Hi guys, yes the xrb is great for flying around the house, but take to a hall and you will see the limitations of it. Only banks one way, maybe a good way of getting into helicopters, not sure, if you go from one of these to say a Humming bird you will find it very tough. It will be like learning all over again. If I fly my xrb for a week at work when I come back to flying my TRex or any of my other Helicopters I have to really think about it, the xrb leads you into a sort of false security about flying, but once you get into it, you realize how good a proper helicopter is. But as I say great for in the house.

I fly my XRB at least 5 times a week with no problems. I have the tethered version so I can fly in my apt. basically the whole day if I want. Below is a link to what I call the Bible on how to set up the XRB and all the preflight checks you have to do. The only thing that is missing from the list is ALWAY ALWAYS check you gears for and tiny cracks or a missing teeth. I learned the hard way when I first bought the heli. And remember if the motors get hot stop using it and let them cool off. By flowing these steps i have my heli trimmed with no vibrations and can hover by itself. Please remember have patients when trimming it is a trial and error until it is correct.

Thanks for the tip on using hot glue on the blades it works great and saves money. (just remember to balance the blades if not vibrations will occur and put stress on the tiny heli.

I have learned now through several months of flying the XRB that it is a "hover trainer," and an "orientation trainer" for "indoor flight only!" I now realize its limitations (which include the near inability to turn or pitch right, regardless of how many times one trims it!). I am not unhappy with what I have learned from this machine. It gives you the ability to crash several times without destroying it (foam blades). However, with that said, once you learn nose in control and figure 8's forward and reverse without having to think about what you are doing you will find yourself no longer "challenged." I have grown bored with its limitations after two months and like Biscuit said, in a large area (gym or hall) the limitations really manifest themselves. Sorry I bought it? by all means "No!" because it has given me the confidence to move up to more difficult heli's which I am now doing. I am simply going to use it now to introduce other younger or older would be heli pilots to the hobby. Skip

Hi Arcticflyer, How you finding the more difficult heli`s? tough I bet, but stick with it, worlds apart from the xrb eh? nice to have full left and right control though. Like you say leave the xrb alone now it will only set you back on your learning curve, let the kids have a go, get them into the hobby.

Biscuit, I just ordered (last week) a Hummingbird FP V3 RTF from Helihobby. I should get it in about (2) weeks. I live 300 miles north of the arctic circle so mail is slow in coming and freight is sometimes bumped for passengers. I have been told that flying a new heli will be like starting over so I am actually looking forward to the challenge. Skip

Yeah, your going to find it kind of hard at first,no hands off hover here, but stick with it and a new world of helicopter flight will open to you. Fast forward flight, bank left and right, it will be a new challange you can be sure of that. Dont forget that training u/c for the first few hops. Still find it hard to think I am talking to someone so far away about helicopters, how did we get by without the pc. Hope its not too cold, good luck articflyer.

Biscuit, No outside flying here...58 below with the wind chill today...a balmy 31 below if you don't count the wind. Nice thing is I'm the High School basketball coach so I can fly in the school gym most of the time. Really looking forward to the Hummingbird! I forget what it was like before the pc. Skip

OMG! I am sitting in NE Ohio at 42º and b_tching about getting cheated out of my "winter" this year (we've only had a couple days of snow & cold, and not very much). Your post makes me count my blessings, Skip. I like the cold, but not THAT cold!

JCD, thanks for that "bible" link. I am going to check that out. My XRB has never been as good as it was when it came out of the box ever since I wrecked it a few times. I have already learned that there is a definite touch to setting it up, and sometimes what seems like a very minor thing is quite noticeable in flight.

Hey Woodymax, what kind of problems have you had with Helihobby? They did good by me on my initial XRB order and I just sent in my first parts order (more boxes of blades ) so we'll see what happens with that one.

    Thanks,
    -Marty

Has anyone tried using different paddles? I was getting fed up with the springing action of the cyclic in that every time I released the controls the model would almost spring back to where it started from. I made some paddles out of 1 mm ply, the same size as the flat paddles but they turned out about half the weight. When I tried flying they were VERY responsive, but there was no damping at all and the model flitted everywhere! Pretty hairy in a small living room I then tried the round paddles without the weights in them, these seem much better. The spring effect is gone and the model more responsive all round. Unfortunately the sideways flight is still there

    Any thoughts?

rotorwash from furniture maybe? I notice it in my XRB and have finally noticed the tendency for it to drift to the left when flying forward...Just an idea because I fly in a pretty big hallway in my house and pick up rotorwash from furniture 4 feet or so away...

We have a discussion of something similar going on over on rcgroups. I use the term "we" loosely, because the guy doing most of the discussing is way over my head a lot of the time, but maybe you guys would find it interesting. I do. I'm just trying to get my XRB back to flying as well as it did when it came out of the box, and seeing some of the same problems you are talking about.

well after i taped my blades i ended up hitting the ceiling just right and i broke off the pice that holds the top wing im not sure what it is called but its broke! i could probably use some glue to fix it but that might put it off balance... is there an upgrade i can throw on there if anyone know what that part is called?? also after i do this repair and fly a few more times i think i will be selling to get something for outside where i can have some more freedom!!

That’s real unfortunate, I know that I've missed the ceiling by inches a number of times and wondered what would happen....

Must admit that it's one reason I don't reinforce the blades too much, at least they are easy to fix! As to the broken bit, look in the back of the booklet that comes with the heli as all the parts are listed.

Someone else has mentioned that http://rc-mushroom.com/ are good for parts, but I've never used them myself.
