this plane just begs for onboard video

be better off watching the scenery go by underneith then trying to track it by hand thru a viewfinder

Yeah, that is the most Bad-A** speed plane I have ever seen--- How about some more pictures before the maiden?

So Erik is the test-pilot?

OFF THE HOOK seems about right.....

Razor,
I am the proud owner and the test pilot.Dave is the builder and a close friend. He has built many dusts, and the last clipped wing dust he built me was the fastest prop plane I have ever seen, and I've been doing this since 1975.I fragged it due to rising terrain on a 6" pass at the end of last summer, and Dave has built me this magnificent, radical replacement. The maiden will be late March, and we plan to have pics and video.I'll try to attach a pic of the single dust w/Jett50.

Razor, most of the building thread i did post as i progress though the project, here the first and last picture of the layout and handing over to Erick. Th plane came together so nicely it's scary, hope i didn't over look anything even the charger jack & switch fit nicely behind the fuel cell cover. later dave

The "bar" for what INSANE means has been raised to new heights! I wonder if those would catch on for a new pylon racing class ?

It would get eaten alive on a pylon course by any Q40, or FAI. It might have a chance against a quickie.

Pylon racing is a turning event, two 180 degree turns and 1/4 mile of distance in about 5 1/2 seconds. It has been shown that it takes a high aspect ratio wing to fly thru the turns without slowing down. The drag in the turns is inversely related to the square of the wingspan. Your 36" span vs a 56" Q40, I'll take the Q40. The FAI are even faster with even higher aspect wings.

This is not a knock on what you are trying to do. Your plane should be able to crack 230 in level flight with ease and perhaps a great deal more.

Unfortunately, Highplanes is almost certainly correct. Its funny to me all the craziness/expense guys go through to go fast on the Extreme Speed Planes thread when you go much faster than 95% of the planes here with a GP Viper and 40 Sport Jett with a Q500 muffler.

I'll have to disagree. With these two engines they won't be able to take full advantage of the props for speed unless they start making their own. Acceleration is going to be phenomenal and there's not that much of a loss in the turns. I don't know who I'd put money on in a race, but a class of their own would be a spectator sport for me. My eyes don't work that fast yet! Cool work XXSpeed!
I can see it now. Someone says " Where you going? It's time for the maiden!" Erik says" DEPENDS." (get it? more diaper jokes...)

I hate to see this thread, or for that matter this forum DEVOLVE into a discourse on what is faster, this or that. The object here is to have fun, and get some excitement generated. To pump adrenaline. The coolness factor of this plane , it's brute power and awesome looks are what we should be focused on. I think I would PAY to see a heat flown with 3 of these up at a time, can't say the same for the "rule book" ARF racers.

Yes the hinges are seal with clear vinyl, and how fast i can only say the 2 JETT 50 will put out about 6 hp, the plane weights 6 lbs. the props will be in the range of 8 x 10 @ 19,000rpms. I think it will do 220 striate up as long as you want, if anyone has a thought regarding speed using the above info i would be interested in here about it. later dave

You asked for thoughts about speed using the above information. Here it is. The absolute maximum speed that prop at that rpm will achieve is 178.6mph. That is theoretical speed in straight and level no wind assisted flight. It also ignores any prop inefficiencies and airplane drag. A figure that is bandied about when trying to estimate drag and prop loss is 80% of the theoretical top speed. This is a somewhat rough estimate. So, 178.6 mph x 80% =142.88mph

142.88mph straight and level is a long way from 220mph straight up.

Ed S

PS. Highplains and AdrianM are correct. My Quicky racers go faster than that on a pylon course.

Ed,
What props/rpm are you running on the pylon course? I think the efficiency will be much higher with all the prop disc they've got, but where to get the props for a twin like this? I don't think you can get but so high with the pitch on an 8" prop and a 10 pitch is pushing it. They need more rpm's!

Ed,

There is a slight misconception in regard to the 80-85% prop efficiency. That is a measurement of power transfer from the engine to pulling power on the airframe. It is not related to prop slippage. In other words, if your airplane weighs 6 lbs. and you dropped it unpowered from a very high altitude while pointed straight down, it would eventually reach it's terminal dive velocity. OK, at this point the thrust (6# of weight) would equal it's drag. If you can determine it's velocity in this dive, then you can calculate the horsepower required for that speed. From that point if you change the weight are repeat the test, you can predict quite accurately the terminal dive speed at all other weights.

So if you have a total of 6 horsepower in the engines, and you know that the props are 80% or 85% efficient range, you can calculate the speed that the airplane should be able to achieve if the correct props are used. It is a straight forward relationship of horsepower to speed that is a cubic function. Double the power only increases speed by 26%, though in this case it will be slightly less, because power applied to two propellers is less efficient than if it was applied to a single propeller.

The final thing to consider in estimating the top speed on prop size is that engines unload in the air. Part of the problem is the rpm limitation with tuned pipes. When we ran open exhaust in Formula One, our engines could unload 5K in the air, but most of the piped engines are not set up for that much. You can do that, but you will not be able to get "on the pipe" until you dive enough to unload the engine and actually push the engine to the higher rpm. Very user unfriendly at that point.
