OK, I really like gasser models. I want to build the smallest gasoline powered plane I can.

Question #1 What is the smallest gasoline engine made today? This has to be a viable powerplant.

Question #2 What airframe size for that engine?

I want a good power to wieght ratio too. Doesn't have to be balistic vertical but it does need to be good.

FWIW, I am presently flying a 28% With a DA 50 this is my level of experence.

Smallest one I found in current production is the FPE 1.3 (First Place Engines). I have one for sale here in the marketplace. I used to have a gas conversion kit that I used to convert a Super Tiger 90 to gas. Sold that years ago.

There may be smaller ones.

I'm intersted in this too. What is the smallest Gasoline engine, NOT by displacement, but rather in propshaft center to top of plug boot height? (Face it, that's the measurement that makes the most difference by far.)

Campagnucci cars makes a .40 gasoline/ignition engine for the car models. I suppose you could convert one to prop:

I read a while ago about a fella that flew a U-Can-Do 60 with a RCS 140. He had nothing but praise for the engine and plane. I have a RCS 180 but the smallest thing I have had it on was an Aeroworks profile.

Seeing that this was last entertained 5 years ago, what is the current answer? We have to have a smaller gas engine by now, right?

Ken,

Here is a pretty small gasser at 15cc.

Heh, I'm more concerned about propshaft clearance.

I recently picked up an Evolution G26 for a 1.20 Ultimate BiPlane, only to find that the carb interfers with propshaft clearance... in other words I would have to hack up the cowl to make things fit.

Cylinder height is less important to me as I don't mind a BIT of the head protruding through the cowl on a side mount, but I'd prefer not to have to hack a cowl apart to make an engine fit.

Sometimes I think that RC Airplane GAS engine manufacters don't give that much thought into producing engines ( except for maybe the RCVS engines ) that fit into our planes.

I guess Saito is now making smaller gasoline engines, including one that's coming out soon, the FG-14B. It's a .83 displacement motor! http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SAIEG14B#quickSpecs

The only thing that bites is the ignition is not self contained, and requires a seperate onboard battery pack.

FWIW; I personally have a GP 60 size Cub flying a BME .90 Supertigre gas engine It is a perfect combination. I believe I'm running a 14x6 prop . This little engine is fantastic. My friend also has one. We have flown them for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever.
I also have a First place 2.4, and have owned a First place 1.3 -both excelent engines. The secret to these small engines is to put them on the proper size plane.

The FPE 1.3 is nothing more than an Echo weedeater block that has had the timing changed etc and the case trimed down. Many folks over in the engine conversion forum are doing the same thing plus some!!

Thanks for the info.

I'll follow this Thread with great interest.

I will, at some point, build an 80" Widgeon. This model has round 8" cowlings. Gas could work if the engine spins a large enough prop.

I also have, on the drawing board as I speak, the Bamboo Bomber at 84". Gas could work for this model also.

I guess I like big cowlings.

Keep the info coming.

Charles
