Going back to the A380, it looks like its getting its Airworthiness certificate on the 12th of this month. It will be a nice break for the guys at airbus I am sure. The management have cocked up royally for sure, but there is no doubt that the guys workin on the shop floor did a fantastic job with this aircraft, so congratulations to them.

Hey Strykaas, You better keep away from those classic French "Yeah right, they landed on the moon!" jokes so much enjoyed here in Europe!
Or those Bush administartion "We know the names of the Hijackers because we found their Passorts in the rubble, Knock knock jokes some years back.
So popular in Brussels. How can you end so many jokes with that line... it's just amazing!
Without doubt the funniest thing to come out the Benilux countries.

Loved it.

OK
I just was cruisin around and looked at the posts here. My answer as a A+P IA is , when it comes to maintenance... BOEING kicks AIRBUS butt! Unofficailly most mechaincs still know that airbus airplanes are the "disposable" kind (sorta like a YUGO car was back in the 80's) and I can back that up with one easy question.... HOW MANY airbus birds out there are over 30 years old and STILL allowed to fly passengers?? It's just a simple question.

Aw geez, let's not start another war.

It would be easy for someone to simply say Airbus or the European regulators have higher standards- no way to answer that question within an absolute context. Let's just not say anyone kicks anyone else's butts period!

Well said Mulligan. Plus the A300 entered service in mid 1970's, so most airbus aircraft families aren't even 30 years old yet.
Whats more important is the incredible safety record that both Boeing and Aribus have as of late. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there has bveen a fatality on an A340 or 777 as of yet.

had the chance to see the A380 from close up this time landing in Taipei. it's big. it made the two 747's next to it look small. the turbofans must be at least twice the size (intake area) than the 747 and the tail stick out a good few meters. but it just looks like a big fat airbus.

i didn't have the chance to look inside but my friend did get a pass to look around the cabin and said the posh lounges, mini gyms and sleepers are absent. only a lone sofa adorns the first class cabin. the rest of the plane is seats... rows and rows of seats. she wasn't impressed.

so what does this all mean? no clue. but i'm sure the airbus isn't going away. but i'm putting my bet on the dreamliner. it's the wave of the future. the A380 will survive but only if they consider cargo and combi's, both of which i heard were axed due to development costs. a grave mistake in my opinion. grave.

With all the A380 delays (first delivery has been slipped for the third time to October 2007 - anyone taking bets on whether that date is gonna hold?), reckon the door is opened for Boeing's 747-8, especially for current 747 operators (parts, training, support are already in place) -

The way things are going at Airbus, the Boeing 787 may be available before they can deliver And, yes I like California wine

Cheers!

Jim

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/747family/747-8_facts.html

"The 747-8 Intercontinental is the only jetliner in the 400- to 500-seat market, stretched 5.6 m (18.3 ft) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats in a three-class configuration and a 14,815-km (8,000-nmi) range. Using 787-technology engines, the airplane will be quieter, produce lower emissions, and achieve better fuel economy than any competing jetliner. Compared to the 747-400, the 747-8 Intercontinental will provide nearly equivalent trip costs and 10 percent lower seat-mile costs, plus 28 percent greater cargo volume. Operating economics will offer a significant improvement over the A380. The 747-8 is more than 11 percent lighter per seat than the A380 and will consume 10 percent less fuel per passenger than the 555-seat airplane. That translates into a trip-cost reduction of 19 percent and a seat-mile cost reduction of more than 3 percent, compared to the A380. Both the 747-8 Intercontinental and 747-8 Freighter can use the existing infrastructure and ground equipment at most airports worldwide."

I wonder if the A-380 will replace the Concorde? One thing I won,t have to wonder about is when, I will be asked to do a 360 while a 380 shoots the ILS here at Lihue International. Ha Ha

In my book anyone that builds an aircraft that can only land on just a handfull of airports around the world ain't too brilliant.

Your book therefore states that the Concorde ain't too brilliant. Hum.

Delivery schedules lag illustrates the technical challenges behind such a big a/c.

TA-DA . Who has won the super-mega-multi-billion-dollar contract ???
I'm afraid to think all your fighters will be refueled by an airbus cargo plane.

Absolutely not. But many guys in this thread would believe so . Just re-read the thread and see yourself.

Haha well put Joel. I don't think many actually are able to.
However, you might just be flammed to death because of this post. Take care !!
Sacre Joel, toujours le post pour rire ...

And by the way, what about that 787 that would reportedly be "on time" ? What about the delays ?

Oh I've read Boeing might sue I dunno who about this contract. I've read that the congress could "block" the deal. Is that what you call "free trade" ? Free trade only when it comes to US companies winning contracts. Boeing loser . Period. Move on.

Actually learned the Metric System in Grade school many years ago.
Have to use it when working on vehicles and other things in the US anymore as it is more and more accepted.
It is interesting that a lot of French Workers are not happy with the fact the the tankers will be built or modified over here. Instead they feel that it should be built completely in Europe.
So it seems that we have more in common than you think, as it seems that we are all proud of what our country can do and want the jobs to stay as close as possible. Of course even the 767 is not entirely made here but has many parts that come from other locations. I do not know of a manufacture that does not out source a large qty. of their work overseas anymore. I have heard thru a few sources that Dussalt is looking at building a factory over here to build Falcon Jets as the cost of labor is low when compared to France. They will keep the military aircraft over there but civil aircraft are being looked at being moved to save cost and increase profits for the company. A number of companies have done this already from Asia, Toyota, Honda etc. They have built plants here to cut cost in the building of cars and trucks. It provides good paying jobs in the US and helps local economies by increasing the tax base that the communites rely on. Aircraft is very much a global environment and we all depended upon each other to get these aircraft built.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out as Boeing has decieded to protest the awarding of the contract to EADS / Northrup Grumman.
So it looks like it will be a little while longer before we find out who will be building the new Tankers.
But the fallout from this could hurt everyone wether you are on this side of the pond or on the other side.
John
