Thought I would share this with one or two of you real R/C pilots. This was my first attempt. Harder than it looks this sport is. Needless to say it was repared and crashed many times further, but is still flying. I do get it home in one piece more often nowadays.

I don't see how... From the looks of that plane, I would say you get it home in one box! You do have a problem that I noticed from your pic. Your plane is made of the wrong materials. If you want to be a true 'crash arteest', you must only use the finest balsas and lite-plys. AND, most important... SPEED, SPEED, SPEED!!! If you don't have to dig your engine out of the ground, you did NOT have enough speed. You say, "Aaron, how do I know if I have crashed correctly and am using the proper material?"
That's easy, after you crash, measure the circumference of the debris field, AND the depth of the crater. Here are the correct formulas.

Debris field = wingspan x 2.5 (minimum)
Crater depth = engine length (minimum)

(A smoking crater is best)

Hope I've been helpful!
Later!!!

Aaron,

Give the guy a break will you

As he says in his title, it's his first attempt at crashing. Under the circumstances it's quite understandable that he has left several pieces still attached to each other!

With the right encouragement and sufficient practice I am sure that he will soon be totalling models with the best!

Uh... actually, yes, they do(fly). The problem is, they don't fly fast enough to crash good. I would say leave the gear in, and follow instructions above. That will turn heads, garunteed!

Nope those two don't count, wing halves still connected and/or attached to fuse are definitely not 'giving 110% crash effort'.

My cousin's friend's sister's boyfriend's uncle (who is the best RC Pilot in the world btw) had the best crash I ever didn't see. Flew his 200% Pitts through a briar patch which stripped every square inch of covering off the plane. He almost saved it, but then the radio glitched and it crashed into the top of a tree. It was still running, so he just throttled up and flew out of the tree, but the radio glitched again and he crashed in a stream. By the time he got there a rabid family of beavers has eaten the fuse, an eagle had used the spars and ribs for a nest, and magpie had flown off with the spinner.

And before anybody asks, yes he did rebuild it, but it took him two days instead of one.

Duke:

I DID see your cousin's friend's sister's boyfriend's uncle's crash, you only got a couple things wrong.

The second shot wasn't really a radio glitch, after flying through the tree, even with no remaining covering he could have landed safely, but the prop diameter had been reduced to the point he didn't have enough thrust to maintain his air speed.

The other one is the theft of the spars. There was indeed a golden eagle (not a bald eagle as some have asserted) looking for building materials, but she rejected them as already being too small. It was a peregrine falcon that took them.

Oh, one additional point. It wasn't really two days to fly it again. it was actually twenty five hours and seventeen minutes. Better you should say "Just a little more than a day."

Haw.

Bill.

The sad part, which neither of us has mentioned, is that his 200% sized model of a Lycoming TSIO-540 engine, which was set to develop 750hp, was damaged when the 14' propellor was shortened to nine feet going through the tree. None of us thought to magnaflux the crank shaft, which should always be done after a prop strike.

When we recovered the propellor after the take off of the repaired plane, we could see the shaft had broken just behind the propellor hub.

As he was doing a hot dogging take off, when the prop and spinner departed the airplane, HE VIOLATED RULE NINE!!!

None of us would ever have squealed on him, but somehow Dave Brown got the word, and before we could even push the plane (which was not heavily damaged, just the rudder servo gears) back to the pits DB rose out of the ground and REVOKED HIS AMA MEMBERSHIP!!!

Life just isn't fair, sometimes.

Bill.

This is how the debris should look. Ironically, I lost the successor DP Ultimate I got to replace this one Sunday. Locked out, no control........boom!. To many recognizable pieces to be a proper crash though.
