Status: offline 		Well, I offered to pull off one of my 35% which perhaps would fit on the wider than normal 33%Hostettler design. Height would not be a problem, Just a matter of cutting off the bottm till fit.
Never mind. You´ll probably find someone closer to you anyway.

Status: offline 		Bob: On my 30% version I saw the same problem you show w/ your W1. Easy fix is to mark w/ pencil where W1 sits now. Then take both F13 and F14 and continue the notch where it now steps up all the way to where it hits F15. This will allow you to slide an attitional W1 flush w/ the fuse. Then you just sheet between both W1s and you are done. I may have some pics of mine way back in this thread, but I'll enclose some here to give you a visual.

Status: offline 		exactally what i was thinking, the lines are already drawn, but i wanted to hear it from someone else before turning the saw on. i also guess that the f13/14 only going 1/2 into the spar box will be fine.

Status: offline 		since i,m not going to be a scale purest with this bird, i think the simple way to retain the wings is to make the root ribs ply with eye hooks. that a few #64 rubber bands between them across the cabin roof will work fine to hold them in place.

Status: offline 		Hey Bob, Not sure if I understand what your main concern is with the wing mounting?? Is it the inserts? I haven't heard of a failure with this design. If you go back in the posts a ways you'll find "big bird" Ken Spears, he has built this plane to the plans and put it through it's paces with no problem. Maybe you ought to contact him with your concerns. He is an excellent builder and probaby would give you some guidance. Joe

Status: offline 		yea, those inserts in the root take up 1/2 the spar width. it has got to weaken it.out at the strut end you can at least put doublers inside the spar.

Status: offline 		i,m also building a 1/3 balsa usa super cub. i have a spare set of those struts that are pre shaped bass. they are the exact same size as the decathlon. will save me hours of shapeing!

Status: offline 		Hey Bob2, I finished my wings so long ago that couldn't remember much about them. But I was out in the shop today, got looking at my wings and the plans. On yours, did you fill between the spars with bass wood at the strut mounting bay? that would greatly strengthen that area. I almost missed that when building mine, there is a note on the drawing to that effect. Yours is looking good you've made fantastic progress considering your set back. You'll probably finish before me. Joe

Status: offline 		Bob: If the 33% drawings are like the 30%, the F-9 section view was incorrect on the drawing. There are no blocks on the 30%. The flying wires essentially hold the stab in place. As I had said earlier...they are functional flying wires. Enclosed is photo of the 30%. You can see that the stab is essentially free standing. You drap the fabic or other covering. The only blocks that I believe (remembering here) were shown were for cosmetics w/ helping to drap the covering. There may be some pics of Kens plan in the bones that show this same set up on the 30% early in the thread when he was just beginning to cover his plane.

Status: offline 		Hello Bob2 and tflyrc, if the 33 and 30 drawings are different in that area where does the 30% get it's strength? the flying wires are not enough unless Hostetler has done something drastically different on that version. The flying wire would not do the trick on the 33%. the elevator rudder section seems pretty weak until you add the filler blocks. I scratch built mine so I just filled those areas in with scrap balsa and shaped it. I would guess that blocks from kit cutter that are not marked, would be a challenge to figure out. Be sure you put the blocks in they are needed. If you feel unsure call Wendell he's happy to help. Joe

let me throw in my .02c

If the wires do it on the original, why wouldn´t they on the model? The secret is on the lower wires: they anchor firmly on a fuselage tab on each side - I make it from one single piece of aluminum that crosses the fuse. The upper wires transfer the rigidity of the assembly to the rudder post. That makes for a rock solid assembly, provided there are no floppy joints.
I place a pair of hardwood cross beams diagonally midship - no one can twist my fuselage except something breaks. And that rigidity is transfered to the tail asembly throught the flying wires.
In my models there is no balsa block anywhere on the tail assembly. If there was, only for drapping the fabric covering. Nevertheless, if you do it right, even without any balsa block, the covering will take the correct shape when tautening.
I am enclosing a couple of pics - again, this is my design, WH´s ist probably different but the physics should be the same.
