I have a RCV120SP and a 90 SP. I have been breaking in the 120 and the muffler continues to come loose. I tightened the pipe when the engine was just shut down and it has not reloosened. The muffler comes loose on every engine run. I have tightened it until on the verge of striping the threads, or so I think. What can be done about this? Also, what size is the exhaust pipe thread? I want to use an OS flexible exhaust for a scale application.

Thanks

I Mark

I am sorry to hear of the problems you have been having.

This does sometimes happen when running the engine in, and it is likely that the muffler threads are becoming stripped now. Assuming your engine is under warranty we will be happy to replace your muffler. Please email laurenne@rcvengines.com with your engine serial number (and warranty details if you have not already registered your engine).

We do recommend that the new exhaust should be tightened as per the instructions (ie. when the engine is already hot). It is also beneficial to add some loctite to the threads prior to tightening. Finally your engine should be run in on a solid test stand to reduce the vibration which occurs during running in.

Finally the exhaust thread is M11x0.75 which I believe is the same as the OS91FS exhaust thread size. Many of our customers use an OS flexible exhaust to improve the scale look.

I hope this helps and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Laurenne

I am trying to find an electric starter to which the starter adaptor for the RCV 120 SP may be fitted. Is anyone able to tell me which starter available in the USA will take the starter adaptor for the RCV?
Thanks for any information you are able to provide.
Ken

Marko78z,

You can use most any starter for the starter adaptor however you need a HI-Tork Startker. I use the Sullivan Hi-Tork Starter. It works great. I tried one of the Hanger 9 PowerPro starter but it did not have enough tork to crank the engine.

Magnum Starter <= I use one of these to start my 90SP engine with the RCV starting wand and it turns the engine over quite easily, and fits nicely in the palm of the hand too. Should be good for a 120SP also.

You remove the starting cone from the starter and then put the RCV wand on instead, tightening the set screws down tight onto the starter shaft. In this case though, the wand's set screws are going to crush the shaft's threads so it'll probably never work for the original cone again... I dunno. I bought one of these starters and dedicated it to the RCV starting wand, and use a different starter with a cone for my heli's push-in wand and OS 2-cycle engine airplanes.

Regards!

ps. There is also a company making ring exhaust systems for the RCV engines that go around the engine and have the exhaust exit tubes directed directly down (2 exhaust exit tubes). It's expensive but sure looks good for scale applications where you want to hide everything you can inside the cowling! PM me if you want the link to it (I'm not affiliated in any way with anybody though... I'm just a normal model aircraft modeller who happens to really like the RCV engines now).

- Michael

I got tired of the loosening during each run also so I did the following. I got a piece of steel pipe with an opening large enough to be tapped M11x.75. I then had a friend turn the outside of the pipe down throughout its entire length to take some weight off. (I had him leave a little extra on each end for thread tapping and welding later.) I then tapped this pipe to fit the exhaust header. For the exit end of this new "muffler" I selected a pipe of inside diameter equal to the exit of the RCV muffler and and had my friend turn it down to fit inside the large diameter pipe. I welded it into the large pipe, tapped the new muffler for 2 nipples, one in front for the tank and one in back for the crankcase vent. While the expansion chamber is not as large as the standard muffler, I have tested the new muffler on the bench and it works fine. No loss of power and good fuel flow. It's also easier to fit inside of my Corsair cowl. By the way, the muffler body pipe needs an inside diameter of around 10mm to allow for tapping.

I think the difference in the expansion rates of the steel header and the aluminum muffler is the root of the loosening problem. The new steel muffler will expand at the same rate as the header pipe and should not loosen as easily.

I have around 15 flights on my RCV 120 and am on my third muffler from it loosening and eventually stripping the threads. I followed the directions on tightening after its hot, that seems to help but the vibration of the motor seems to eventually overcome the muffler.

If the muffler stays tight the pressure fitting comes loose. I then retap the threads to a bigger size pressure fitting which gets me another few flights. The motor seems very sensitive to muffler pressure so when the muffler or fitting falls off it dies.

The other vibration related issue this engine has is the carb barrel wears the screw nub that holds it in and the barrel ejects from the carb. This has happened twice now in my fifteen flights with it.

Between buying mufflers, carb screws, and the related dead sticks I am VERY MUCH REGRETTING buying this engine.
