Guys,

I am in the process of setting up my servos for the rudder and elevator. Did you use the throw listed in the manual or something different.

Actually, the hard starting and loose cover was in 'Part 1' of two parts of this video. Anyway, I am using a 18x10 MAS and Powermaster 10% diluted with extra castor oil to about 8% nitro and 20% oil.

Guys,

I am in the process of installing my saito 5 cyl. How do you determine the center line of the fire wall. I have no line from areoworks as a guide.

Any help would be great.

Bob.

Bob:

I just finished covering my Aeroworks with Solartex and need to paint it. I got the ARC obviously. I have also installed the Saito 5 cyl radial. Here is how I did my engine mount.

First, make a full size copy of the firewall on cardboard. I uses postarboard because it is easy to use and cut. I drew mine using a school compass (which you will need anyhow). Next, draw a straight line across the circle. It DOES NOT have to be on the center - just make sure it is straight. Then take the compass point and place it at the point of the circle where the line intersects - both sides - and swing an arc ABOVE the line and OUTSIDE of the circle. Do an arc above and below (or right and left) of the line. Connect the points where the arcs intersect each other and that is one centerline. Now, do the same compass trick and bisect the just constructed centerline, connect the arc points have you have the other centerline. One is verticle, one is horizontal and simply label one of the for referenct. Next, draw a line 1/8 of an ince to the RIGHT of the vertical centerline (this will be to the LEFT when looking from the pilots position) and make sure you mark the template with something so you will know which way to mount it. Remember, the 1/8 offset goes to the RIGHT side when looking at the firewall from the front. This is to move the propshaft to the center of the firewall by compensating for the build in right thrust.

Now it is just a matter of measuring right/left from the 1/8 OFFSET veritcle line and up/down from the horizontal. I forget the exact measurements from the mount but do it in Milimeters (trust me) as the numbers work out even. Mark the holes on the template, mount the template to the firewall and drill the holes. On my I had to put a piece of ply into the hole at the bottom of the firewall on the right side in order to have enough wood for the mount bolts.

Take your time here. I probably spent 15 or so minutes insuring all was well and be careful to get the template setup correctly and on the firewall with the correct orientation.

Another tip. If you rotate the carb 90 degrees then you can run your throttle linkate under the fuel tank and connection will be easy.

Also, if you haven't been there then here is another one. The instructions say to mount the servo tray then install the fuel tank. If you mount the servo tray first you cannot install the tank. Install the tank first. I made two hardwood rails for my servo tray and mounted it with screws in case I have to remove the tank.

Good luck.

Dan

Ram-bro:

Black fuse, yellow wings with red bars, red/white rudder. Saw one done up in this scheme on a Stearman photo site somewhere (and can't remember where). Also, I think there is a similar one in a museum in Arizona. Not going for the usual military blue/yellow combo.

here are the pics of my recovered aeroworks PT-17. painted with rust-oleum aluminum and model masters paint on the stencils from "getstencils". I should have filled thewave a lil bit better as can be seen in some areas. Filling the weave also affects how good the stencils work....I had some problems with paint running underneath the stencil but not because it was adheriing well ut because the paint wicked underneath it.

I finally finished my Stearman so I thought I'd post some photos. I bought one that had been damaged in the rear of the fuselage. This Stearman was also the older version that had the chinacote on it so I stripped the plane of all the covering and repaired the fuselage. I filled the hole in the firewall, dropped the cockpit by one inch and put a Sullivan tailwheel in the rear.

I used the GP Stearman windshields and pilot figure and built a cowl ring of balsa. I took the stock gear and cut it down to just 3" of leg on each side and installed Robart struts on the factory gear. I then sheeted the struts and gear with balsa, sanded to shape and covered it. It has the Saito 325 Radial with a Mcdaniels glow driver, JR 821's and Spectrum receiver.

jbarnes- Your plane looks fantastic! Lot of nice work, and the Saito looks right at home. I might be tempted to just make a "static model" out of that one. Have you run the radial yet?
BTW, on your tip, I went ahead and bought the Aeroworks Stearman that was missing the wind screens---thanks. It's gonna be awhile before I can get into it as I'm working on a GP Stearman at the moment(I had already ordered it when I decided to spluge on the Aeroworks). I've also got to "budget up" for the engine for the Aeroworks. Honestly don't think anything but a radial will be right for it, and believe the Saito is the one.
Great looking plane--- and a nice job. Keep us posted on your progress with it.

Although the 5 cyl sounds great if I had to do it again I'd probably do the 3 cyl 400. I still had to add weight to the front to get the CG to come out close. Thats even after the heavy battery for the glow driver. I was worried the 400 might weight too much but now I think the 400 would have been been just right as far as the weight goes. Don't know if the 3 cyl sounds as good as the 5 cyl though. The weather in Colorado is major cold and snow this year. Probably be April before I get to test drive this bird!

The 5 cylinder looks way cooler anyway, and I'll bet after you get it all set up and trimmed it will be perfect. Did you have an option on the Keleo collector as to whether it was front or rear mounted?

Temple, I decided the rear exhaust was the way to go when you have that nice Saito. Why hide the cyl. on that radial! Thanks, Jerry.

Finally flew my Stearman with the XL-400-R ASP 5 cyl radial. Three exellent flights. Only 3 clicks of down elevator and it flew hands off. Half trottle for take off and most of the flight made it look very real. One quarter for slow fly by. 10 min. flight on 24 oz. tank with 4-6 oz left. Great giant loops, scale rolls and exellent stall turns. 20x10 prop =74-7500 rpm. Hard to tell in flight if all the cylinders a firing all the time even with the glow driver on. Plane weighs 20.5 lbs and has more than enough power is an understatement. Landings on grass with the stock gear no problem as long as you get it good and slow before touch down on mains. Two touch and goes were perfect with no bounce. You need rt, rudder on take off due to torque of this engine or it will take off in a gentle left turn. Just unloading it from the car draw a crowd. Flying it turns everyone present into a spectator and a good flight results in applause. No lead to balance it slightlty ahead of the leading edge of the lower wing. Sorry no pics maby next time, I had the camera but was too busy .

You just have to rub it in that you are flying your Stearman. We got snow up to the top wing. Haven't flown since the week after Thanksgiving. Good to hear you had abundant power with the 400. My 325 should be just fine. Love to see the pics. Thanks, Jerry.

You Florida guys just aint right....go ahead and rub it in. I guess we here in the midwest get to build more planes and have a better imagination and were better at flight simulators and we can fly using snow skis and and and.....I am sick of the snow and cold. Congrats on your flight. That is good news for those of us with the 400 and the stearman

Hello you fellow Stearman Nuts !

Question ? .....
I'm just starting to check/confirm the CG on my AeroWorks
Stearman and was wondering how many different ways are
you all checking your Bipes. The manual says the leading lower
wing is where the proper CG is ,but thats hard to do unless
there is another person there to help. (using just fingers and lifting)
So what is the hot setup ? Which makes it easy and more accurate ?
Thanks for any input !

Jim
