Looks like Frank flew the Yak..More pictures up on cardens web site. The more I look at the model the more I like the lines, even with the smoothed cowl.. Hope Frank speaks up with the fllight characteristics soon I am thinking of getting on the list for the second run...

Okay guys.. after the 5 initial flights that were put on the YAK in Fla. I can honestly say that this is the best plane I've flown. As noted above in Mike's post, there was only 2% on 1 side of the rudder/aileron mix and none anywhere else. I've not seen a plane that was this neutral. The uplines and downlines were perfectly straight with no "cheating" mix needed. Snaps were very crisp and dampened well on exit. We were lucky on the CG, as it needed no movement to make it right. I can't wait to fly it again.

Last I checked Yak's don't have full wheel pants.

but the bird looks good

The YAK 54 has wheel pants, the 55 does not only half pant. I don't even use the half pant on my CA 2.6 YAK..

Sorry Moken the full scale Yak 54 uses the 1/2 pant as well although some owners may have removed them.

I also wish the companies, all of them EF, Quique and now Carden would get the shape of the gear correct as well... not just straight. Look at the angles on these things. Closest I have seen is on the 72" Yak from GSP. you would think this would be easier to do with CF gear.

Chckout these photos of full scale Yak 54s.

I talked to dennis last week and he said they are in the middle of the first run of Yak kits. If I can remember I think he said somewhere around June to ship. The second run i think he said was in August. Dont quote me on these but I think thats what he had said. The best way to find out is to call him. He will answer all your questions. problem is with just Caroline and Dennis there, they get quite busy on the phone and the phone is busy alot but just keep trying. I talked to him for about 30min. last week and he gave me the rundown on both kits, the Yak and the 260. We spoke about my flying style and what I wanted in flight characteristics, and he thought the Yak would be a perfect match. The Yak will be my 8th Carden, and I have to say I am a very happy customer. Every airplane with the exception of one is still flying and the oldest one is almost 8 years old. great Kits.

I have seen Frank Nolls plane in person and it looks nothing like an Extra. That plane was the prototype and I would like to hear from someone that is building a production kit.

I saw Frank's plane in Toledo and I thought that the fuse sides were straight, that the only round part was the cowl and that it went from the round cowl to the flat fuse sides without any sort of taper, it was just an abrupt switch. Are the production planes the same way?

Hey Guys, Here is a pic of my new Carden Yak. All I can say is WOW this is the best bird I have flown. This airplane is so agile and flies so well. I have about ten flights on it now and I have not put any mixing in it yet there is so little needed that I just have not wanted to stop and do it. There is a short clip on Cardens web that a buddy of mine took with his still camera I am working on getting a better video that shows more of its ability. As far as the question on the fuse sides they are flat but so is the real one from the thickness of the wing back, if some one wanted they could make a balsa block to fill this gap but it really isnt that noticable the flat side of the fuse is only 5 inches thick.

Hi David, your plane looks great.

Like David said, the sides are only flat for a height the same as the height of the wing. There is a small transition from the cowl to the sides but easily can be taken care of if the builder likes.

David, did you build yours?

Mine is still in boxes in the shop. Should be starting soon as I finish a longer building table. Ran into some hicups last week (luan doors are NOT always flat ).

.........Mark

I noticed that you didn't say that it looks like a Yak. Personally, I think it looks like an Extra 330L with a cowl from a Sopwith Pup. The lines on the canopy might make one think of a Yak, but that's just paint. Can anyone tell me what makes it look like a Yak? I'm having a hard time here.

Woops you are absolutely right it doesn't look like a scale Yak...Although how many people buy a Carden airplane to win a scale rally? These planes are "purpose" built to win flying contests (
