Don't make me tell the folks here what NFO 'really' stand for, OK??

I went to CT School at Correy Field in the 60's - would occasionally get to Saufley on Saturdays to look around. We would also see the Blue Angels occasionally making passes over our field as they did practice manuevers...

There was an electric R/C model of a P-3 in the July 2006 issue of FM, page 30

Status: offline 		N1 - I got my Primary Training at NAAS Cory field in the SNJ 1953, and instructed in the T-34 at NAAS Saufley 1959-1962.

Status: offline 		The runways were still there in 1966, but no flying activity. The hangars had all been converted into CT schools (Communications Technician). That great old Operations building with the tower on top was still there into the 70's, but I haven't been back there since. I jumped rates to an Aviation rate (AW) in the mid-70's and was never able to go back. I'd love to take a peek back there now...

The runways got some token use, at least. That was where I saw some very early R/C flying...

Status: offline 		I went back to Saufley once. It was in good shape, still what you'd call an attractive base. One of my old room-mates from Kings Point was CO at one time. He's a retired Capt USN, and a retired sea captain as well.

He lives aboard his 43' ketch with his wife, in Key West for the winter, then takes his 32' Airstream motor home up to Nova Scotia for the summer, stops here twice a year for a get together. We always get falling down, tongue tied DRUNK!

I'll see him again in Nov.

Status: offline 		Havn't checked this site in a while. Cory still looks like you remember it. You can still see the runways and the building with the tower on it is still there along with all of the converted hangers. I went through primary at NAS Pensacola a few years ago.
Oh an NFO stands for No Future Outside. I guess I will have to retire from the navy now. It may have been your idea but a RC P-3 would be a lot of fun. After deployment I might have to try and come up with some plans and start working on one.

Status: offline 		Hmmmmm, well to my recollection, especially to us 'Tube Rats', was that NFO meant Non Flying Object :-D

It was always nice when you could describe a pilot as someone who 'drove us to work'.....

Well I guess I will post too, I havent been in the AF or military not nearly as long as most that have posted here....but anyhow....I am currenty AD stationed at Columbus AFB, MS as a T-37 Instructor pilot. Like another guy here, I am a FAIP (First assignment IP), right out of pilot training to instruct others in the T-37. I have about 9 months left here at Columbus, and anyday now I should get my follow on. I am hoping for the Viper (F-16), but it is literally any day now my Squadron Commander is going to give me the word on my assignment.....Kepping my fingers crossed! Its great to see so many other Military dudes present and former into R/C. I fly right off the old SAC Alert Ramp adjacent to the runway on the weekends. Myself and a few other IPs normally fly on saturday mornings and occasionally we will see the Ops Group deputy commander come out and fly his sturdy Bird. If any of y'all are out near Columbus, MS and want to fly, we have literally miles of open concrete to use, its great! Take care!

A Question for the others on Active duty currently, mainly Air Force folks: Does your base let you fly on or near the runways when no one else is flying? Big RC contingent nearby? I hope when I leave Columbus, it will be the same....or close to it, because I need my R/C fix now and then.

Status: offline 		ive been going back to college to get a masters in aerospace engineering, joined ROTC.. have a slot, i have a choice between F-15 or A-10.. im thinking of holding out a year , and hope for the shot at an f-16, but i dont know all the details just yet. My origional intent for military was to join the navy, and fly f-14s, but when i was told they were goin to be decommissioned, i turned to air force.

Sorry to say that the F-14 has already been decomissioned. It made its last trap somewhere around the July timeframe.

In its day, it was a sexy, potent airplane but it's time has come, much like other great planes of the past.

Just remember this about a USAF or Naval Air career - you actually get paid to fly those things!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Status: offline 		If you don't have a pilot training slot from a Guard unit, you don't have an Eagle or a Hog or anything else. You'll go to pilot training if you can, do your best, put in your request, and you'll get whatever satisfies the needs of the service. Holding out for a year only makes you one year older and that much less likely to get into pilot training in the first place.

8 years going on 20. I spent 1.5 years on a river tender in Keokuk, Iowa of all places. Now I'm an Aviation maintenance technician working and serving as dropmaster (yes we actually drop survival gear out the bottom!) on the HU-25. I'ts basically a Dassault Falcon 20/200. I haven't traveled the world, but I've seen a lifetimes worth of the Caribbean, From Florida all the way down to Venezuela. Strange how you get used to flying in a "business!" jet at 500-1000 feet at 200 knots hundreds of miles from land and don't think twice about it.

Status: offline 		I spent 22 years/3months active duty USAF. Retired in 2003. Flew aboard E-3A/B/Cs AWACS as a weapons director, senior director, and Mission Crew Commander and got to push my share of desks. Was the most fun I've had in my life. Like others have said, I would do it all over again......the icing was getting paid to do it !!!! Been all over the world and have to say nothing beats living in the US. To all the guys and gals on AD/Guard/Reserve as well as in the Army/Navy/USMC/Coast Guard that have stepped up to uphold the banner of freedom...............I salute you. Thanks for all the sacrifices you and your loved ones endure for the cause of liberty.

VA-35, CAG 8, 2 Med cruises aboard USS Nimitz.

Best 4 years of my life!
