Yes fellow modellers,
The r/c gods have at last smiled on me!!!!
At a garage sale, I stumbled across a n.i.b. Great Planes Rockwell
Aerocommander Shrike, just like the one Bob Hoover used to fly.
I have always wanted this plane, and now after many, many years, I have it. I will put it together as a winter project. For
power, thinking of 2 Saito`s, either .56, or .72`s Or, 2 T.T .46 pros. Any body have first hand knowledge of the Shrike, building tips, or thoughts on the retracts?
Thanks gang,
Kerry

I am very jealous. I have been looking for one of these (nib) for a long time. Good luck with the project.

I used to know somebody that flew one of these some time ago, it was a fast, smooth flier, had a high landing speed due to the tendency to want to tip stall, it looked great in the air. I think it had a pair of O.S. 45 FSR's in it. He had some problems with the retract mount in the nacelle, he tore the same one out twice. The kit builds into a nice looking airplane. The mentioned plane finally met it's demise in an engine out situation, he should of cut off the other engine and dead sticked it in, instead, the wing stalled violently while trying to nurse it in on one engine.

This kit has a poor reputation due to the tip stalling problem. I have one that I picked up as a project - that is, it is semi-built, I guess you could say. More like I rescued it...

Here's the deal: The full scale airplane has 6.5 degrees of washout. This model was designed with no washout. The tip stalls on the model are not a surprise.

I will be having new foam cores cut for mine with washout, to reduce or eliminate the tip stalling. I highly suggest that since you have yet to build yours, you should get new cores made with washout as well. Flyingfoam.com is just one place on the web that custom cuts foam cores.

Also, this is a relatively small plane with low wing area to haul around motors much bigger than a .40. IT's going to be low drag, so I'm sure a couple of .40s would be plenty, and .46's would be a blast. The .72's would probably be too heavy.

PS, If you want to go in on foam cores, we might be able to get a break on 2 sets vs one. I won't be back online for 2 weeks though, so be patient if you try to contact me.

I also have the Bridi Aero Commander kit. I would be interested in going in for some re-cut wing cores with you if it lowers the price.

I also will be gone for 2 weeks starting 5 Sept so if you email me, that's why I don't answer. I'll be back on-line on the 23rd.

Later
Don

kerry fxd again. thoughts. my plans state that washout is built into the wing . sure looks like it. joe bride as so designed a another wing for it so it would fly slower.have not contacted him but will soon. as for retracts only goldberg retract nose gear is recomended. my instructions show 90 deg. rotation rom-air mains.please email me. would like to compare notes while building. like to her from you jwebster86@aol.com

FXD,

I can't find any mention of washout on my plans. I do have an original Bridi kit not the Great Planes kit. Perhaps they did re-do the wing when GP bought the rights.

Can you tell me where you find a reference of washout on your plans/instructions? Just curious, maybe I'm more blind than I thought.

I plan to use Robart 90 degree air retracts with a Robart mechanical in the front. Also I am doing away with all the bellcranks and torque rods and just sticking servos where needed.

Enya .45 engines for power.

When either of us start construction, maybe we should start a construction thread and share ideas.

don i think you idea for a construction thread is great. as for your question the booklet of instructions under preparing the wing cores (1) to double check your marks, wash out is built into the wing core. when a wing core lays right side up on your work bench, the trailing edege near the wing tip will be "up" a bit in relation to the rest of the t.e. hope this helps. keep in touch fxd. you can email me at jwebster86@aol.com

Yep, there it is, right there in the instructions. Apparently there is wash-out in the wings of my kit. Thanks!

I should be starting my Shrike Commander about December or so. I have a Fusco Long-eze that is next in line. If anybody starts theirs before that time, I hope a construction thread does start.

Well fellas, I think a thread would be a great idea!
Also, I would be interested in also getting a set of cores that have washout in them. I will check my kit to see if they (Gret Planes) mention the washout to be built in. As for engines, I`m
leaning towards the T.T 46pro, or the GMS .47. Have used both,
and won`t hesitate to use them.

fxd again, i talked to joe birdi last nite. what a nice guy. he did indeed design a new wing for the aero commander. what he did was make the wing 2 inches wider at the tips. this will decreace the taper in the wing. witch will make it easyer to fly. he said if i would send him a template of the center rib he would make me a drawing for the tip. then icould make a templates for center and outer rib. i will do this as i am a machinest. then i will talk to foam cutters any ideas would be helpful. thanks

Cool! I would guess I have the "old" wing set because if he increased the chord 2" out there it was a tri-angle before the change.

See? Thank G-d for the internet! I'll look into getting new cores made when I get back from vacation.

Going to the Reno Air Races! WooHoo!

See Ya!
