I experienced problems with metanol/oil fuel stored in p.e.t. bottles(coca cola/fanta bottles):the engine died after cutting current to the plug , poor transition, problem to start.I got crazy, after triyng fuel stored in a plastic tank problems disappeared. Now I would like to understand what happens in p.e.t. bottles,a chemical reaction between plasic and alcool? moisture enter thru the plastic? obviously the cap was firmly tight. Can someone help me?

The plastic in 2 liters etc isn't designed to handle something as polar as methanol. Methanol is actually part of a relatively new recycling process to break P.E.T. down into its elements.

Either way, soda 'bottles' will allow air to diffuse through the plastic and into your soda or fuel. bako1: Maybe your Russian bottle has a layer to prevent gas exchange.

Nitro atracks moisture, So if you leave it on the floor or where the sun can get at it,And see water drops or moisture on the inside of the bottles it's wreking your fuel. Hope this helps, Jason

Methanol based fuel (nitro glow fuel) is ruined by moisture. You will not get moisture in your fuel during storage if the original bottle is used and its kept tightly caped (providing that the bottle does not have any leaks). You can check for a tight cap seal by installing the cap and giving the bottle a squeeze while listining at the cap area, if you hear air escaping, then air can obviously get in and ruin the fuel over time. As far as the little droplets that form inside the bottle walls depending on tempreture conditions, is methanol condensation droplets, not water.

To answer the original question, PET plastic can not be used for storage of methanol based fuels, PERIOD. HDPE is the universally accepted plastic material for storage of model fuels. Metal cans with a good tight sealing cap is also good.

This is actually a misconception I've seen repeated a number of times.

Those droplets you see on the inside of the fuel bottle when you leave it in the sun are actually droplets of methanol -- not water. Just like water, methanol will evaporate from the surface of the fuel then condense on the top surface of the bottle.

In fact, the methanol will evaporate and condense before the water -- that's how fractional distilation is used to separate water from alcohol -- as used in liquor stills.

You are right however that methanol is hygroscopic (attracts water) and that too much water in the fuel will affect an engine's running quite dramatically.
