Jeff,
Regarding the triangle at F5; if you look at the full scale photos you and I posted the covering is scalloped slightly there. If your not too far ahead on this area you might consider estimating what shape the shrunken fabric might take without the triangle and replace it with 1/32 ply curved to desired shape. Do you know what I mean?I just think that the flat balsa triangle is not going to flow rearward without being obvious once you cover.

Newflee,

Thanks for additional tips..

This being my first 33% bird I'll be happy to be pretty close to scale !

All suggestions and comments are welcome.

I hear ya Jeff.

Actually mine is not going to be a super duper scale project either. I will make some changes but exact scale would be unnecessary for most including myself. I usually add small details over the years of the models existence. After beginning construction it has become apparent that the thickness of the fuse sides will be the largest barrier to building this big bird to scale unless a complete redesign is performed.
I hope to be adding some building pics as you have very soon. My cowl and wheelpants are to arrive tomorrow. I can't wait.

Hi all,
My cowl and wheelpants arrived today. I have to take some time to check for scale outline and such but my immediate impression is that more time could have been spent preparing the plug for these parts. I feel that a really good quality part should require a little trimming and paint and off you go. This is not the case with these parts. A nice finish is going to require a little more filling, sanding etc. than I expected.
The parts are very light weight if that is what you are looking for and no air bubbles are included. I would prefer another layer of glass myself.
All that said, Stan's was good to deal with and the parts are acceptable for the price. I just think that especially with moulded parts, a little more time on the plug pays off with every part pulled thereafter. This is something that software writers should think about as well.

Now I'm rollin on this project.

Well I see you took the easy way out with the wingtips. I like em and was afraid of how they would look kinda squared off. Thanks for the pic. Please post any others that you have. I can't tell, did you install flying wires on the tail?

Thanks,
Kendall

Speaking of the Dynaflite Decathalon, here is another shot of mine in Citabria scheme at the QSAA event in Las Vegas, the same weekend as TOC. Wingtips are slightly less pronounced. Fabric covering and painted.

Here is another pic a little closer up. It is hard to see but yes there are wires on the tail surfaces.

This one has a Brison 2.4 with Bisson Pitts muffler. It sounds great at idle.

'We Are Going Vertical Mav'

Shortly after this pic, the SD 'hovered' for about 30 seconds. The picture taker is my witness.

Great flying airplane.

I am currently building a Dynaflight Super Cub (Saito 270 twin) and another SD.

These Dynaflight kits do fly well.

Kendall

I have an aircraft named Cloudniner from RCM plans (Bill Winter). The tips on the wing are sanded to give washout. I do all of my aircrafts tips in this way when possible. I must admit it is not difficult to do, but I do like the way they turn out. The top maintains the airfoil shape while the bottom is carved and sanded up to that shape.

RSN

P.S. I tinted the windscreen and side windows with Forest Green Rite dye and a little rock salt for about 10 hours. Looks great with the yellow covering.

Cloudniner, Whered you get that picture in post 9?
That Super Decathlon in that picture belongs to Greg Koontz, who is amoung many other things, an aerobatic instructor based in Birmingham Alabama.
He gives aerobatic clinics sometimes on weekends for flying clubs ect.. as well as instructing at his home base.
I met him at an air show 2 weeks ago in Jackson Tn.
The wife works for Verizon Wireless who sponsored the show and got me a ride with him, hes an excellent pilot!
He went through nearly his whole routine while I was ridding with him.
Anyhow, he gave me one of his cards and the picture you posted is the exact picture on his buisiness card, with printing over it, maybe you got it from his website? Im looking at it on the card now but havnt visited it yet, WWW.GKAIRSHOWS.COM
Just wondering
Roger

Hey Jeff,
Started to frame up over the last couple of days. I think that the cowl has been made too tight to the firewall. The plan shows the cowl extending 2 1/4 inches rearward of the firewall, but when firewall is cut to plan dimentions, it does fit like a glove but only if its placed on the very end. In order for the cowl to fit as planned the firewall will have to be trimmed. This of coarse will change the look and the formers from the firewall to the cabin. Have you noticed this, or have I made an error? At this stage I can remedy the problem easily as I have not attatched the formers or stringers, and I hope you are not too far along if you find that you have a similar problem. The cowl as it is could neatly be installed on the plan size firewall but the overall length of the aircraft would be 2 1/4 inches longer.
Let me know what you think.

Lee

Roger, with your obviously good connection to Greg Koontz is there any way that you could, on a bright sunny day, take some high quality digital photos of the SD? I'm particular interested in the top of the wing and getting some close up shots of the decals. I assume that the top of the wing is the traditional white stars with tails pattern. Also are the stripes on the bottom of the wing red on a white background? Got a nice up right flying shot of it on the web page.

Thanks,
Ken

Newflee,

Thanks for keeping me in check on some of this stuff.

I work 2 jobs and sometimes start missing overlooking or not looking far enough ahead.

I'll look at cowl and let you know my situation.?...

Cloudniner nice SD !

Just to follow up on my last post here are some photos of what I'm talking about. Houston I think we have a problem. I will trim the firewall and formers as much as I can without disturbing the whole look.
Jeff if you confirm that I'm not crazy I will let Stan's know so that he can rework the mold.

Newflee, I see what you mean about the cowl. I'm kinda glad I've been dragging my feet lately so you guys could work out the bugs and let us know the fixes. All I've really got done is to cut out all of the ribs.

Another thought on the cowl. All of the full scale photos that I have show the fuselage continuing the shape of the scoop on the cowl back to the front of the landing gear. Also consideration needs to be given to having a sufficient cooling air outlet. It looks like on the full scale SD that all of the area behind the bottom of the scoop is open. On 3 of my Waco YMF-5s I cut a rectangular hole in the bottom of the firewall and provided a channel through the bottom of the fuselage that slanted down from the top of the rectangular cutout in the firewall to a point just in front of the gear. This looks like this would be an ideal situation for the SD since the shape of the lower cowl needs to be carried back anyway.

Newflee, let us know more about the size reduction on the firewall.

Ken

Ken,
You are correct about the cowl exhaust. I do not have great photos of this and I'm sure that the opening is more complex than just a box hole. Perhaps if you get to take those pics of that full scale SD you can shed some light on it. In fact you might want to start making a list so that you dont forget anything.
This whole cowl thing is really going to be a bugger. I really feel that the lines are going to be changed by the mods.
Have you got your cowl yet? If not hold off until we hear if Jeff agrees with the problem, and I will contact Stan's. If needed I will redesign the cowl and provide them to you guys. The scale outline was not so bad that I was going to redesign, but this fit problem is a big faux pas.

Hi All,

From the looks of it the firewall will be sanded down to allow more clearance . fuse formers ( with 1/8 sheeting) F1aa and F1ac the ones right against firewall will dictate firewall final shape of course we can do as we want. I think there will be enough material sanded off firewall to acheive proper cowl fit.

Digital cam not here. Will try to post pics tomorrow night.

The cooling issue ? Yes I like air flow out back of cowl about 1/8"
on sides and top and as much as possible on bottom.
Big Bird, I like your idea here on bottom of fuse/cowl.

Newflee, great pics, keep them coming..
