I'm about to begin building the Cessna Agwagon from RCM plans (365).

This will be my first "scale" plane but my second plane built directly from plans.

My question concerns how to address the hinge arrangement shown on the plans for the ailerons and flaps. I'm not sure what the name for this type of hinge arrangement would be (offset?) so I have attached a picture taken from the plans.

I imagine that one would simply install a regular flat-type hinge at the top where the aileron touches the wing, embedding the hinge tabs into the wing and aileron/flap at say 30°. Any suggestions? Also, do these control surfaces need special control horns?

Also, there is a question on how run the control linkage. The plans call for servos installed in the center of the wing along the aircraft's centerline with control linkage running through a bellcrank system. I may do this for the flaps but think I'd rather have two aileron servos each placed directly in the wing and controlling the aileron directly.

In this case, I could have servos accessible via hatches and the control horns exiting said hatch - then connecting a standard linkage on the aileron.

Your ideas and suggestions are most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Zipperneck

This is pretty standard RC stuff. If you use CA-type hinges, the installation method you mentioned will work fine. Check out the Robart web site ( http://www.robart.com/ ) for many more hinge ideas.

Building access hatches for wing-mounted servos is simple. Just surf around RCU for various ideas on how to build a lightweight servo mount in the wing. You don't need a tremendous amount of wood (weight) to do this. One simple method is to make a removable hatch, and attach the servo to the hatch, rather than the wing. It makes servo maintenance easier. Lots of info on this in the "Gliders" and "Pattern" forums.

For linkages, all you need is a short pushrod with a z-bend in the servo end, and a clevis or ball link on the control surface end. Check out the tips on the BVM site, ( http://www.bvmjets.com ) the Sullivan site, ( http://www.sullivanproducts.com/ContSysAccMainFrame.htm ) and the DuBro site. ( http://dubro.com/DU-BRO/index.htm )

That should get you started, with all the standard methods.

OK Mike, thanks for taking the time to reply. I visited the Robart link you provided but the hinge how-to link is dead... just my luck.

Yes, I'm aware of the type of hatch arrangement you mentioned. My Kyosho P-40 has a system like that. Not much to it really. I'd like to attempt a fully enclosed system, however, with no control horn or control linkage showing. That may take some head scratching.

Thanks again for your input.
