Matt,

You'll dig that Brison...it runs like a bat-out-of-hell. My flaps and ailerons were sanded on my flat bench. I laid three sheets of
100 grit sandpaper down overlapping the sheets by 1/4" and securing them with duck tape on the edges. The rest was just elbow
grease to get the thickness and shape to match. If I did this over again I'd make the flaps lending edge convex and the TE on the
wing concave. This is how the real bird was built. I did use a thin sheet of basswood on the TE of the main wing to give this area a clean
straight edge for the finish. I shaved the sheeting down and epoxied the basswood about 1/4" into the TE of the wing. I hope this helps ~ Wade

Is that reversed typo in your new post...or am I getting confused...your flaps are convex on the leading edge - rounded outward?

cause from your old post with the stab picures you say...

"I haven't hinged these surfaces as of yet. I'm currently working with shaping the speed flaps. Also, I have a few pixs that I can share that will show the technique I'm using with Robart Pinned Hinges. I contoured the mating surfaces, convex on the moving surface and concave on the fixed portion. The flaps and ailerons will be done the same way. "

Also, so you're saying with the sand paper you taped 3 pieces together to make it thicker so your could bend the paper round and still have some strength behind it. (Or are you saying you taped 3 peices together to get the full length of the flap/aileron?)

Does anyone make long rounded sand paper type hard dowels for both concave and convex?

What size and brand tank you running for the Brison?

Going to check into those real exhausts too.......are you a bigger fan of sierra over the robarts also?

I hope this little drawing helps in what I was saying. You are right on this: (Or are you saying you taped 3 pieces together to get the full length of the flap/aileron?) I had to tape three sheets end to end on my flat bench to act as a level surface to get the edges straight.

"are you a bigger fan of sierra over the robarts also?"I like the fact that the Sierra's are beautiful and stout unlike the Robarts.

Status: offline 		great thanks that helps a lot...ahhh.. so it's a mixture of the two on the wing with flaps and ailierons to be totally scale.

So the sanding idea helps keep the TE straight.....and you used that also to make the concave and convex curves by slowly turning the whole wing on it?

I was thinking that especially the concave requires quite a bit of sanding inwards on a 1/4" strip. On all...wing, stab and fin.

I believe the flap is hinged at the bottom and the radius part is attached to the top front part of the flap.

Yes - I used this stripping on the main wing only. I used triangle balsa on the tail and elevator
And toured to shape.

Status: offline 		Ok now I'm getting confused again... the hangar repair shots you just supplied are mixing me up too because the bottom sheeting is missing etc?

Here's some more shots I just found.....maybe the TE of wing at flap is concave, but the LE of flap has a fake arch on top giving it a convex look, but underneath it is also more concave??? Is the hinge at the bottom as you say? Seems that way on the hangar shots.

Status: offline 		I think you just answered your own question. Take a look at the first image on your post and note the numbers on flap position indicator. For the indicator to work that section must be attached to the flap. Note that the 10 degree mark is nearest to the flap sheeting. This section is only on the top of the flap as seen in the shop photos.

I’m not trying to be a smart as*, just confused by the drawing and the robart center mounted hinges shown in post 133. I have a lot of respect for people that take the time and effort to build kits and scratch build.

I’ve always understood that the P-51 flaps are hinged on the bottom.

Status: offline 		Had the same problem with my Ziroli p-51 which sadly I have now sold - took these photos of Twilight Tear at Duxford which she was having her flaps serviced which might be of help.
