Started chopping wood on a 50" ws set of plans to be powered by a Rossi81/Turbax. Not much info on the full scale I can find, but looking at pix of plastic models and one 3 view, appears it had flaps, elevons and leading edge slats or flaps and some triangular gizmos on the rear called trimmers-like flaps going upward. The plans call for elevons only but wondering if some of the extras would help or just look good. Any knowledge of this plane or experience with the model? Bill S.

The plans are by Eugene Martin. Bought from the M.A.N. plans section-about $36 with s&h. They send a photo copy of the magazine construction article which doesn't tell you much. No too bad if you've got some experience. I sent a note to Mr. Martin who had the fiberglass canopy, but no response. I think the design was in the 1993 era. Bill S.

I have one of Mark Frankel's Skyray kits waiting to be started but first in line on the building table for this fall/winter. It is considerably larger than the one you are working on. Fuselage is fiberglass with foam core wings and vertical stab. This one will be turbine powered. I got a gorgeous set of custom retracts from Sierra Precision.

I am indeed envious, makes me think of Midnight Airplane supply! What's your address? I saw the article in a '93 MAN on the construction, also in '93, they did the construction article on my version-Eugene Martin's version. The Skyray had spring operated L.E. slats-air pressure closed them; and the trimmers, does your kit have operating ones? I can't tell if they move up and down, or just up. I built 1 1/2 Schreckling turbines and thought I'd rig mine for DF and am still trying to cannebalize them to get one running. Would love to see a pic of your gear. Is it pretty scale? Who is kitting your version, by the way?

Bill S.

I have had the privlage to fly for Mark Frankel with his Skyray's and can provide some input for you.

The full scale F4D aircraft is fitted with Trimmers, Slats, and Speed Brakes (T & B of fuse.). However, there are NO FLAPS.

Mark is considering building a larger version of his Skyray to incorporate all these features.

My brother (Keith Sterner) has generated a CAD 3-View from FACTORY DRAWINGS with cross sections etc. for Mark which was approved by the AMA Scale commitee for Scale Competition documentaion

Contat Mark @ 610-525-6323 and he may be willing to sell you a copy of this subject 3 View.

Steve, I know Mark pretty well and I have seen his Sky Ray fly often. You won't be disappointed in the plane. It is very scale and a good flyer.

This one has been operating here downunder for several years now. This picture taken at the NZ Nats in 2003. Scratch design/build by the guy shown with it. Turbine powered and regularly operates off grass. Brilliant performer. I can put you in touch with Allen if you like.

Great looking 'Ford'! Looks like it's bigger than the one I'm building, would like to get some info from the builder. Bill S.

Da.......m.. you, another plane to buy! I loved the video. The long t/o roll and low climbout looked so good. What a little screamer. O.K., how much a couple a' bucks we talkin' here? The wife's new washer can wait a month or two, my gramma used a scrub board!

wsmalley, if you are talking to me, I am glad to be of assistance :-). By way of further assistance they usually are at the Toledo show and have all of their stuff available for sale and no, I am not affiliated with them in any way. I do have one of their F-86 kits in the "get to it some day inventory" I wonder how that would do as an electric DF ?

I've had the opportunity to watch the Sky-Ray in action at Top Gun a couple of times.
For some reason they did not seem as stable as other aircraft (especially during take off).
This is strictly my own observation.
I have seen a couple of them crash at Top Gun.
Pilot error? Cross wind? Radio, Engine problems?
I don't know, but I sure felt sorry for the pilots who put so much time and effort into them.
They are a good looking plane.
Wishing you the best.
Ron
