Status: offline I built our Z-P-51 with the 3 piece wing. The outer panels split at the rib out board of the gear so the center section whlie removable generally stays with the fuse. I attach the panels with a bolt thru one of the gun ports. I made my own "aluminum spar blades". they are about 18 in long. I also heavily reinforced the gear area and the main spar. Additionally I laid a twisted wrap of carbon fiber around the fuse and over the horizontal stab after seeing a plane lose the whole tail asembly in a high speed dive. I also have counter balances in all of the control surfaces.

Do you have pics of this procedure or plans or something like it? I am planning a project along the same scale but I have very limited space(375 sq. ft. Apt) A split wing would not only help out but also set apart from the rest on the field. Planning on a Z.P-51D with the Miss America color scheme. Hoping to start next month.

I have a few pictures but not in electronic format yet. I can't remember the rib number for the split but it is pretty obvious on the plans. I made two A/C ply 1/8 ones for each side. I built the wing over the plans as shown but just added these for the split and made sure I didn't glue them together. I glued one on solid on the inner or center section then floated the other to get a good joint before final gluing. I also used some bondo to close up the gap at finishing time. The alum blades are 1/8 x 1 alum from home stores. I usuall build Z planes with fully boxed spars so this one I just created a box for the alum blade. It's load carring on the outer panels but plenty strong. I ued 2 1/4in wood dowel pins for anti rotation front and rear at the joint. I used A/C ply for the 4 main spar doublers and added a carbon fiber strip top and bottom over the center joint. Also 6 oz glass cloth on the skin. Not much skin remains after the gear doors are cut out. I don't really like the single dowel at the center but I used one like the plans. It will wallow out untill it reaches a happy ?? medium. Our Corsair lasted 13 years before I sold it this way. The P-51 wing is pretty heavy but the gear mounts are not super strong as they are shown. We rough ours up a lot so I make them strong. The Corsair survived a contact with the edge of the paved runway that flattened the gear leg so hard I had to cut the bolts off witha dremel tool. Didn't tear it out of the wing however. The p-51 has a modified 5.8 that really makes some Hp and RPM so I had to beef things up a bit. Not much room for scale exhaust and the air flow is critical. We kept the weight down as much as possible by using the metal powder finsh. can't remeber the stuff. messy but nice.

big project good luck.

Sonny,

I haven't hinged these surfaces as of yet. I'm currently working with shaping the speed flaps. Also, I have a few pixs that I can share that will show the technique I'm using with Robart Pinned Hinges. I contoured the mating surfaces, convex on the moving surface and concave on the fixed portion. The flaps and ailerons will be done the same way.

Sky looking good man looking good I see you have the trim tabs in her are you going totaly scale with this bird
Also I am going to change the flap setup as I do not like the way it is built in the plans I have not figured it out yet let me see what you came up with for the flaps ??

Guys watch the CG. setting on the Ziroli P-51 had mine set at 8 1/4 inches at fuse side .Flew fine untill i retracted gear and went into fairly steep right bank . Airplane snapped and went into death dive from which there was no recovery . The 8 1/4 setting according to instructions are as far as you can go back on CG . But was to far back with gear up .Flew like it was on rails with gear down Mine was glass fuse 3-w 75 for power 32 pounds Would have been a real good plane if not for CG. setting
Good luck when test flying .

Arthur,

I dislike the way the flaps and ailerons are installed as well. I've been working on the flaps to get them straight and
true. I'm thinking I'll balsa block this trailing edge area from the bottom as this is not sheeted as of yet. I'll contour
the trailing edge to match the flaps and ailerons. Both will be contoured just like the rudder and elevator show above.
Let me know what you have come up with as well. ~ Wade

Hi wade I have a book put out by aero detail and it shows the flaps as a round leading edge into a groved trailing edge so I too will put a block and shape it to fit

I flew a Zeroli P-51 here for a guy and it was way off on the CG (nose heavy) and when i asked him about it he said he set it to the plans and we had to move alot of stuff around to get it right....and he had a DA-80 on it for power.

Hi wade here are some pics of the flaps it looks like an easy built just a round leading edge going into a mated concave trailing edge it should be a peice of cakethe hinge line should go in the center of the curve so you need to makre some custom hinges

I’m diffidently going to change the radius on the trailing edge from the plans perspective. According to those pictures it looks like a straight foreword fit…just the rudder and elevator assemblies I made. I’ll have some sanding to do…
