Tony,
The reason that they don't match is that the side view does not incorporate the taper in the fuse. In other words, when you build the side fuse pieces per "side view" of the plan, then take the two fuse sides and place them on the "bottom view" of the plan, the sides will come up about 1/4" short. Think of it this way, if you take 2 pieces that are lets say 30" long, then spread them apart like the taper on a fuse, they will start to get shorter.
Mind you, in my earlier post I said that there was no mention of this, and I was wrong on that point. In fact if you look at the plan, Carden does mention that you need to add to F2 in order for the sides to match up. I just didn't see the mention of it on the plan. Typical of the way I build; I build first, and read later...laughs

Again, as I said, it's not a big deal. Just keep it in mind for when you build the fuse sides.

sam,

you misunderstood my question. i understand what you mean about the sides not fitting, i was just curious if you had talked to dennis about this problem or not.

but i see you found a note on the plan, so its no big deal anyways.

No I didn't speak to Dennis about it. Mind you, if I did call, the only suggestion I would make is to perhaps draw the allowance for the taper on the side view. Perhaps he could draw dotted line extentions on the side view, so it illustrates the required length to incorporate the taper. Just a thought.

I just looked over my plans. It says to build the Fuse side trusses on the side-view of the plans. Then you need to add a 1/4" balsa filler on the front of the F1 to make up for the taper difference.

Here's where I am so far. Lightened the motor box and one side of the fuse done. Should have a lot more time now that the holidays are over. For the fire wall I was just thinking about drilling out one hole directly behind the motor. Maybe 3" or so in size. Not sure I want to do much more that that. The fire wall is the heaviest hunk of wood in the kit. Any thoughts?

Mark,

Looking real good. You really went to town on the lightning of the motor box. Did you get a chance to weigh the pieces before and after the lightning?
As far putting a hole on the fire wall; I did it on mine, and I think it will be fine as far as structural integrity is concerned. I even put two smaller holes to the left side of the box.

Here is a pic of my firewall, you can sort of see where I cut the holes.

I use SWB motor mounts and always cut the hole in the firewall to match the center hole of the SWB, I think it's probably 2" in diameter. Not much, but ev ery gram counts. There are no probelms with doing it. Looking good guys. Are you planning to run cans? If so are you planning to sheet the motor box "pipe tunnel" or just cut inserts or leave the holes open?

I'm assuming you'll also cut a lot out of the tail?

Yep, by dumb luck I weighed the before and after parts that are shown in the photo and there's a difference of 271 grams or about 9 1/2 oz. Now keep in mind that was with the full side pieces, not comparing them to the cut outs recommended on the plans.

I didn't build my Carden Extra but looking at the stock attachment of the landing gear on the Extra and now the Yak, the MAJORITY of strength for the gear attachment area is in the 1/2" super hard landing gear rails that are screwed/epoxied to the motor box sides. The large landing gear plate itself gives more torsional stregth than anything else.

I like what you did to the gear. Any weighs on the scrap pieces? How did you cut them out? Endmill?

If you ever get a picture of the front of the firewall I'd be curious to see the lightening hole placement.

I'm planning on running cans. Before I assemble the motor box, I'm going to trace out each hole on the sides that are down in what will be the pipe tunnel. I'll trace the patterns on to 1/16 balsa and then glue back in to form a lighter but still sealed pipe tunnel area. There's A LOT of time on these lightening holes. Hope it's worth it in the end.

As for the tail, I've made some lightening holes in the stab tube doubler so far but that's about it (saved 1 gram by the way ). Not a whole lot you can do on the Yak in the tail. I might cut some large holes in the rudder but I'm not sure I'll like the fact that you can see the holes through the Monokote. Not sure how much weight I'd save. My friend cut four nice size holes in the bottom deck pan of his Carden 260 and it only saved him about 8/10ths of an ounce.

I was thinking of coring out the bottoms only of the stab halfs also so as not to go through the top balsa sheeting. I'll make a jis that allows me to use the dremel and router bit mill away most of the meat without coming through the top. My biggest hope is that I'll save some weight by vacuum bagging and not needing as much glue.
