Question, what is most important for speed?
Fuselage?
Wing?
Thumbs?
Please vote for only one.

Well Randy, I would have to say thumbs... I could have the fasted plane around and you guys could be flying Dodgers and still kick my butt.... That is provided you don't cut out

A fast plane doesn't do you any good unless you can get it around the poles....

My vote is wing, straight, smooth, none bending, sharp trailing edges, correct tips, correct airfoil.

WING is the most important for SPEED. My estimation is that fuselage account for about 20% of the overall speed with wing around 75% and tail about 5%. That's just my theory based on surface areas.

Thumbs what makes you win races even though you may not have the fastest (speed) plane on the course.

I know the exact numbers for drag??? For Bulky quickee fuse from Dr. Hepperle

Level Flight In TURNS
Drag: Drag:

Wing 27% Wing Profile Drag 16%
Wing INduced Drag 60%
Fuse 70%
Tail 3% Fuse 23%
Tail 1%

Do you see why having a bigger tail, like the NEME-Q has advantages? Helps stability and at 1-3% of the total drag, who cares....

JZW,

Do have the link to Hepperle's Q500 drag break down? I've been all over his site and can't find it. I'm interested to see how he figured those numbers out...

Why yes I do AJ..... My post did not come out the way I had it.... I had it divided into level flight and in the turns...

The induced drag on the wing goes way up so that the wing is the most drag in the turns, the fuse is the most drag in the straights...

Its under "How it all works together"............

You going to do any mile-high racing this year? If not what about the nats???

Got it, thanks! Must have skimmed over it and missed it 5 times, duh… Now I get it, I was wondering about that 200% total you had going on there.

I’ll be at the NATS, with bells on. Not sure about the rest of the year.

Hey Norman, you looked a little too serious in all the pics of you in Florida??? Were you bummed or is that your actual disposition?
I think you should smile every once in a while, otherwise we may confuse you for Freeman Jr.........................

Funny you should mention that John... When I was first started racing (last year) I was looking at all these pics on the NCPL website and in everyone Dave looks the same way.. I thought, man, what a crab ass this guy must be... Turns out that he's not that way at all but likes to pretend he is everytime there's a camera around.. It must be an image thing

Ha,

I blame it on the Marine Corps, you wouldn't believe the ribbing you would have taken if you were ever smiling in a picture. Plus, after all weekend in close to 90 degree HUMID weather, I was plane worn out. Plus, maybe a couple too many coldies at Uncle Al's (best ribs and wings I've had in a long time).

Heres the picture in question, I'll work on the smile, I wouldn't want to be confused with Gary Jr. (who unfortunately lost a plane early in a midair)
