I am begining to put together the CMP Hellcat. I am planning on using a YS-120 with the new Sierra Percision retracts. Has anyone used this combination? I am wondering how this plane will balance with this set up. Anyone know where to purchase a dummy radial for this model? Any mods required for a successful build and safe flying? Thanks.

You can get a dummy engine from tower.I have the same plane,I,m putting an os 120 on it with sierra retracts.The sierra,s are the best retracts for this plane,cost is high but worth it.There is a new longer set from sierra that were made for this plane.Mine are on order now should have them anyday now takes about a week or so to get from Darrel(sierra).

Yes I just finished putting together this plane, I am using SAITO 1.50 with CJ retracts they
make them specialy for this model..check them out...

Still finishing details will probalby make Maiden flight next week..[8D]

I have a set of those cj,s but then went for the sierra,s now i,m trying to sell them.Good luck with your frist flight.Let us know how it went.

Is there any toe in adjustment on the sierra retracts? I can't find any set screw for any adjustment.

Can you guys comment on the quality of the CMPro Hellcat? I'm starting to look for my next warbird ARF and would like something different from the usual P-51's and P-47's (I have one of each, anyway). Thanks!

In My short experiance I can tell you this model is a good aquisition strong, nice detailed finish, good quality components you can actually improve with some more scale detalis..
Still working on finishing mine but hope to be flying it soon..

From these comments I can assume the plane is an O.K. purchase? About time we see some Navy planes along the flight line.

Fred, I am not using any dummy radial engine. I also have a Top Flite 1/8 scale dummy, but it's too big in diameter and won't fit without trimming away the valve covers. The dummy radial engine for the Kyosho Corsair is slightly smaller and will fit better, but it still requires some cutting. The dummy engine you see above is just a picture of the real Pratt & Whitney R2800 printed out on decal paper and pasted on 3/32" ply. That's why I said it's "cheap and cheesy". Spinner is Tru-Turn 1-1/4" prop hub.

Richard,the engine looks good not cheesyI will look out for kyosho engine.Also what size tubing are the guns made from.the spinner also looks good.

I just finished the GSP Hellcat. Thanks to a couple of guys on this forum and Richard I was able to get the right components. I went with a Saito 150, inverted pitts, and CJ retracts. They all fit nicely. I also went with a pull pull rudder and dual elevator servos. I have a 16x8 MAS 3 blade prop but I think it might be a little too much, although it does have a tremendous amount of pull.

I am waiting for a decent day to take pics and vids and I will post 'em here.

I too am finalizing not only my CMP Hellcat, but also their P-47 which is of the same quality. On the Hellcat, I went with a YS 110 FZ and Sierra retracts (should be here in the next day or two). For the Jug, I went with another YS 110 FZ (love them YSs!!) and Robart 606HD retracts with Robart 650 Robostruts. I still have my CMP P-26 waiting to be finished (using my newly acquired OS 120FSE on it) and am looking for a "reliable" place to purchase the CMP Zero. I bought all three CMP ARFs from Jet Hobbies with no problems whatsoever, however, he hasnt offered the Zero to date. I am reluctant to order from GSP from all the bad reviews I have read.

At any rate, I am sure the first three will be keeping me busy - the Hellcat and the Jug are both being repainted with Model Master paints to at least give 'em the proper colors.....

Can anyone give me a general quality assessment compared to the KMP models? I'm not so concerned with which is great and which is only good, but more interested in hearing which is horrible, if indeed one is horrible. Do you get my drift? I don't have any experience with either brand, but I have put my hands on a KMP Lightning. Thanks!

I can tell you that a 16x8 MAS 3-blade prop will be too much. I also have a Saito 150 in mine with Slimline inverted Pitts, and it spins a 16x8 MAS 2-blade prop at only 8400 rpm. My guess is that your 150 will spin a 16x8 3-blade at around 6700 rpm, which is way below the engine's power band and not healthy for the engine. I'm thinking about replacing my 150 with a YS 120FZ.

Also, you have to be very careful when starting your inverted Saito 150. The center line of the fuel tank is around 1.25" higher than the center line of the carb, so fuel tends to siphon down into the carb and flood the engine when starting. I wasted half a day at the field trying to start my inverted 150. Everytime I flipped the prop over, the engine would hydrolock and I had to remove the glow plug to let excess fuel out. I think I got it figured out now. Should have gone with a YS at the beginning. By the way, a YS 110 is more than enough for this bird.

Richard, you are right about the carb filling up with fuel. I noticed it but I did not have a hard time starting the engine. I was also thinking that the prop might be a little too much. I actually ordered a 16x6 3 blade but I don't MAS makes one. I will keep looking around before I fly it. For now, I am just slowly breaking in the engine (oooohing and awwwwing) and waiting for a decent fly day. Thanks again for your knowledge on this plane.

James, you might want to try a Graupner 15x8 3-blade.

Yes I am having a hard time finding a 16x6. 15x8 should do better. I will put the RPM meter on it and see what it is turning.
