I'm about to begin builiding my Hangar - 9 P-40. I plan to install a set of C.J.M. retracts for it. A firend of mine told me that in order for the retracts to work properly (ours is a grass field) the retracts must be installed at a 110 degree foward or the plane will tip-toe on take off. After inspecting the modifications needed for the C.J.M. retracts it's impossible to tilt foward the landing gear beyond 90 degrees. I checked the retacts that come with the model and they are at 90 degrees which means that this plane will not take off from our grass field. Any comments on this issue will be appreciated. I'm not going to start building until I resolve this issue, it's sad to crash-land such a nice airplane on take off because of this potential problem with it.

Go back to page 13 and and check out the post that gives a link to a guy on RC Groups. This guy did a great review. I followed his lead and added NO nose weight, plus did not have to cut the cowl all to hell. Move the CG back 1/4 inch from recommened and she'll fly off grass with no problem. Mine does.
    Hope this helps. John

    John:

Thanks for your propmpt response. I will move the C.G. back as you recommend. I already installed one of my C.J.M. retracts on the left wing , now I'll go with te right wing panel. This will be the only major modification to this plane so I hope everything else will be straight foward. I'll try to post some pictures.

Yep-It's pretty straight forward. Nothing out of the ordinary. If you follow that review on RC Groups you'll have a great flying plane. And a good looking cowl, too. Here's a pic of mine about to touch down. This is my home field, with astro turf, but I have flown it a few times off grass. Post pics when ya can.

Will a Saito 1.25 fit in this plane? Should be able to swing a larger 3-bladed prop for thrust (and scale looks) but also will still slow down well when landing.

Yes, it will fit. I had a Saito 150 in mine until I recently wrecked the plane in a collision with a telephone wire. The engine is fine but I'm getting a new plane and will be going with a Saito 100 and the Keleo "scale" exhaust this time.

I forgot to mention, I was using the stock exhaust with the Saito 150. Because the exhaust exits from the back of the head at an angle, I had to make a small notch in the bottom of the firewall in order for it to fit more snugly. Otherwise, the spinner/prop would have been too far forward. Also, I used a remote glow plug to make it easier to reach.

One more thing, it balanced perfectly with servos etc in their stock locations but I had to zip-tie the battery to the former right behind the servo tray.
