Here are a few shots of how I installed and flew one of the new SPT-5 Turboprops from Jetcat! Spins a 25x12 Mejlik at 8100rpm in the air with the engine set to run 158,000. The top rpm permisable from the stock ECU is 170,000rpm,,,, WOW! Verticle on takeoff was awesome! I know its got a prop on the front but its still a jet,,,, right.

Tim .

So Tim

I have received the SPT-5 and have been looking for a suitable prop. Where did you get the
25x12 prop? I have an Airworld Turbo Raven that its going into.

TIA

Yeah we'll be at Fla. jets with TWO of them! I was kind of worried at first but Frank said to bring them so we are. They both belong to my friend and Fireworks sponsor for the Jets Over the Heartland jet meet Ralph Braun. The other engine is in a 14' Cessna Caravan.
Desert Aircraft is where I get my props from and so far I have only tried the 24x12 and a 25x12. The engine seems happy spinning both but you need to watch your temps. If you put to much load on the engine the temperatures go up. With the 25x12 on the ground and the ECU set to the factory setting which I believe was 163,000 the engine got to hot. The ECU lets you monitor of course all kinds of stuff but the startup screen tells you the temp, prop rpm and the engine rpm and the suggested engine rpm. When I ran it the first time the ECU was set at 163,000 and the prop put such a load on the engine that the ECU would stop acceleration at 161,500 as the temperature reached 750 and the prop rpm was 7100! Now I have run the engine and monitored the prop rpm and turned down the engine rpm till I had 6500 on the prop rpm. The temps were 625 degrees at this point and that works for me. On the last flight of the Raven with the parameters set as above the highest prop rpm recorded was 8100rpm. I only left the throttle open comming out of one turn toward the end of the flight and the prop tips went supersonic! That was with the 24x12. As the airplane belongs to Ralph I can't fly it as much as I would like but am very greatful at the stick time he lets me have. He is supposed to fly the Caravan and I will fly the Raven. So Rocketman I guess I'm the one with the dirty sanchez! Our dialup doesn't let me post to many pics at once but I'll include a few more. Glad to see everyone excited as its definately a killer engine with loads of power. 24' C-130 ????

Guys

I've been flying a Graupner Raven since end of October last year, the 24 x12 prop seems the best choice for this aeroplane at around 20lb weight.
The 26 x 10 is also an option (with more tip noise) I'm using the Menz wood props-watch the carbon props if you are doing aerobatics, some are very heavy and put a lot of load on the shaft.
I get 12 minutes on a 2.25ltr tank.
Starting is like all JetCat units, I do run the engine on the ground for around a minute to ensure the fuel/oil lube is getting to the gearbox.

Yes there is a delay but its very short. The ECU is set to go from idle to full power in 3.5 seconds from the factory. I was playing with the GSU and found you could shorten this number but felt if that is where they set it I'll leave it alone. When flying both airplanes touch and go's were not as much a preplanned event as they are with a jet . I would say the airplane traveled about 100' before full throttle was achieved. A turbine powered jet takes as much as probably 500' depending on the engine in question. Also the same goes for the turboprop,, don't let the engine get below 1/4 throttle and throttle up is almost instantaneous. Thats not so easy on the Raven but the Caravan has alot of drag so it can be flown to the ground much easier.

Tim.

Tim,

I know you can set the RPM limit on the Jetcat ECU but can you set an EGT limit with the turboprop? Or is it like you did prop/test/and watch the EGT onthe GSU.
