Ever seen how much fuel a ship uses? I think they need alternate sources of power too.

We already have an excellent, proven, safe alternate source for ships as well as power generation.

Now we just have to kill all the "Eco-Freaks" to take full advantage of nuclear power.

There will always be heavier than air travel. I'm willing to bet someone will come up with an alternate power source for airliners before we start booking for out three week ship journey across the atlantic.

That's what I mean. We'll be using planes for a long time. We will see RPT spacecraft before ships take over again. Imagine... Anyware to anyware in no more than a few hours

What's this "we"? Sure, the politicos and "captains" of industry will be swanning about in whatever form of transport takes their fancy. For the ordinary bod in the street, motor transport using fossil fuels is going to become as unreachable as it was in the beginning of the 20th Century. Much as I enjoy using IC engines, it is a stupid waste of resources to be burning oil derivatives in them. With present rocket technology, we will all be gassed before anyone gets anywhere if we try to match the levels of mass tranportation we enjoy now.

WOW! This thread has shown the amount or arrogance and iggnorance that is still prevelant in our society, I will say grow up and get over it. I just found the thread and having had followed this project for a while I am glad to see this new big bird. Of course every manufacturer has some faults so we need to recognize that. Who cares how much runway it will take? Who cares about blah blah blah. Its not like any of you are going to buy one for personel use!!!?? People are still buying Cadillacs when gas proces are over $2.30 a gallon here! Lets all boycott these large unsafe airliners and when we have to travel across the ocean lets all hope the Cessna 172 has enough fuel in its wings to get us across!

jeesh..

anyways, my point is its a beutiful airplane that has at the very least raised some eyebrows..maybe not the bar but time will tell.

Who exactly was Bill insulting? I didn't see anyone wth a screen-name of "eco-freak". There's a difference between insulting another poster directly and disparaging some abstract undefined group. You need to do more than just read the rules, you need to interpret them realistically, like per the dictionary, not thru some politically correct filter that changes the meaning to suit your point of view.

Or maybe there's an eco-freak among us...

I wasn't going to say this....but the thing that bothers me about a plane
that big....is the body count in a wreck....

FBD.

No worse than having two 747s collide on a runway (Tennerife, Canary Islands)...but anyway....

Boeing is kicking butt on 777ER/787 orders and Airbust is going to lose their shirts on the A380. Plus the 747 advanced is going to be more efficient and have more range. We live in interesting times. The A380 may well be the flagship cargo plane but people won't want to fly in that cattle car.

Only future history will prove me right or wrong.

The A-380 just landed after its first flight. I watched the live feed from the BBC site.
Not surprisingly the first flight went without a hitch.
Well done Airbus.
