I got to fly mine today as we finally had a weather break. I also had to place the battery up front with the reciever. I have an O.S. 70 Ultimate in mine. Pulls vertical at a high rate flys mostly at half throttle. What a rock solid bird, I tried a high test approach the first flight and basicly got it to stall, it did not fall off one wing or the other just strait ahead. This plane is very predictable to fly and rock steady, what a joy. total weight on my bird is 6 lbs. 6oz. All I can say is.......SWEET!!

I also thought the wing loading looked high - my 58" kit built GP Cap is much lighter I think. Its the smaller wingspan and dual aileron servos that make the difference. My Cap has an OS 50 sx and lands like a dream. It slows to a walk in a medium breeze but doesn tip very easily at all.

Looks like I might get to fly it today. Is everyone using the recommended throws on the control surfaces. The elevator looks like it barely moves on the recommended rates compared to what it can move.

Mine need more elevator ....could be because of the 100 on it though.

I'm having a problem with the center line of the prop hub. It's not lined up in the center of the motor and I'm thinking about relocatin the engine down about 3/8" to get it centered up. I'd have to replace the blind nuts and probably add some light ply. should I do it or forget about it? Really don't like the spinner off center.

What engine are you using? Did you use the template for the motor mount holes in the manual? I really cant think of an engine that dosnt have the mount lugs on the crank center line. Does the cowling just not line up right for you? maybe the cowling is mounted a little cocked? Could you give picture of your problem?

Hey Dajensen, did you have to Cut into the side of your cowl for your OS 70 ulitimate? Isnt that the new, blue headed pumper?
It is suppose to be much shorter than teh 70 surpass II . I would like to have the ultimate but i dont want to cut my cowl

Sean,

I'm using a .61FX but I mounted the motor inverted instead of on it's side. I used the template and even turned it around to make it for inverted. Something's off. The cowl is perfectly positioned on the plane except for the nose. I'll probably fly with out a spinner and once the replacement cowls are available I'll probably pick up another one along with a pitts muffler and redo it. Just not that happy with it. I'll try to post some pics soon.

CAD:

Looking at the template on the Tower website, it seems to be symmetrical, so it wouldn't matter how you turned it. Did you center it over the lines on the firewall?

Yep, everything is centered over the lines. The left to right lines were just a little off (maybe 1/32" or less) but not enough to worry about. I figure it's from the distance between the center of the motor and the top of the mount vs the center of the motor and the top of the mount when inverted. Make any sense?

Does the OS 70 Surpass fit without cutting the cowl?? I am going to get this Cap 580 and fit OS 70 Surpass in it. There is a good price difference between the Surpass and the Ultimate. What about performance? Is there any difference between these two engines.

Airplaneman4,
I still had to cut the cowl but only a 1/4" x 1" slot to accomidate the leading edge of the valve cover. If the cowl had been just a 1/4" wider I would not have had to cut the opening at all. On the good side the valve cover is almost the same color as the blue on the cowl where I had to cut so it it is almost un noticeable.

Flyseven, there is a performance difference between the OS .70 Surpass II and the ultimate of about .1 HP also the ultimate is shorter by almost 1/2 " also it is a pumped motor so mounting position and flight attitude don't matter on fuel draw. it makes it easier to place fueling valve out of sight also. I use a robart ultra fueler that has 4 taps, carb, tank, pressure feed and tank vent. So it makes for an easy to fuel closed system.

Thanks Dajensen, would u happen to have a couple of pics of your ulitmate 70 mounted, and also a cutout of the cowl by chance?
That would be great to see. I am either going to get it or the 2 stroke o.s. .61fx with pitts. Thanks again

Airplane man, I did a review for RCU for this CAP. I used the OS .70 surpass. Read the review here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_guide/kitexpertreview.cfm?editorial_id=320&kit_id=3182

Nice review but I couldn't find the weight and wing loading. Did I miss them?

CAD:

With the Great Planes mount, the center of the crank should be at the center of the mount no matter which way you turn it. You seem to have done everything right.

I guess all you can do is measure how far it is off, then knock the blind nuts out, fill the holes with short pieces of dowel and redrill that much lower. I've had to do that on my last two Great Planes ARFs even with the engines mounted sideways. Don't know why.

Airplaneman4, I don't have any pics of it yet but I will snap some and post them. Also I just picked up a second CAP 580 and I will be mounting an Ultimate .70 inverted in that one, After some looking and figuring on the first one mounting it inverted should require no cutouts at all as the exaust can be routed out the air exit via a deflector and I use a remote glow so nothing shows at all. Or so that is the way my calculations say it should be.

I just got back from my maiden...can you say puckered? Anyway, my CG is a little aft of the starting point (after all - I like them agile) anyway, the low aileron is crazy and high is great. Rudder is very effective at either setting but the up elevator needed more on the high rates. It would spin but not flat spin till I dial in more elevator.

With a .61FX and 12x6 the plane was crazy fast. I flew a WM Super Chipmunk with a .91FX that wasn't that crazy. Anyway, I'll probably try a 13x4 to slow it down a little and give some more thrust for verticals. The plane has enough power to hover but not enough throws dialed in to really 3D fly. In fact, if you want a 3D plane, I would almost tell you to look elsewhere.

I've also solved my cowl situation... When I hit the throttle the plane climbs like crazy. It's almost as if I apply up elevator at the same time. I guess the mount has no down thrust built into my plane. A couple of washers under the top mount and the motor should center up better and fly better as well.

The biggest pucker came on the last flight. I was coming straight at me around 1/2 throttle (remember, that's fast) I pulled up elevator to go inverted and then fly away from me. The plane snapped at the top of the loop, pointed straight at the ground, and then straight at me... hit the throttle, jockied the sticks and saved if.

Overall, great flying plane but it is very CG sensitive. Once I get the right prop, down thrust, and the throws dialed in it will be a really sweet flier. It slowed down nice for landings but was still very twitchey on the ailerons. Gotta get use to the plane. I know, I should add some expo but I don't fly any of my planes with expo because I hate it. Just me.

Thanks guys!

Kevin

I don't know why yours is pulling up during throttle up, but mine didn't do that... You shouldn't need to shim it for down thrust...

scale, your right, I shouldn't need to shim it but I shouldn't need to move the motor down for the motor shaft to come out in the right spot either. I'll shim it and get another couple of flights on it soon enough. Looks really good flying through the air.

Scaleman, or anyone else, do you guys have any videos up yet of your Matt Chapman CAP's? I decided
to go with the O.S. .61 fx with pitts, side mounted to keep it more scale, not having to cut the cowl.
I would like to see a video of how it performs. Sounds like my setup is the same as yours Scaleman.
I do plan on installing a 12 oz tank though, possible a sullivan flex for longer
run times. The stock tank is too small...

I am going to try to get some video this weekend... I have to make a couple of changes to mine.... like you said that tiny tank don't cut it with the Saito 100 up front. I am also adding the elbow and a flex muffler so I don't have to cut the cowl .....flew it last week with the cowling off. But I should get some video this weekend.

Have any of you modified your tank, i mean replaced it with a larger one?
If so, what? What will fit? I am thinking a 12oz sullivan flex RST will do.....
Also, I am hoping my futaba 3004 servos on 6v will be plenty. I see no need
to spend top dollar on radio gear and motors for this type of "fun sport" plane.
Now if i were doing the larger Cap, i would go all out on digital servos, gasser, etc.
What do u guys think?
