Mark,

Here is a pic of the front of my firewall. Realize that the fuse is upside down in the pic. I hope this helps.

Did you get a chance to weigh the pieces before and after the lightning?
As far putting a hole on the fire wall; I did it on mine, and I think it will be fine as far as structural integrity is concerned. I even put two smaller holes to the left side of the box.

Here is a pic of my firewall, you can sort of see where I cut the holes.

If you ever get a picture of the front of the firewall I'd be curious to see the lightening hole placement.

Frank,

It's nice to see you involved with this thread and I would love to hear any other suggestions you may have regarding the Yak.

Any of you guys thinking about baffleing the cowl? I had a situation with a Sukhoi that required this to direct air flow. I know this cowl is wide open but I'm considering doing this on mine to aid cooling, opinions?? Photo shows the fix for the overheating engine on the SU-31...Walt

I don't have baffles in the cowl on mine, and have had no issues with overheating. I've even flown multiple back to back flights in high 90's temp. and it didn't show any cooling related issues.

One thing that I did find out was to move the engine forward, so that the prop is a couple of inches away from the front of the cowl. This will help thrust/airflow around the cowl and give you better performance.

Frank

If you measure 2" from the front of the cowl to the backplate you should be ok!

Hi Frank, about what measurement to the backplate did you end up with? I've noticed in the past that QuiQue's prop was always out a little bit further than other planes. Makes sense now.

Thanks........Mark

Thanks Frank!

So your standoffs are about 1 3/4"? Did you use the hardwood dowels or have aluminum ones made up?

I've always used 1" hardwood dowels on my planes when using the 150cc engines. I found out a long time ago that it works like a fuse when problems arise. I had a instance on a G202 a while back. A C/F spinner came apart and took a blade of the prop with it. The insuing shaking from the out of balance prop broke the wood standoffs, and kept the engine from pulling the firewall off of the plane. From then on I've used wood dowels and haven't had one fail in normal use.

What spinner size is everyone going with on this. Anyone else considering an Ultimate shape? I'm debating which spinner to go with, it'll be a Pete's carbon fiber. Thanks Walt

Congratulations, looks terrific. Looks like you tapered the ailerons. What measurements did you use? Have you had a chance to weigh it yet?

Best of luck with the new Yak.

Mark,

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the Ailerons are tapered 4" to 7". With a smoke system installed it weighs in at 39.8 pounds.

Dave,

Yes, it needs a little more vinyl decoration on it. The cowl and the rudder is all vinyl checkers. When I am not so busy I need to get the rest of the design finished up.

Here is a picture of Fromeco's new Badger switch. These work great and are the same footprint as the JR/Cermark switches. They come in brushed aluminum (pictured) we painted to match the scheme. Or they also come in Anodized Fromeco Blue.

Thanks, Bryan

Hey Aerographix, The vinyl on the checkerboard, was it machine cut or did you cut each check by hand. Your plane is beautiful by the way....Thanks Walt

Walt,

All of the vinyl that we do is all computer cut, including the cowling checkers.

Thanks,
Bryan
