I purchased a VMAR engine test stand after reading the RCU review as well. I have to agree the review sounds like they were looking at an entirely different test stand! Mine had rusted bolts right out of the box and like everyone else, all of the holes were off which required redrilling.

The largest engine I have run on mine is a Saito 100. It works OK for engines up to this size but I'd be leary about anything much bigger.

From reading the earlier posts I get the impression that Richmond has replaced some of the parts on this stand. I wasn't sure what you guys were referring to when you were talking about plywood parts coming apart. Mine has the metal "L" brackets but on mine these hold two adjustable uprights that seem to be made of a whitish composite type material. The engine mounts are then attached to these.

Just reading the specs on the VMAR site seemed a bit too optomistic at the time. I mean, really, how can you have a test stand with two standard style engines mounts that will fit both a .049 and a 1.80+?

The best, and least expensive (in terms of extra dollars spent) is your airplane. Running the engine in on the airplane means that conditions like fuel tank height, engine orientation, cooling and vibration levels are the same for breaking-in and actual use in the airplane. You don't get those nasty surprises when you take your nicely broken-in engine off the stand, put it in the airplane and suddenly it runs like c**p.

The plane is what I normally use, but here lately, I can't get this magnum .91 fs to run inverted. Its aweful hard to test the motor with the plane upside down...

I use the J Tec Giant test stand from Tower Hobbies, I've run everything from a Fox 40 to a Saito 120 on it and plan to break in my Saito 180 which I feel this stand will easily hold. I bolted mine to a piece of 3/4 inch plywood, about a foot square with a mount for a fuel tank behind the stand, I fuel proofed all the wood with a couple coats of finish resin. I use a peice of music wire slipped under the rubber bands that hold the tank down, as a throttle rod the friction from the rubber bands helps maintain what ever throttle position I select. I secure the whole deal to a bench with a pair of large C clamps. I prefer to break in a new motor on a test stand verses on an airplane as it can be quite messey at 1st with all the very rich running, final tuning, of course need to be done on the actual airplane before the 1st flight with the new motor.

I purchased a VMAR engine test stand after reading the RCU review as well. The one shown on the web, is the one shown in the RCU article, BUT... I received one with corroded screws, the firewall is now fiber composite, and the aluminum engine mount is also fiber composite. I contacted them and they got upset when, after 3 days of emails to my priority request using their "customer service database" stating acknowledegments and "We're looking into it", I sent them an email that I was contacting my credit card company. I didn't expect some superior test stand, but I did expect the one in the photo on their website. They also got upset, tried to blame me for expecting too much and not trusting their "engineers", and ended the call with some nasty comments and a "I'll refund your money after you ship the item back". I pay the shipping, of course. Twice at that point. Don't expect good customer service. The holes in the engine mounts didn't line up to mount to the firewall pieces correctly and the holes in one of the engine mounting bar sets weren't drilled the same as the other. I had already fuel-proofed it and replaced some of the bad screws/nuts. I contacted RCU, and the editor who wrote the review still hasn't pulled it. He should read this forum.
