I've had a couple other suggestions on the C50... some are saying 14 max... but I did see the DP Extra video and was impressed but thought I read it was 11.5 lbs...

If the C50 would do the job, then I'm all for it...

The "good" thing about purple power is that if I get one and it isn''t enough there is a market for it and should retain decent resale value. Testing out some of the other options is more scary in that if it isn't enough, then finding a buyer would be more difficult and I don't want a $400 paperweight...

So... let's say I use a C50XL... and probably a Hacker Master 90 ESC, 10S3P TP Pack....

What prop would you recommend? a 22x12?

What other items are prefered? A UBEC? or should I go with a seperate lipoly battery and reg for the receiver?

Status: offline 		22X12 with 10S and the 15XL. I used that combo in my Dave patrick edge (sister to the DP extra aero-model has). The 24X12 is usable with 9S, but pushes it well over 3000 watts with 10S which is too far above the motor's ratings. 22X12 with the 15XL and 10S works well, up to about a 16 lb plane assuming you want hover/3D performance,k but at the moment, that's pretty much the limit for a single motor plane. If higher gearing was available, a larger prop could be used, and I think we could push the ultimate weight limit higher. For instance, my XL is 1600+ square inches, 90 inch span, and 3D's marvelously on a C50 XL with only 7S and about 120~130 watts per pound, but that's spinning a 24 inch prop and the plane is only 9 lbs. The real "limit" at the moment, other than total watt capability, is the prop size. Going up to 10S and 2000 to 2500 watts should be able to 3D a much larger plane, but gearing is not available to spin the 26~28~30 inch prop you really need to spin.

Status: offline 		I've thought about the double-vision myself,.. and would really like to convert it, and use a single motor setup. I think it would be wonderfull with a C50 XL on 10S at 2500 or so watts peak, but only if spinning a big prop (27X13 is the largest APC "E" prop currently available, so that would be the goal). However, there is no gearbox available to allow that.

Status: offline 		What Gary said. He has way more time on these big electrics. As for the Ubecs, they are a nice product and work well. I'm using them in my H9 1/3 scale Edge. You could also run a seperate pack, it just depends how much faith you have in the Ubecs and if you can remember to keep it charged. Gary also has a lot more time on them(Ubecs) as well and I'm sure will chime in.

Status: offline 		Keep it charged? I thought they took power from your big packs and basically regulated it to 4.8 -6 volts for your receiver and servos?

Status: offline 		I think one of the greatest items to come out for larger electrics is the U-bec. I'm using quite a few of them, a dozen or more. I've heard all of the arguments pro and con for seperate reciever batteries, and the only crashes I've had from losing radio power were from not remembering to charge a seperate reciever battery. The U-bec eliminates that possibility, so I use them in everything except the little planes where the BEC in the speed control does the job. Rojo's big edge has more servos than anything I'm using them with, but I use them with up to 5 digital 9151 servos (my purple E3D-XL) and 4 3102's plus two digitals in my 1/4 scale pitts. Never a problem. I put far more trust in the U-bec than I put in myself to keep a reciever pack charged.
