I bought a HOB P47 kit the first of the week. It has not arrived yet so I have not had a chance to study it. I was thinking of putting a Magnum 15 on it. I've been chatting in the 1/2a forum and those guy think I'm the devil for want to do such a thing. This kit is used in scale combat is it not? And I think if built right it might handle a 25.

What do yaw thank about it?

The HOB P-47 is not legal for RCCA 2610 Scale Combat because it is not within 10% of 1/12th scale.

Aside from that, it is balsa and would shatter when it bumped into anything making it unsuited for combat.

The HOB kits are great sport planes when powered by mild .15s (your Magnum would be perfect for it). Once upon a time I had their P-51D, a few of their '109s and several of their Fw-190s. IMHO, a .25 would be far more than it would need for power.

The CD is not allowed to measure the airplane, only to inspect it from a distance of 15 feet. If the CD determines that the plane resembles what the contestant claims it is, it's legal. A plane that's obviously a piece of gutter pipe painted gray with stars-n-bars and invasion stripes is not a P-51.

I know one of the members of the RCCA rules commitee.

The CD is in fact allowed to measure an airplane if they see fit. The CD must inspect from 15', but there is nothing that says he can not request a tapemeasure be held against the airplane while he reads it from 15'.

Most do not measure. This plane could probably be pushed past most CDs. Who would be willing to take the chance that the CD might catch it?

The fact remains that the plane in question falls outside of the 10% rule.

The kit arrived late yesterday. I have given it a once over and I believe a 15 will wok just fine. I may have to modify the firewall location to make the wooden cowl work. That may also offset the added weight for balancing. I think that the ellipticle wings are beautiful. But as Demon said I think it will be a wee bit fragile to reall get in close and dice it up.

Bucket, I have built and flown this plane. It flys fantastic, but I think you will be sorely dissapointed if you point this one towards combat. the plane is just not beefy enough to withstand that much power or speed. I flew mine on a norvel 074, and got wonderfull performance. you might be able to stuff a 15 into it, but the engine weight will have to be compensated for. You can see a very small picture of mine in the SMALLs article in this months MAN. Good luck, she's a nice little plane.
On another note, if you want a nice p-47 kit that is the same size, but is designed for a 15 to 25 sized engine, look at the one that Hobby-hangar sells. its designed by uravitch, and is a full lazer cut kit, very nice.
