i just got the walkera dragon fly 35 for christmas. im only 17 and i have it hovering about 3-5 feet. this is my first heli ever. i have only messed around with helis on real flight but not actually learning how to fly them. i flew planes and they were pretty boring to me. my dragonfly wasnt trimmed in at all and the servos were in the wrong plugs on the reciever. after about 3 days i had it trimmed in and i was getting it off the ground. i read a couple of pages about people complaining about how they cant get it off the ground and how it isnt balanced and how they cant trim it and the pitch isnt working. it just takes time and patience. sit there and look at it, see how the parts work and what does what. it isnt hard. this is my first rc heli and im pretty much flying it now. i havnt been using a simulator either. i just have a little problem with the tail rotor. its almost maxed out going right to keep the heli straight. which leaves me with no right rudder. if any one knows how to fix this little problem id appreciate there advice, thnx

BMX DUDE07,

You might try and flip the reverse switch on the gyro.

Got it working! I had to loosen the main motor AND the tail rotor boom and adjust them till they just meshed; then retighten. THen I fired it up and moved it to half throttle (not realizing that in all my messing around trying to get it to lift off the ground it was now about 7 degrees of lift at 1/2 throttle) and it LEAPED into the air; then LEAPED into my door frame breaking the pitch connectors of both blade mounts and reshaping the blades. Total flight time 2 seconds? Once the epoxy sets we'll try it again tethered....

Hi Guys! Got a new Dragonfly 35 for christmas and have let myself in for a whole lot of expenditure. Firstly let me say that this is the first r/c anything that I have owned. So when I say I am new! I mean it!.

Ok! The first thing I noticed was the crappy recharger and battery on the unit. THe standard battery and charger get realy hot within the first 5 Min of charging. The green light stay on the charger all the time regardless of the condition of the battey, so I am not sure when the battery is charged or not. Let me say that the dude that wrote my instruction manual (in engrish!) could be possibly the only guy able to understand what he wrote, because I could understand anything past the contents page!

The first thing I need to know is I am interested in purchasing a Li-Po battery (to replace my new you beaut piece of crap Standard Ni-cad) Prefer 1800Ma or 2200Ma and should I be concerned about the weight of the battery. The 1800Ma is 115Grams and the 2200 is 145 Grams will the 2200Ma be to heavy for the Heli?

Secondly, my heli looks like a fish flopping around on the floor at full throttle. I have loosened up the rear tail rotor gearing and am thinking it's gotta be the pitch of the blades. As a newbie I am not totally sure what I am doing however I think I have to 'PLAY' with the PLT/PZT knobs. At first thought I believed it was the crappy battery so if you could give me advise on the first question then I will order immediatly! (underpowered and all with the Stnd battery) If it is the pitch of the main rotor blades does any one have a 'how to guide for dummies' on how to adjust (preferably with pictures).

Remember I am a complete Novice so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not asking for much just want to see the Heli leave the ground on its onw steam else I will be assisting it getting airborne with a swift kick in the tail rotor.

I am a newbie myself (althought I did used to fly gas airplanes; back when Carter was US president) BUT I am a one-trick pony here. When you say you loosened the tail rotor did you also loosen the main MOTOR itself? Mine was so tightly pressed against the main gear that it was probably consuming half its power just trying to turn it. I had to slide it out some so it meshed properly, then reposition the tail boom. It was AMAZING how much more RPM I got when I did this; it must have doubled. Also the motor had been getting relly hot during my fish flopping, now actually lifting off it does not get as hot. I would like to put a heatsink on it somehow.

Also my "pitch control links" (my terminology, dont know what they are really called - the highest vertically oriented connection on the bird - has a screw length adjustment at both ends) on the main rotor head were not set to the same length out of the box, so I had one in coarse pitch and one in NEGATIVE pitch; no way that could work.

Now I'm going belt on my #35 and also ordered some t-rex main and tail blades for it also. I've put in a futaba pcm receiver, sjpropo brushed esc, gws 6g servo for tail(boom-mounted). Will be hearing from local hobby shop when he gets my brushless setup. The chopper has been good to me, so I'll give it some back.

The belt conversion kit I ordered:

Hey pischla, once you get the belt drive going tell us how the heli performs. I recently received my heli and had problems getting it off the ground. Ended up loosening up the gearing on the tail at both the motor end and tail rotor end and started to get some better movement. After going over the heli before its next flight I found that the plastic cog nearer the motor had started to deteriorate, so I got that replaced. Next the Carbon fibre Tail shaft rod broke. I know it only a $5 item to replace however I already sick of the tail rotor issues that have been plaguing me .

If the belt drive ends up being any good I might invest some $$$$ and upgrade.

Also, has any one purchased any Li-po batteries for their #35. I saw a seller on E-bay (Happy-buy) selling the 1800Ma 11.1v battery and charger for around AUD$65. Has any one bought any of these Li-po's and are they reliable. My stock standard Ni-cads last for 4 Min which is enough for me to check if every thing is OK then they go flat.

Hi mr5alty,

Will let you all know how it's working with the belt, hopefully I'll receive it this week. Too bad I won't get my brushless, but it'll be nice to try the belt on the original motor.
I bought 2 2200mAh lipos of ebay you can see pics of them here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=3383696, they work great. I'll see if I can get some more info for you about them.

Pischla

I was looking at purchasing this battery and charger from ebay Item No 6026698741 The charger and Battery come up to $60 which seem reasonable! Tell us what you think? The Ebay screen shots it looks OK to me but it does not mention any discharge rate. I have noticed that sl lot of sellers recommend the 10C discharge rate for the Dragonfly. Do you know if the Rate effects the performance of the Heli or does it impact flight time.

By the way the pictures of the Heli look good! I was wondering how to fit the Li-po's in once I got them! I have heard you have to treat the Li-po's with a bit of kindness ? What has been you experience! The Li-Po's worry me as a newbie as Crashing the Heli is pretty frequent.

By the way thanks for the quick response!

The charger pictured with the battery you've been looking at seems to be the same I got with my heli-kit. Threw it away and bought a Duratrax Ice instead, feels a bit safer when charging.

I have beaten the heli pretty badly and haven't had any incidents with lipos in it, instead I somehow managed to drop a pack on gravel after removing it from the heli and it shorted. Nothing spectacular, just a bit of swelling.

I noticed a lot of difference between the blue 2200mAh(which I got with the kit) and the new 2200mAh 12C batteries from ebay, not so much in flight duration, but the available power.
Probably because of higher C - rating.

I just blew my second 'Tail drive rod' (my wording) on my Dragonfly 35 . The first carbon fibre rod supplied with the Heil broke because one of the bearings seized. The second has only lasted 24 Hours as it sheered the plastic gearing at the tail rotor when the Heli had a extremely bad landing. Has any one else been having these sort of issues? . I can only assume that I have the tail blades on to tight therefor it puts a lot of pressure on the gears when the rear rotor blades comes in contact with the ground. Can any one supply any hints other than loosening the blades! I can only assume that moving to a belt drive system could be my long term answer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Pischla - I thought that swelling of a Lipo battery is extremely bad and that once it starts to swell it time to bin it! Tell us how difficult it is to convert to Belt drive as I might end up getting one if I continue to screw the Tail drive rod.
