By looking at this vid, I assume there was some severe cross winds ... Look at how the pilot uses rudder pedals ... Astonishing !

And there you have it. . . . now, just using rudder pedels is Astonishing! First a big airplane and now. . . . rudder pedels. Poor Boeing doesn't have a chance.

Wow, that DOES look quite squirrelly for such a big plane... wonder if there was no ballast and it had a particularly light wing loading at the time.

Don't want ot get into the Airbus/Boeing controversy here, IMHO enough really stupid comments/arguments have been made by both camps.

Just one thing though :
Some of you keep arguing about wether the A380 or the 787 are the new "big boy on the block", who will "kick the other's butt".....
I think this is just silly since the 2 airplanes are in totally different categories, and can't be compared to each other.
787 : 2 engines, 290-330 pax, A380 : 4 engines , 550 - 800 (?) pax, etc. , etc.

The only thing these 2 have in common is the air through which they will fly.

Exactly its been made look like only one aircraft and so only one company can be succesful but they both have scope to be very succesful aircraft.

why the huge debate?

It's French.

It goes backwards quite well.

As the name indicates -- I'm Boeing qualified......and wouldn't trade seats on any French creation for any reason.

Period.

Mile high club? How about in a Navion with an early Lear autopilot, circling miles out over the Atlantic ocean? More than 50 years ago, now.

Bill.

It will be used by Boeing to transport parts for the 787. I believe they are modifying 3 747's.

Well, so far no project leaders on the 787 have been fired. So far so good. How's the former 380 program manager doing?

Yep, the whole back end swings open. You can see the hingeline and fairings in front of the vertical stabilizxer in the head-on shot.

Recent rumblings are that the A380's landing gear is taking a beating and may not be up to the job when it comes to operating at most existing airports.

When are the US going to ban A380s from US airports ? That would not astonish me ...

Likely not going to happen. It would be "banned" only if:

1) It did not comply with airworthiness standards
2) It's too heavy for the runways, taxiways, and ramp areas that must support it.

I don't think Airbus is stupid enough to build a plane they could not get to comply with the airworthiness standards.

The aircraft makers usually design their airplanes so that the weight is well-distributed. That's why the Boeing 777 has the six-wheel trucks on the main landing gear. That's why the B747 has four main trucks.

The only real test is economic: If the airlines have a use for the airplane, they'll buy it. If it doesn't fit an airline's economics, they won't buy it. If enough airplanes are sold, Airbus will be happy. If not, then they'll not be happy. Simple.

Whether a company makes the newest, largest airplane, or a smaller one that's a technological marvel, you still have an incredible airplane. In the end, the airplane that helps its airline make the most (or lose the least) amount of money is the one that will sell. Only time will tell. As technology, though, the A380 is quite an airplane, as are the B777, Dreamliner, and even the latest 737 variant. Modern tech is making some wonderful things happen in aviation. It's all a wonder to me! ....and I love it all!

First of all, the A380 is not even certified yet, much less in production or in service.
Hard to ban an airplane which isn't even flying regularily, yet.

Second, I agree with Bax, no company would be stuoid enough to build an airplane in this category, without thinking about how not to exceed runway limitations. Also, keep in mind, the A380 will fly all over the world, not only in the US, and the european and asian airport managers are just as worried about the health of their runways as the US airport managers.

As to the "recent rumblings" about the A380's landing gear, they are just that : rumblings ! So far, without confirmation.
It may well be that there is some kind of issue, if so, it will be adressed. No airplane this size, be it Boeing, Airbus, or whatever, goes from the drawing board ( nowadays the computer screen ) to production without any type of hiccups, sometimes major ones.

When the 747 was designed, Boeing had a very hard time to keep the bird from becoming overweight, and once it was in service, for the first few years it was troubled by engine prblems. But Boeing kept correcting problems and improving and eventually made the 747 into a very reliable airplane. Same thing happened with the first Airbuses, the A300's, and will probably happen again with the A380, as well as the 787.
