The hinges pulled out of the wood due to my inadequate gluing. although I thoughly soaked the hinge in glue, the part that pulled out was very pliable and soft without a hint of any glue being on the hinge.

Just ordered another one with a pitts muffler from tower. A guy at the field is interested in rebuilding the one I crashed and I have a few items I'm selling to get some money together. I've also got some robart hinge points coming to use instead of CA.

Sorry about your loss I am however very happy you opted to get anotherone! Also glad to hear the flight report. I was wondering about flat spins with it. I still only have my one maiden flight on it! Can't fly due to too much snow. Luckily though, I have my heli so I can keep the RC monster in me calm

The 12.25-3.75 is perfect for 3D on the 50SX I've run this combo on a 40 Ultra Stick, Magic, Twist and a Funstar. Tons of thrust and quick spool up too! These planes are all lighter that the CAP 580 though. The only thing I'd worry about is airspeed, or lack of it. I'm sure the plane will fly but, I don't know if it'll have enough speed to do the IMAC type stuff. You may want to try an 11-7 for the first flights and use throttle management to get used to the plane.

IMHO, the 50SX is absolutely THE best 2 stroke on the market based on the engines I have.... Absolutely trouble free and sooooo strong!

Cad, sorry to here about the hinges but, I'm glad you posted about it. I'm ready to hinge my CAP and actually had decided that doing all of that slot trimming wasn't worth it.... I'll be trimming this evening.

Oh yeah, my CAP is getting a Magnum 70 four stroke. I've got several of these engines and they're actually turning better RPM numbers that my OS FS70S2!!

Dave, glad I was able to save a plane

Guys, if you didn't trim the covering around the slots be sure to pin your CA hinges.

I have a 12.25 x 3.75 APC on an OS .50SX that is mounted on my Goldberg Edge 540 profile....and it works great!
I usually just flow Flexible CA in the hinge slots, and have never had any problems . I just stick a pin in the center, press them together, remove the pin to get the hinge line tight and bend them to let the CA flow in...I do both sides, on top and bottom.....Maybe I will seal the hinge gaps on this one!

BR289, that's the exact way I did my hinges. I even drilled a hold in the center to help wick the CA back into the hinges. However, since I didn't trim the covering back, the CA evidently didn't get back in the wood far enough to work properly. Sealing hinge lines is always a great thing to do.

Cad:

Please excuse me if this seems like a silly question, but did you use thin CA or medium?

Dang Cad Sorry to hear about the CAP .... Flew mine again today I am liking this plane! Kinda glad I used epoxy and pinned hinges...I almost had to with the Saito 100 on the nose I alos picked up a 12 oz round sullivan tank for it and with a little mod on the first former was able to get it in.

Glad to hear you ordered another one! It is such a good looking airplane and boy does it get the comments at the field!

I used Thin CA glue on the hinges. I've installed CA hinges 20x before without problems but this time I didn't trim the covering back a little to expose the wood and that's the only thing I can think that made it different.

Dave, how close to Nashville is Brownsville, TN? I do some flying down there some.

I'm about 150 mile from Nashville, only 50 miles from Memphis though... If you're in the neighborhood, yell at me and well get together! We can fly off asphault, concrete, short grass, not so short grass and this stuff that'll suck your plane down from 40 MPH to zero in about 10 feet!

I was flying off the 40 to zero stuuf today. Have you ever seen a Modeltech Magic? You know how tall the gear is and right up front? 3 nose overs today!!! It was fun! This place is a sod farm that a bunch of my electric buddies fly at. I tried to roll on takeoff but at full throttle, the stuff was sooooo thick it would just sit there with it's tail in the air! So, I hand launched it. It's so overpowered it'll just fly out of your hand... I love it!

I usually fly in Jackson, about 120 miles west of N-ville. (200 by 700 foot real short and smooth grass www.wtrcf.org ) I also fly at Halls which is near the Mississippi river. ( www.hrcf.biz ) It's an old WW2 B-17 training base and we're using 1 of the original runways and 2 taxiways there. It's real neat having an unlimited, essentially, length runway. Woo Hoo

This picture was taken of my SE5a just before touchdown today and yes, even with those tall, skinny wire wheels, it nosed over too...

Been to Jackson a few times for church stuff but it's about 4 hours away. If I head that way again, I'll be sure to drop you a line.

hey servo7... well it is pretty tight for smoke ... I just put smoke in a pac edge 60/100 running saito 100 with a TME pump and a Slimline pitts smoke muffler and it has been a bear trying to seperate everything to cut down on glitches in the radio. I was flying it today trying to get the smoke dialed in and started getting hits from the smoke pump battery/pump i was lucky to get it on the ground....ended up making a harrier landing ...wheeww! It was a hand full to say the least it was kicking in full down about 5 times in a row coming in on final.
Guess it depends on wether you use a pump or not if you will have room by the time you put a pump and oil tank and battery for the pump you have added a lot of weight and taken up space...but it would be cool wouldn't it

Smoke would be cool but I think you will make the wing loading too high and really ruin the good flight characteristics. Maybe those wingtip 1 time use canisters? I would like to try those. For showing off it's sometimes nice to put a length of streamer on each wingtip.

I have flown a number of flights with these... http://www.regin.com/rcsmoke.html

Works great and adds almost no weight. Save them for days with little wind and deep blue sky, they look amazing...

Well, I now have 25 flights on my cap and I have to say that it seems to have no bad tendencies at all. I had one our clubs most experienced flier try the plane yesterday an he really put it trough it's paces. His response at the end of the flight was ..."Wow, what a sweet flying plane! Rock solid, stable, very predictable, flies like it is on a rail with no tendency to stall off one tip or the other just strait ahead. Stall turns require an actual kick of the rudder or it will just tail slide." He was impressed with the motor, prop, plane combo that I was using. I changed from the 14X4W APC prop to a master airscrew 12X6 3 blade ( I will be ordering a graupner or APC 3 blade in a 12X6 if I can find them) The motor is a well broken in OS Ultimate 70 four stroke, idles like a sewing machine at 1800 RPM and with this prop selection at top end is taching 9800 RPM on the ground. With this prop and motor the plane flies scale and has plenty of vertical power, but I would not recommend it for hovering. The plane is a dream to fly and just have a ball with. My setup is a 2700 MAh NiHd battery as far forward as I can put it the receiver is behind the servos. I have 2 hi tech digital servos on the rudder and elevator and I am considering them for the ailerons as well. I don't have any additional weight in the plane and the CG is at 3 3/8 inches and it comes in at 6 lbs. 5 oz. What can I say 2 thumbs up to great planes on this bird.

Awsome report! I still only have one flight on mine With all the snow we have, and another foot by friday, I won't be flying my CAP anytime soon. I still have my heli until the runway clears though!

Glad to hear it's a keeper. I am still waiting to maiden mine, too much snow right now. I am also just finishing up an OMP 540 edge profile .46 size. I can hardly wait for the weather to turn, i am going to have a blast this spring!

how well does the cap hover, ie does it have normal cap bad sides such as snapping before you landing and back to hovering, will it do it? Thanks!!
