HOW TO WARM UP YOUR ENGINE ON A COLD WINTER DAY:

1) DRIVE TO FLYING FEILD
2) PARK THE PLANE BEHIND YOUR CAR W/ THE VEHICAL EXHAUST BLOWING ON YOUR ENGINE
3) OPEN A CAN OF POP AND DRINK IT AT A NORMAL PACE

when ur done with your pop, your engine will be plenty warm and should fire up like its the middle of summer ... do a full round of the preflight checks after you start the engine so that everything warms / cools to proper operating temp for the day

(the carb for example will be warm from the car exhaust, but will cool to air temp after the plane is started)

im still fideling with my qhor, its looking quite nice but ive gotta get to the hobby shop to pick up the proper servo arms, i mistakenly bought hitec style instead of airtronic stlye during my shopping on towehobbies.com ... du-oh ... clicked on the wrong ones and never noticed

rc feind, the plane looks good , are ya hooked on spads yet ? lol

RC-FIEND, how much did the Plane weigh?

Thanks for the tip Hotrodkid. I always have my plane room temp when getting out of the car(fuel too). it seems that it is just cold blooded. My buddies .40LA has no problem starting when I am sitting there for about 5-10 mins to get it to fire. and that is 25+deg out. I will definitly be trying out the exhaust trick next time.

YES ! I haven't spent a dime yet to make my first SPAD it was easy to get hooked when I really notice I wasn't spending money.

The plane is about 3-5 lbs with fuel in tank. Today I attempted to fly after removing the table leg spars and I went higher into the air , about 10 feet . When I attempted to turn the plane started to wobble like a penquin. . So I tried to land and it nosed into the side of the curb and broke the engine mount wound awat from the fuse. LOL I didnt even break the flipping prop ! .

So due to no spars being in the main wing which was constructed wrong from the jump , the wobbling exist. I will get some more coroplast and rebuild the wing using rulers as spars.

Yes spars are important.

5lbs should be no problem for your .40. I would think it could handle 6-7lbs.

Cool thing is the next wing you build will take half as long and be twice as good!
You still did better then I did on the first attempt. Mine was a total loss.

Thanks I.C.O.N. I'm just happy I had the chance to build a balsa plane from plans. It taught me alot about what it takes to really design a plane and the information is helping understand the problems I am having with this first SPAD. I understand the .40 os LA will lift 3-7 lbs but the tail on the SPAD isn't as strong as a blasa built tail.

So knowing this the weight has to be carefully watched to allow the tail to do its job upon lift off. Heck all of the trainers (3) i have flown leave the ground with a tad bit of elevator.
