Status: offline 		Just picked up a new/used engine for this plane. I took the ZDZ 120 that was on it and put it on the Edge profile. I found a used ZDZ 160 on ebay pretty cheap. The engine was rebuilt a while back. The guy broke one of the muffler bolts of and screwed up the jug when he drilled them out. Eay fix though. Saved over $1,100.00 including the cowl mufflers. A week later, I won the headers and cans for another $100.00. Just mounted it up today. I'm going to fire it up tomorrow with no mufflers and see how she runs.

Status: offline 		Tried to get her running today. I could get her to light with a prime and a whiff of starting fluid but she wouldn't stay running. Won't draw fuel. Looks like a carb rebuild kit is in order.

I see that you have a lot of experience running gas engines without a cowl.
I am wondering if you ran into any problems with engines overheating?

Status: offline 		No problems with overheating at all. Within 2 minutes of landing, I can touch the cylinders and not get burned. All engines are tuned right and not run rich. I believe that cowls cook engines. Even with good baffles, the temps are still way higher than with no cowl.

Thanks for the quick response.

I love model airplanes, especially gas powered airplanes in the 50CC to 100CC range.
I don't give a hoot about scale or competing.

I would love to have CAD plans for a scratch built plane that would be low cost, easy to build,
look cool, and fly great. Saving cost by not having a cowl and perhaps not a plastic canopy
would be a means to that end.

Perhaps the biggest challenge would be comming up with a design for a
tappered nose/firewall that looks nice.

My goal is to learn autocad and come up with such a plan.

Status: offline 		Well I just took the Hulk off the side bench and put her on the main bench. I took the engine over to my buddy to get that exhaust port fixed. Picking the engine up tonight. I need to get the carb number so I can get a rebuild kit and see if I can get it to pump fuel. It's a Tillotson carb and I have not read too many postitve comments. Over at FG they had a nice thread about a bigger Walbro that works good for 150cc and up, since I've been recently laid off, I'll try the carb kit first. It's a hundred bucks cheaper.

One major thorn with this plane is the landing gear. I used locally available aluminum that is just too soft. I was to awhile back to get some T6061 from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty and I did order some. I ended up using that on the big edge. I have since ordered more for this plane. I also ordered some 1" wide 6061 for the cabanes. Some of you might remember that I had problems of the fuse wanting to crack in that area. For the time, I ran a 1" wide piece of that softer aluminum straight up from the landing gear, up the front of the cabane. All of that is coming off and being replaced with the stiff stuff. I'm also going to do the same for the back of the cabane and also box it in. I'm not worried about the extra weight. The plane floats as it is and doesn't want to land. It has more wing area than Hangar 9's Ultmate and weighs about 14 pounds less.

Status: offline 		Here is some pics of the new landing gear. I still have to trim the bottoms off. Told the kid's I'm doing it "chopper style". They didn't believe me. Next I'm adding the back vertical piece and then will follow with the horizontal pieces. Might do an angle piece.

Status: offline 		Chopped the bottom of the landing gear off. Got the engine back from welder last night. The previous owner broke a tap off in there that we couldn't see. He welded it up and we filed it smooth but we still couldn't get the threads deep enough with the tap in there. We'll probaly build up the flange with some welds and just put the holes out farther. Not worried about mufflers, I'll being running tuned pipes with custom headers built by me.
Added the rear cabane. It's super stiff now. No flying wires needed. I was afraid that I was going to have to use them. I'll just run one cross brace and call it quits in that department.
