I'm building a 1/6th scale P-47 "Torrid Tessa" (shown below) and I want to be accurate with my documentation. This picture has been published in several books and is always exactly the same. The info usually reads

"A P-47D-RE (S/N 44-20878) in the foreground of the 12th Air Force's 350FG/346FS soars through Italian skies. 110-gallon drop tanks on each pylon. The Allies had complete control of the skies in the Mediterranean theater by the end of 1944, when this picture was taken, and marking schemes often became quite colorful, as with the plane in this photo (but they are all B&W). The black checkerboard pattern on the rudder marks this plane as belonging to the 346th FS. equipped with P-47D from July of 1944, the 350th FG was largely responsible for the Allies' winning the skies of the region."

or

"Strikingly marked P-47Ds of the 350th FG's 346th FS on a long range mission over Italy. Lack of bombs suggests a strafing attack when the aircraft reached its target, where the P-47 battery of guns would have been quite able to destroy a range of vehicles, aircraft and installations used by the enemy."

I have been unable to locate any additional images or color information about the 346FS. The only other information found was about Raymond Knight (Medal of Honor winner) and his aircraft with the one number lower 602. The 603 aircraft (Torrid Tessa)

1. Black checkered tail: was this on a natural metal background or a color like yellow?

2. How can I determine the colors for the "Torrid Tessa" graphic? Can I just make an educated guess? Are the personalized graphics usually in the same standard US colors?

3. Is this photo enough documentation to enter a scale contest with? I would also have standard 3-views and such reference.

4. Would my model be required to have all three drop tanks when being judged for scale accuracy?

5. This aircraft has some type of additional graphic on the side in front of the star & bars, but is impossible to make out. Should I just leave it off or guess?

Anyone's help, direction or advice would be most helpful. Perhaps this should be in the Scale section, but I though warbird enthusiasts would have better info.

Thx,
Kregg
