Hi Guys,
I decided to give aerofly a try to practice some 3d at home with my 9cap.
It's been 4 years since I assembled my pc and have no clue about what
video card to get.

I've got a PIII coppermine 800 mhz on a microstar815Epro board.
512 MB ram (133 mhz frontside bus) running w2kpro ( iknow, it's a memory pig).
On the agp4 is a hercules 3d prophet II mx (nvidia 32MB).
plays allright max payne, quake etc...
But this card is on the list as not compatible with afpd.
I have a $150 bestbuy certificate and would like to know if
they have anything decent i can get for afpd.
thanks, pat

Isn't the ATI Radeon 9800 like $249 or something like that, I see an ATI Radeon 9200 128MB for $99 but I don't know how good it performs.

Yes that is the one i'm talking about. But I don't know how good it performs with AFP or AFPD because I have never used that one. Also don't get All In Wonders series because they don't work right with aeroflypro for some reason.

Acording to the Aerofly Professional Delux minimal requirements you need a 128mb of ram and you have 512mb, and you need a 64mb graphics card and the ATI Radeon 9200 is 128, it also shows that it requires ATI 9xxx series which that fits in because it is an ATI 9200 graphics card. Go here and take a look because you might find even a better one because I don't know anything about geforce and I have seen a $99 graphics cards at bestbuy.http://www.aerofly.com/requirements.html but you might be set with the ATI Radeon 9200.

hope that helps,
Wes

To help people find a good video card at a good price I suggest taking a look at http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-14.html (last page of latest card review, with links to previous reviews) It gives some good examples of performance differences between the different cards. For AFP and AFP deluxe I suggest comparing OpenGL performance. http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041110/index.html also has good information in it.

And to find pricing information for mail ordering, try http://www.pricewatch.com

If you have a pentiun 4 with open PCI slots only....I got a Visiontek 9200 128 PCI with open GL. It seems to work good for me. At first with the on-board graphics....it was so slow it was not even worth running. There may be better card. C. city had the one I got. I wis more people would place more data here. Good luck...Happy New Year!!! 2005 PS about 79 frog skins $

I wouldn't put a graphics card in a pci slot.
the agp has much more bandwidth and is designed for that.
I was reading at tom's for a while and it looks like the
RADEON 9600PRO 256MB DDR AGP8X is a good card
if you're on a budget ($148).
http://www.atacom.com/program/print_html_new.cgi?cart_id=2586975_4_234_33_112&Pagecode=SEARCH_ALL&Item_code=VIDA_ATIX_96_PQ&USER_ID=www

if anyone has it, please tell us about it.
I think bestbuy is overpriced in that department.

happy new year

Miami ....If your mother board does not have a AGP....what do you do? It cost to much to replace mother board. SO why do you say you would not use PCI slot? Keep reading on Toms...PCI may be the wave of the future. They are neck and neck right now (they say)

If you are going to Best Buy and want to stay relatively close to $150, try the BFG Tech Nvidia FX 5700 or 5800 OC, the 6800 would be even better but its $300. I have the FX5500 256DDR and it is fine ($150), I can run AFPD pretty bumpless with everything on but smoke. Im getting about 50 frames per second and it looks smooth as silk to me with shadows and reflections on. I have a little trouble with smoke though. It will drag the frame rate down if you crank the smoke up.

I have 1GHz AMD Athlon processor and only 359(?)MB ram.

Folks, PCI is basically dead. ATI, out of the goodness of thier heart, still manufactures some of their video cards in PCI. However, AGP 2X is faster than PCI.

If you mean PCI-Express, that's a whole other kettle of fish - that IS the way of the future. Almost NOTHING in common with PCI, except for the name. It's a serial and not a parallel protocol.

In looking for a video card for your machine, you must take into consideration the speed of your AGP port. I had a PIII system with a AGP 4X slot. I too am a Tom'shardware fan, but putting a 9600 or a 9800 into an AGP 4X slot basically gets you less than 1/2 of the performance you see in Tom'sHardware benchmarks.

I ended up getting a new motherboard, P4 2.66GHz proc, 1025MB Ram. It had a AGP 8X slot, and I'm getting 90% of the benchmark on Tom's hardware. I ended up purchasing the 9800 PRO for $249. The tests I ran on the 9600XT were just too disappointing.
