And from the ashes the the demon shall rise again... ...

This is my second SPAD attempt. I it is much better then the first but I already have plans to improve the third. This one was built in less the ten hours and a twelve pack.
I surface mounted the servos like some of the pictures I have seen around the forum. Works much better then trying to mount them inside. Thinking about adding another vert stab.

Tried to go out today and get'r in the air but the engine just would not fire at -10.

Maybe tomorrow.

NIce but it looks uncontrollable. I'm brand spanking new to building SPADs can you elaborate on what happened to the first one you built?

Heres a pic of my first SPADs progress. I cheated a little .well look at the picks and see if you can see how .

My first one basically was a bad set-up. The elevator had like two inches of travel, as did the ailerons.
(way too much)

whenever I touched it up in darted up, likewise down. When I touch the ailerons it rolled very quick. I just wasn't ready for it. I had the plane comming back to me when it rolled and took a nose dive. (ice like hitting concrete!)

I only have about an inch total in the ailerons this time and about an 1.25 total in the elevator.

What exactly on this one looks wrong. I built it basically exaclty like the plans except for the servo mounting.
Let me know so I can see if I can find a fix.

I welcome experience... ...

If your fuselage is 40 inches then the main wing looks a little small and as for the engine I believe you have a .60 on it which looks to big for it....dont quote me on this information , I'm new to spade building but just from the thousands of planes I have seen not to mention the one I built from a kit and the different types of planes I have flown sailplanes, gliders, trainers, and a bunch of electrics I can pretty much eye ball your plane and see it will not balance right .

Did you check the CG on it ? if yes the go for it , if not save yourself a head-ache.

It is a .46fxi on the front. taken from my Nexstar.

The fuse is 30inches... 39 from tail to nosecone.

the wings are 48inches.

the CG is a little forward yet, or nose heavy. I added some weight to the tail already, Could use a little more. It's hard to get the wings on this plane in the right spot since they are pretty much mounted permanent before everything is done. once you cut the slot in the fuse that's where they go. and you can't check the CG until you mount them completely...

the last one I built came in just under 5lbs. This one should be the same.

What do you think?

I am gonna give it a go. The lake I use to fly on has no fishouses or anything. no house around it, so I am pretty safe to expierement.

I say give it a shot but for better flights , correct the CG . The plane or any plane as a matter of fact should fly with out any control movements once its level in flight.

God luck and let us know how you make out.

Just a tip for the next low wing Spad.
Build the plane completely except for the slot in the fuse .
Use rubber bands to hold the wing on so You can slide it to get the CG correct.
Then mark and cut the slot.
Also a little up reflex in the ailerons is a good thing.
The Demon is an awesome flying Spad once You get it dialed in.

Thanks MGS, I have been reading about the troubles that some have had setting up the Demon. I have read some guys say they have a bunch of them but I have never heard them say how they fly so I was getting nervous.... TELL ME MORE! TELL ME MORE! Does anyone know where there is some video of the Demon flying?

Would you mount them with the wings upsidedown with rubber bands? I think the front spar would tilt the plane without the slot and throw off the CG if is was mount upside right.

The ailerons do have slight upflex. Basically the middle of the 4mm coro is level with the fuse. So just above level.
I had to put one weight on the tail and it is still slightly nose heavy. although the tank is not completely empty anymore so it is harder to tell. I heard a little nose heavy is good?

Any help is appreciated!

I really liked building the Demon and hope it flies well enough this time to keep me wanting more.

The cold has let up here in MN but now we have 30mph gusts. JOY JOY!

maybe get a good day to git-r-up by this wekend

just FYI........look at the beginning of the SPAD forum.....you'll see a thread that has a title of
'links to materials" and for the 2 and 1/2" gutter pipe.......it's true you can get it through the Do-It Best stores but they can require you to order (at their disgression) a full box of 10. After I contacted Genova Products (the makers of the gutterpipe) and drove over for a chat......they are well aware of us in the modeling community! Just Google them and their website can get you a distributor in your area or order direct from them however much you need. And don't beleive any rumor you hear about the stuff going away.......it's not......their Ceo said last year was the best in their history and they are looking to expand their facilities in the Davison, MI. area.....So there!

ICON

Here is a pic of my Demon (modified). I went with the twin vertical stabs and it works great. I used a trainer wing instead of the Demon wing and it still flys well. I plan on getting some of the 2 1/2" gutter pipe for my next plane, this vinyl stuff flexes too much.

Hey JD,
good to here it flies well for ya.
I saw your plane in another thread. Looks nice. I decided to go with the surface mounting servos after seeing yours among other. Also thinking about the twin verts. going to try to get it right with one first.

Well... ...
went out today and got-r-up. engine seemed to run good on the ground, half to full throttle was pretty snappy. Took off great. pinched the throttle and brought it up. throttled down to half, tried the ailerons left and right with good response. tried the elevator up and got a good response(a whole 15seconds have passed). leveled off and throttled up... ...Blllllaaaaa... the motor kills. Luckily last night I had an urge to practice deadstick landings on the sim, didn't know why at the time.
brought'er down a little tuff. tweaked the landing gear is all. Thought to myself... ...who needs straight landing gear? figured it needed to warm up some more. so I let it stand at a high idle for another min or so.
wound it up and cleaned it out, it seemed fine.
so to the runway I went. one wing was touching the ground when I started to taxi. Got it up to half throttle and the wing picked up and the plane leveled off nicely with the tail pinned down. So I gave full throttle, a tail bounce and off it went again. brought it around at about 40ft and decided I needed some more alt. so I moved the throttle up(not too fast) and BLLLAAAA... motor killed again. this time with the weakened landing gear it hit the ground and flipped the wing down snapping the spar and pulling the fire wall out. No other damage.
I have never had this problem before... ...hhhmmmm??????
well about 2hours and another five bucks and it will be as good as new

it was very promissing though. I am positive it would have flown great.

oh well... ...you can't really smile until you shed some tears right.
