csandt051196 -> TwinStick turned to a TriStick (1/13/2005 5:44 PM)

I have had this kit lying around for years and finally decided what to do with it. I build it and stuck a third engine on the nose. I extended the wing to increase the wing area. The first one I had I left as a twin but it flew like a rock. So I thought with the extra weight I better change the wing a little. I added six inches to the over all wing length.

I finished the construction and am working on mounting the wing to the body. I am changing it from rubber bands to bolt on. I put an engine on one of the nacelles and the engine on the nose so I could see how cool it looked and then I noticed something. The props overlap and that concerns me. Do you think that will create some bad turbulence? The nose engine is about 5 inches in front of the two on the wing.

I will have it completely finished next month and will post a picture of it then so you can all tell me what a bad idea this really was.

Your thoughts???

Scott

It is a great idea to put a gyroscope … oh engine …in the center. It will fly better and engine out will be almost a non-problem. The turbulence is probably not important but the overlap is more than a little dangerous to body parts. Consider moving the wing engines out one bay if construction is not too far along.

Moving the nacelles out one bay was the first thing I thought of when I saw the wing sitting on top of the body, but it is to late as I am finished with construction. All that is left is sanding before I cover. I may add a remote glow and I for sure will never be adjusting the nose engine once the other two are running. Live and learn.

Thanks
Scott

Good luck on your project. Can we have some pictures with the understanding that you are not finished?

Finally finished it. Will start with the engines as soon as I can. I will let you know if it flies.

You did correct to add wing length to get the loading down. Note mine with longer wings and wing plates to further decrease wing loading.
Now program the outer engines to die upon landing and taxi back on only the center. We live to please the crowd!!

It is very impressive. Starting the engines may require concentration to keep fingers and arms away from the props. Might even be the hardest part of the entire flight. Good luck on the test flights. Thanks for the picture.

You know, with Cedar Hobbies new Twin Stick ARF.........The possibilities are mind bending!!!!
By the way this flew VERY well for many years.

Good point. My two cents with these multi's...at the risk of a soapbox... ALWAYS use a partner with mutli's. Much more so than with a single...which is also a good idea. Start the engine farthest from you first and work toward your body. If one engine, in the middle or farther away from you stops. STOP THE ENGINES that are between you and the non running engine DO NOT REACH ACROSS a running engine or even adjust one.
Off the soapbox.
This is fun, let's not get hurt.

Well a few hours spent getting all three engines running correctly and zoom off to the sky it went. It also took a little jousting from the other members in the cub. One of them even called me a chicken s____, but it was all in fun. Only a little aileron trim and it flew very well. Once my nerves settled down it flew even better. Three engines is a real treat once they are running together. It does sink when you reduce power and I had it just a little bit tail heavy.

If there is any lurking out there who is planning to do the same thing I would make the rudder and elevator larger than stock and I would move the two nacelles out at least one bay to not have any overlap of the engines. You really have to think while you are starting the engines on this.

You are right on the larger rudders. I did do that on my twin fuse version. As far as the elevator...mix the ailerons to the elevator. Up elevator and down ailerons. You will not be sorry.. Turn off for landing or will balloon in any wind.
Good Luck,,,,,,,,uh.......your heart rate down yet?

Ed_Moorman -> RE: TwinStick turned to a TriStick (4/6/2005 4:02 AM)

Hey, Twinman, on your twin fuselage plane, were the rudders very effective? I have just tested a twin fuselage Sky Raider and was able to easily do a knife edge Immelmann. I don't think the stock, single fuselage one will do this. At least the ones I have flown have been pretty wimpy on control. I chickened out trying to finish the knife edge loop because it was the first day of testing and I hadn't really felt the plane out completely.

I am using 2 HS-5625 digital servos and a 6v pack, so this may have something to do with rudder power. The rudders aren't very large compared to fun fly or 3D planes.

twinman -> RE: TwinStick turned to a TriStick (4/9/2005 3:27 AM)

Hi Ed,
Originally I used the stock rudders, but eventually I enlarged almost 50% as shown to, as you said increase knife edge. Mixing the engines to the rudders, REALLY make knife edge easy, but need large engines. Mine were ST 90's. This picuture is actually the same plane, but it became a "Kind of 200' standoff P-38".
Good Luck,
Twinman
