Doug,

I'm anxious to see how it goes with those short pipes, both with noise and RPM's. I'll be watching for your updates.

Paul

Hey Paul,
Good to hear from you man.
That brings up the tach question. Think I should paint a white stripe on the spinner? Most tachs seem to be calibrated for 2 blades. Should I put 2 stripes on it?

Nice to see you're working on the A-10 again, too. I didn't think about stripes, but that's a good idea. I was going to get a tach that can read 4 blades, then take 80% of the reading for a 5-blade rpm.

Sounds like a lot of math to me. I figure I'll get some wide white pin striping and put 2 pieces 180 deg apart on the spinner. Hopefully that will work.
I'm finishing up the engine installation on the Pitts (which should fly this weekend) and it's back to sanding the A-10 wing.

just shy of three months on and off. soccer season with the kids is here so that takes first place over the girlfriend the jet. the whole rear section is now sheeted and mated with the fuselage. Has anyone seen plans for an F-18 similar to these plans?

Keep plugging Rick. Paul and I have been messing around with these forever is seems.
I've seen plans for an F-4 somewhere in the past. Can't say I've seen plans for a Hornet though.

Puck:

RCM Magazine plans service has a couple of DF Phantoms. The most scale like is the Pavel Bosak design.

Got to test the sound level on the fans today. The verdict is in and the winner is ME!
They ran 91db at 17000 rpm. This was measured at 25'. They're still not fully broken in so I didn't want to push it to 20000 rpm yet but I don't see 3000 rpm adding another 5 db.
Paul- this was with the short pipes we have.
Now, time to do "sand-a-wing".

Doug

Hmm, nice that you got 91db Doug. I will have to see what I get again. I have messed up the mixtures so I have to start again.

Goes without saying but just be sure they're not too lean.
Yeah, I was very suprised at the 91db after your 108 experience. The db meter was aimed directly at the side at 25' (club rules). The club elders signed off on it so I'm golden.
I took the A-10 to the club meeting last night and the old timers seem fairly impressed with it. I told them about you and Paul so we may get some more hits on these threads.

Wow, 25 feet away. Man, our club goes with AMA standard which is 9 feet, I think. Would 16 feet really make that much of a difference in db reading?? I do not think so but I know nothing about the db scale.

i used to do car stereo competitions and 16 feet in open air isnt going to make that much of a difference so i wouldnt worry guys. takes quite a lot of sound to cover the 7 db gap he would need to be on the bad side of this. ROCK ON!!!...oh by the way...Sox are kicking it tonight WOOO HOOO

Yeah Rock, I agree. The down side of it is that I can only get about 18500 out of the short pipe. Move a heck of a lot of air though.
GO SOX!
BTW Paul, I just got done watching The Wild beat up on my Blues. Thanks alot Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW, only 18,500?! What engines are you using. If it is the K&B's, they are not as strong as the OS46s. I am turning 22k+ with those same pipes with th OS's. Although, I would bet that 18.5k will fly it.

Sure hope so.
Now I'm having problems getting the Iron Bay pump to work. I may have to bit the bullet, tap the case, and use Perry pumps. I wanted to avoid drilling a hole in the case but it looks like I'll have to.

Gentlemen,
I pose a question to you all. i discovered in my amateur building skills that one of my rudder uprights is tipped in by a quarter inch. they are centered to each other by one does tip in. should i be worried or do we think i should be able to correct this problem with trim on the controls or should i break it back and fill it to be dead on?

Thanks,

Rick

Hey Rick,

My $.02---As long as the fins are straight to the line of flight, it should fly fine. Superficially, 1/4" will probably be noticable. I broke my stab/fin assembly out after it was completely glued in to fix it. So, if it were me, I would bust it off and make it right for esthetics sake.
Just my opinion, I'm sure others will differ.

Doug

Figured it was time for an update.
I rigged up a jig to insure the dowels for the aileron hinges line up properly.

I'm still fighting with one of the engines to get it to run right. I'm not a fan (pun intended) of the disc low end adjustment. I've been screwing around with this one for weeks and just can't get it to run. I picked up a Perry pump and pump carb for it and am working on getting this set up tuned in.

Nice to hear that we're still going on these things. thought i might be the only one left at this point...here's my updated pics. Paul you'll be happy to know that i now have the plans hanging in the basement as a shrine. haha

I'm taking a slightly different approach. I'm finishing the plane from the tail forward. Elevators are in and working and painted already. Uprights and tail are fiberglassed and waiting for smoothing as the i start on the engine nacelles. god give me the patience to finish that ordeal.

trab its a great project. i'm a first time builder of a plane this size and its been pretty easy so far.

Rick

Nice work Rick. Nice that you have a helper too.

I got the holes drilled for the dowel rods. I used a brad bit but it still ripped out the holes a little.
