around in a circle
it is seen mostly wen the plane is flying away from you
make a little circle about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch control is still very positive and flys like it is on rails with the coupled E- F it takes of in about 15 feet and lands like a butterfly
I have to make slightly longer landing gear and bend it forward a bit so it does not nose over on grass while taxiing will also improve prop ground clearance.
5 more flights friday and today on it

I did an internet search on dutch roll (had to use my engineering background to really understand it) but now it makes sense and I am caught up with you guys.

Its not something that I ever noticed on my Nobler, in fact many folks have commented on just how smooth it flys. I extended the rudder quite a while back which may be helping to prevent this, or maybe not. Next time I bring it out to the field I will watch for it.

One thing that I do know about my Nobler is that it gets thrown around by the wind more than any of my other planes. Even at high speed I have to watch it carefully to keep the wings level when there is a breeze up. But on a calm day it tracks perfectly.

Walt

Hi Guys!

Here comes a long distance reply from Sweden.. yeah... not Switzerland.. Sweden; where we have polar bears on the streets! I have just built my first I.C. r/c-kit and it is a Nobler. I an a beginer and started two years ago wit some electric planes. Then I bought a second hand Kyosho PT-17 stearman as my first methanol plane. When I was in the US this spring i bought a kit for the Nobler and a OS 52 4-stroker. It is lovely with these LCC (Low Cos Countries) ;-).

I have been reading of your experieces here and it has been a good help for me so first of all I want to thank you all!

Yesterday it was the maiden flight........and everything went out just fine!!! I have hard to judge the landing speed so it has been a bit difficult but Nobler is just lovely in the air! It acts exactly the way I wanted so I am really happy with this pkane! The 4 stroke was for the PT-17 and the OS46 FX in the PT-17 is now in the front of the Nobler. It works great!

I will soon send some photos!!

Fly Nice

Good to have another fellow Nobler owner. I still haven't flown mine. My OS46AX is broke in now and I just need to mount it to the plane. But, now I've turned my interests towards putting floats on my trainer. Should be fun!! Anyway, Welcome!! Grayle

Wow,
I just want to say thanx, to each of you on this posting. All the info has been very helpful and each plane looks beautiful!
I just found this thread tonight and read all of it!
I started building early April and just now am ready to cover the Nobler. The only thing left to construct are the wing tips.
Just wanted to say Thankyou for all the great information!

Bill

Nice looking plane. If you use flaps to land,, caution,, don't use more than about 1/2" total movement or 30 degrees. When you go pass that point they become speed brakes and don't add a lot to lift. You will not have enough speed or elevator to keep airborne if you exceed the 30 degree limit. happy flying.. Jim

Yet another beautiful Nobler!

I flew mine last week and watched for Dutch roll- I didn't see any at all, the plane tracks very true.

Grayle, have you decided on a go-between plane yet? After flying mine again for the first time in a couple of months, I really think it would be a good idea. I was reminded at just how quick and sensitive on the controls the Nobler is.

Landed mine after the first flight, and response from the spectators was "Wow that looked like fun!"

I think my go between plane is going to be a Sportsman Aviation Sport Stik 40 ARF. It's only $79.99 and it has a wing loading of 20oz/ft2! The only thing is it's on back order. Its sold through www.hobbypeople.net and I saw an ad for it in the most recent Model Aviation magazine.
