oops. anyway here's what i came up with to save some weight. last winter when i started buying the wood for this project, the guy that i shoul use 1/2 square spruce for the spars since the plane will be pulling a lot of g's. been doing some research and this is too heavy. thing is the ribs are cut for 1/2 inch spars. i made the spars by laminating 2 pieces of 1/4x1/2x48". what i'm thinking i could do is take and cut the spar in half in between the ribs which will help me avoid cutting new rib$$$$$$. i might leave the spars doubled for the first to rib bays though to strengthen the wing next to the root. ever watch a plane fold it's wings up? look at the drawing and you'll see what i'm talking about. should't take to long to do. what do ya'll think- worth the hassle to save some extra weight?

did the cutting on the upper and lower spar for the bottom left wing last night. i took out 18" from the top spar and bottom spar total. that will definitly save some weight . that's basicaly a 1/4x1/2x36" sruce stick removed from each panel. times that by 4 and the savings adds up! also took and finished getting the rest of the othe three wing panels ribs ready-- final sanding, final sizing of the spar nothches. this stuff isn't hard to do, just time consuming. stopped at Dynamic Balsa on the way home yesterday and picked up my wing tubes. i need to get out and get going in the garage. should have some pics up by tonight.

finding the position for the wing tube. after i found where i wanted it, i took and marked it on the plans. next pic i'm putting the root ribs in place to mark them. i just took and used my small 90 degree thing (it's getting late- usually 8:00 is my bedtime. i get up at 2:30am to go to work.) next pic shows them marked. i have more pics. will post in the morning, i'm going to go crash.

last month i was looking sear's tool catalog for a drill press. then i found this thing that holdsyour handheld drill for about thirty bucks. the local store said that they would have to order it. yesterday i found one at farm and fleet. you'll see it in the first pic clamped to my band saw. with this thing you can adjust it to drill on angles, too. works pretty good.

here is the last four pics. cameron is in there for a size reference. lightening holes will be added to the ailerons and ribs before final assembly. i still have to make rib doublers around the wing tube. i will tell you that after you scratch build something, with all the "cut to, sand to" make it fit you have to do, you realy have an appreciation for laser cut kits!!!!

AFSalmon i have a question for you. the number 6 ribs are the ones that the interplane struts bolt to. do you think that they will be strong enough made up like this-- 1/8, 5ply plywood laminated with a 1/8 balsa rib. the struts will be the same 5 ply plywood (good ply). is all this good enough or should i double the ply up? i would rather not of course, to save weight and cash$$$$$$ thanks man.

MRBrigg,

Oh yes, believe me the whole strut setup with the ply tabs is very strong. Wait til you build the laminated ribs with the ply mounting tabs. You'll be amazed how strong it is.

your right Salmon. just got in from the garage. i made them the way i described earlier. the tabs seem to be stronger than what i thought they would be, just like you said.

been working too much this week. cut some lightening holes in the ribs. then i found the location for the aileron servos and notched the wing ribs for the 1/4 inch square hardwood servo mounts.
right now the top wing is on the board. after i get this one "designed", i can finish cutting the parts for the bottom wing. that way after i glue the top one together, i can start assembling the bottom one with out having to stop and cut some parts.

i hate when this happens-- I'M OUT OF WOOD!!!!!! oh, well have to get out to dynamic balsa next week. i need some 3/32 sheeting for the leading and trailing edges, cap strips, and the root sheeting. ifigured the best way to build the wing was with the wing tube installed. that way there would be no chance of the aluminum tube binding in the phenolic sleeves when assembled. i basically just assembled it like it was one piece. i had to be real careful around the root ribs, as they are clamped together, so i wouldn't get any glue on the adjoining rib. first i glued the left root rib- squaring it up of course. then i took w2 and w3 and set them in place (the wing tube goes in these ribs. next i inserted the phenolic sleeve and glued w2 and 3 to the spar after triple checking everything to make sure it was all square. then i diid the same thing to the right side. then i inserted the aluminum tube in the sleeves. no binding was going on, so i tacked the tube in place. w4, 5, 6, and 7 were glue in place. w6 has a plywood doubler and is the rib that the interplane strut attaches to. w4 and 5 are the ribs that are notched for the 1/4x1/4 hardwood servo mounts. i went ahead and glued the mounts in. i found a few pieces of 3/32 sheeting and went ahead and did the left bottom trailing edge. next i added a 1/4x/1/2 piece of balsa for the trailing edge. when i get more sheeting, i'll sheet the top trailing edge, sand flush, and then add the 1/2" triangle stock. found a nice digital camera at a decent price, so i'll be able to do pics more often guys. just have to wait to the middle of the week.

i forgot- before i assembled the wing, i took and put the plan back over the fuse. then clamped the root rib to it so that i could cut the holes for the wing tube and the aileron leads. remember that the smaller version has one piece wings, therefore no wing tubes. i found the easiest way to add them was to find the best place in the wing (between the spars would have been great, but no dice- the spars sweep back thanks to the swept wing). so then it was pretty easy, after cutting the hole for the tube in the root rib, to just line it up on the fuse, clamp and proceed to drill.

first pic is a shot of my chintzy servo lead tube that was made at the last minute. it'll work anyway. next is the servo mount. plwood doubled W6 rib that the interplane strut attatches to. fuse showing the wingtube hole cut and the 2 wing attatchment holes drilled--look closely, and you'll see them under the main rib outline. was going to wait to buy the camera, but went and broke down.

hey salmon. i was checking out marty's build on your ultimate. why did you do the shear webbing that way? is it stronger than going in between the spars or just easier? thanks man.
