Hey guys, I've got a few questions for anybody that has flown a Ziroli Bearcat before. I am getting close, the fuselage needs final sanding before painting and my wing is ready for primer and filling.

I have a Sachs 5.8 for power, I would like a prop recommendation. I have a 24x12, 24x14, and a 24x16 right now. I was thinking that I may need to go with a 26x10 to help it slow down a little, what do you think?

Another question, one person I have spoken with seems to think this thing is going to land like a rocket. Will it slow down and land at a reasonable speed? With or without flaps? And when using flaps, how much elevator should I mix in to start with, or is it even needed?

One last question, what weights have you seen that still fly well? I have already taken everything out of the fuselage, I should have weighed it first so I could get an idea of my weight, but I didn't.

Thanks in advance,
Alan

A MEZJLIK 24X12 THREE BLADE IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO.

Barry,
Thanks for the reply. The bearcat had a four blade prop, if I went with anything besides a two blade I would want to go with a four blade. That would be cheap wouldn't it!! Have you seen any Bearcats fly and noticed the landing speed of them with and without flaps?
Thanks,
Alan

This thing is a big *****cat. That THICK airfoil makes a ton of lift and you can slow it down. The plane decellerates quickly when power is pulled off and the flaps are very effective. Q75 is plenty at 33#. Your problem will be ground clearance with anything more than a 24 in prop.

SOMEBODY SLAP ME!!! I KNOW A BEARCAT HAS A FOUR BLADED PROP!! I JUST DID'NT ENGAGE THE BRAIN CLUTCH BEFORE SHIFTING GEARS. I'VE BEEN AROUND CORSAIRS, LIGHTNINGS, AND THANK GOD FOR JU87 STUKA'S TOO LONG. MY HUMBLE APOLOGIES. MY HEART WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE. HOW ABOUT A MEZJLIK 24X10 "FOUR" BLADE. THAT SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER. THINK SCALE.

Thanks 454,
I am using the 5.8 because I had one laying around looking for a home. I am glad to hear that I won't be landing a rocketship. I have had a few planes like that before and they are just not fun to fly when you have to make a perfect landing every time(not that I don't, it just relieves the pressure)haha. So you think the 24x12 or 24x14 will be OK? Thanks for your input. I hope to be in about that same weight range (33-35 lbs.)
Thanks again,
Alan

That's OK Barry, it happens to the best of us. That four blader would be pretty expensive wouldn't it. Where can you get them, I might want to look into one later. It would look good and I don't think I will be lacking the power for it!!
Thanks,
Alan

NOT WITH A 5.8 I'M NOT GOING TO LIE TO YOU, THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. THE MEZJLIKS ANY HOW, THE ZINGERS, ALTHOUGH NOT AS EFFICIENT AND BREAK EASIER ARE VERY REASONABLE. I HAVE A ZINGER 24X10 FOUR BLADE ON MY GIRLFRIENDS 1/4 SCALE STALLION. IT LOOKS AWESOME. THE MUSTANG WONT FLY 150MPH WITH IT,BUT IT SURE WILL TURN HEADS. THE PROBLEM WITH THE ZINGERS IS THEY HAVE A LARGE HUB THAT TAKES AWAY SOME OF THE BEAUTY OF A SMALL SPINNERED WARBIRD. I HAVE SEEN THE ZINGER HUB MACHINED TO CONTOUR THE HUB. THAT WOULD'NT LOOK BAD, AND WOULD BE CHEAP.

Either prop you mention will do. I am running a 22x8-14 Zinger on a 5.2 Sachs in my P47, get about 7100 on the ground.

Thanks Lenny and Barrry,
I guess I will start with the 24x14 and work from there. Maybe one day I can afford to try a four blade prop.

So lenny, let me get this right. You have a Bearcat, a P-47, and a 5.2 Sachs? You should be shot!! (just kidding) I have a good friend that has a 5.2 in his Corsair, that is one sweet engine. I don't think there is a big power difference between the 5.2 and the 5.8. You wouldn't have an extra 5.2 laying around that you want to give away do you???? The P-47 is going to be one of my next warbirds. When I finish the Bearcat I have a Ziroli Corsair to finish up(it's about 50%) then I will be looking for a P-47. At the rate I am building now(I just finished a house and am starting on my new shop) I should have all three going in 20 or 30 years.HAHA

Thanks again for your help guys,
Alan

Good radial motors, how did I let this post go for so long without catching it....

http://www.airrayinc.com/raybear19.JPG

Bama, the Brison 5.8 is my favorite motor. A brute of a power plant, that has been very reliable for me. Now the support equipment that go around is a concern, as there is a ton of vibration from this powerhouse.

The above is/was my American Eagle Bearcat, specs are very very close between the Ziroli and the AE. For two blades I tested everything from a 22x12-14 to a 26x10.

The best all around prop is the 24x12. Drop to the 24x10 and your speed will go up immediately. So does the noise. For some of the best zoom climbs you will ever see, the 26x10 was outstanding. It also is the most impressive on the nose of the cat.

I too will be trying out some 4 blades from Zinger, a 22x10 for starters, and swap about for best results.

Your landing gear will make or break you on this plane, you will need nice tall struts to keep from doing damage on landings.

As mentioned the plane slows down well, but it dont want to set down. It will ground effect till the cows come home if you have any head wind and flaps deployed.

There are more pics of it above.
You will love the plane engine combination. I guarantee it.

Ray

I have seen all of Nicks planes fly.....They're excellent flyers and the BearCat is no exception...I have his P-47, F4u and B-25. The BearCat has a wide landing gear and slows up nicely with flaps...as in most "warbirds" making a nice wings-level stable approach with a few clicks of power in and gently reducing power near touchdown will provide you with a "grease-job" most of the time....keep in mind though that this "cat" has a shorter fuselage and proficient use of the rudder is recommended.....Bill

Thanks for the info guys. I am already looking forward to flying it. The wing and tail incidence is perfect and the washout is perfect too. That leaves only the balance to make it a good flier. That gives me a good feeling. I have worked on it for so long that I have that feeling that I know it will fly right. I have put a lot of scale detail on it and it should be one of the nicer Bearcats around. I have a sliding canopy, dummy radial, functional scale exhaust, elevator and rudder linkages are hidden, and I have hidden all the switches and other goodies. It should look good anyway. Maybe it will fly as good as I plan on it looking. I may buy a digital camera soon. If I do, I will post some pics of my progress.
Thanks for the input,
Alan
