XB-70 valkyrie I was there when the first one was built by North American at plant 42 in Palmdale CA. I remember it well she was one very pretty bird. THe only 2000 mile an hour bomber of her size the US ever had.
I know a few models have been built I would love to see one fly just once. I guess I'm showing my age here.

r1morris,

My father worked on the XB-70 at Plant 42. He used to tell me about how #1 was so much heavier than #2 due to lots of patchwork and problems with the honeycomb structure. Still an outstandingly beautiful bird.

I also recall him bringing home some instrumentation and stuff from the crashed one that he had found at the local scrap yard years later. At least I *think* it was from the XB-70.

Well Dago, you can always make a trip out to the Mojave Desert and visit the crash site... There's still pieces of the plane to be found out there. Small pieces, but pieces nonetheless. If you do a search for the plane on the net, I'm sure the site that documents recent finds at the crash site will come up for you. I seem to recall they mentioned lots of little honeycomb bits... some up to 2". Also some interesting then and now photographs taken from the same viewpoint of the crash site.

I think my Pa told me that #1 weighed around 100,000 lbs more than #2.

To this day I think of that crash as one of the most tragic experimental mishaps to have ever occurred.

The XB-70 is definitely a milestone in aircraft design & construction! This fellow's website is awesome: http://www.labiker.org/xb70.html

My Dad tested the engines here at Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma, TN. They even set up a throttle quadrant and controls with instrumentation and the pilots came here to learn how to run the engines. I remember seeing a picture of Bob White with some of the engineers my Dad worked with operating one of the engines in the test cell.

There was a small free flight kit with a profile fus, and was for a .049 pusher. I have a kit, and I also built one years ago, and boxed out the profile fus. and made it three chanel. It flew great, and lands really scale...nose high.

Soft landings, always,
