masteromodels,

Please, tell me you haven't bought this plane yet. I have a horror story about a CJM Spitfire that I could write about for pages but I will keep it short. Very short. It was the worst kit I have ever owned. The fiberglass work was very good but the laser cut parts looked as if someone had cut them out with a blow torch freehand. I am NOT exaggerating! The instructions were a disaster with typos everywhere, an addendum sheet that made little or no sense and some things simply not covered. Do yourself a favor and shop for your P-51 elsewhere.

Want a hot tip? Go to rcscalebuilder.com and go to the Top Flite link. Steve Curry and John Cole have a post detailing the conversion of a Top Flite Giant Scale P-51 ARF to a B / C variant with a Malcolm hood. They also illustrate additional scale features that really make this bird look even better. The TF GS P-51 is already a winner and these guys make it truly outstanding. Take a peek, Bud.

Al

First, I would like to thank you for allowing me to comment on the CJM P-51.

Second, I fully back the quality of our kits. I regret that Al some 3 years ago experienced bad cut laser wood. The manufacturer we used back some 3 years ago is a leading kit manufacturer who now cuts 2 sheets of laser wood using dual cutting heads. If I remember, the same company stacked 2 plywood sheets on top of each other and turned up the laser to cut two sheets at a time. For all, we are coming out this a composite Spitfire later this year. I know of no other aircraft that is as graceful as the Spitfire is in flight.

Today’s laser wood cutting is very advanced so you can cut letters and numbers in a piece of 1/8” plywood. I am attaching a photo of the P-51 kit for you to see the quality of the kit contents and laser wood. We even show the optional engine cooling kit.

As far as the flying quality of out kit, I can tell you it is excellent. I have a video of it flying low and high speed below 5 feet and stable as a rock. When we had the CJM P-51 on the flying circuit, the plane weighed around 20-22 pounds and powered by a Moki 1.8. Put a similar engine on the firewall and have full. On numerous occasions I had “Top Gun” fliers take the controls at flying meets and all comment how stable and smooth the plane flew. I am attaching a photo of the plane for your viewing pleasure.

The fuselage is constructed using epoxy fiberglass and is now a one piece fuselage. Yes you still have to sheet the wing but it should be too hard. We do have a construction video that will assist you if you think you need assistance. The flaps roll down and the hinges are hidden. You can add optional metal gear doors and functional engine cooling kit if you desire.

You can see our P-51 at our website at www.centuryjet.com/webstore , contact me at sales@centuryjet.com, or continue to add your links to this forum.

Cheers,

Willey,
I'm currently building this CJM kit. I've been posting progress on my website under 'current' projects. Once I get to the finishing stage I'll post here on RCU. Right now it's just construction, etc. As far as how 'scale' the kit is...well the jury is still out on that. I'm not building it for any sort of competition, just to build and fly. Having said that there are a few changes I've made, and they include the stab and wing tip profiles.
Do you have this kit?
I purchased my kit from another modeller, and not direct from the factory. For the most part Bruce has been helpful in answering any questions, and has even called me a couple time to just answer them over the phone rather than typing out an email. I picked up the construction video, and while it certainly could be better, it does show you steps for the wing with regards to the order of operation.

I built the CJM p51 about ten years ago and am still flying this plane. power st. 3250 / 20 /10 prop, cjm retracts, jr radio and servos. If and when i had any questions , got good cust. support from them. as far as the scale outline only the pros. know that one. the plane flys like any other 51. use plenty of rudder on takeoff and flaps at about 30 degrees on landing.

I also have a CJ P-51, but it was from the older kit line (when the fuse was in two pieces), so I really can't comment on the kits "build-ability". I believe it's pretty scale... similar to Dave Platts' kit. In fact, I had the tail from an old Platt kit (remains from a long ago... accident) and put it on the CJ P-51 ('cuz it was already built and ready to go) and it fit like it was meant to be there.
As for flight, flies fine on a ST2500. Speed looks good and I really like how it lands. CJ retracts (big 5/8" ones) have been fine as well. Only possible issue I have is the tail sits quite low (on mine) and the rudder will sometimes drag on uneven ground. I may have made a boo-boo in building...

I have some pictures of it in the air here and a video of the third flight here (right click and save as). On the video I don't have the cowl on, and the ST is running quite rich (still in the break-in phase), but it's not bad. You'll notice that mine is nose heavy (watch the T.O. roll). E-mail me if you wish with specific questions.

Well, I'm at that finishing stage and expediting to get a bulk of it wrapped up before our baby arrives (next week).

Here are some pics, first 2 showing the model in it's primered state. Then 2 showing it covered with Flite Metal in it's raw state. Then 2 more of the flight metal sanded and riveted, etc. Last 3 pics show some color starting to go on.

I believe that the basic airframe of this Mustang was designed here in Australia by the late John Miles. I think he based this model very much on the David Platt P51. It is identical in Size for a start. The moulds etc. were bought by CJ .

Peter Oz on this forum has a nice version of the original Miles P51 and he might be able to shed more light on it's origins.

As for "Scaleness " ( is that a word ?) ,if it is the same as the Platt, then it has just a few minor issues. I built the Platt kit a few years ago and in the process compared with overlays etc.the Platt plan with others but mostly the B.Taylor plan . The differences I noted were minor with the Taylor plan being most like the many 3 views I studied. I have had a good look at the photos above of Smchale's great model and , without measuring ,it appears the same as the Platt. This means that it is too deep in the fuse under the Tailplane seat ( about 1" has an airfoil that is not quite " full enough" in the 1/2 cord region, and the lower cowl is slightly to deep in the chin area (.Less than 1/2" )As well, the P51 has a slight "arch"downward where the fin meets the fuse that seems absent from this model. The angle of the fin is slightly too shallow too.

However, having said all of that, I still think that this model is above average in the looks department and ,IMO is much better than either the Topflight or Pica kits. Hope this helps.

Cheers, Merlin Man.

Thanks for the kudos guys. I''ll post some pics when it''s complete....but that may be a ways away yet. With regards to scale outline...here is the wing tip problem I found on the plan. I''m holding my tip template I made for comparison purposes.
