I can easily lift an airfoil shaped 1" x 1/4" x 8" piece of balsa, just as I drew the experiment, by blowing through a straw. But I couldn't lift a straight piece of balsa, no matter how hard I blew through the straw.

Adam-one you have got to be a troll. No body could be that convinced that he is right and be so pathetically wrong. Lordy - read the site that you took the figure from, I believe it is one I recommended. Do some reading on the aero sites and then do some reading on vector mechanics, statics will do.

Tim, that is what we are saying. Granted we use flat plates in our little foamys and the lift curve slope is about the same but for this experiment the curved plate is really effective. Enough to make the difference in lifting and not.

However it doesn't do much of anything as far as understanding the statics and dynamics of the wing lifting process.

Ben,
It's rather late here at this side of the globe, I've to go to sleep, so I can work tomorrow morning.
But I'll be back with more facts and references...

Ben-

You are a patient guy - and a pretty good teacher. Unfortunately, you have students who think they are better educated in philosophical aerodynamics than you are in the actual science.

I have learned one thing from this thread. If we all try real hard we can tell anyone (ie, lawyer, doctor, engineer, or firechief) how to do their jobs better than they they do it simply by mixing philosophy with a little science! In some cases, we can come up with new ways for people to do their jobs without knowing a great deal about their work.

I do not know why any of us bothered to go to college to study aeronautical engineering. We obviously did not learn anything of importance. All we had to do is subscribe to this thread and learn the "back-wash" theory.

Who out there in never-never land ever measured back-wash in a wind tunnel. Step forward and tell us about it. How did you measure it? Where did you measure it? How did you plot the data? Did you measure the airfoil back-wash with and without flaps? Did you come up with a Coefficient of Back-Wash and then plot the coefficient versus angle of attack? I would like to see that data. Finally, what full size airplane did you help build using the back-wash data? Don't be bashful, step right up and tell us.

Well folks, it's been fun but all I see at this point is a lot of repitition and arm waving and perhaps just a little finger pointing. I'm going to shut this down and let the just over 200 posts speak for themselves. But to the chief protangonists you've all done a fine job of presenting your sides and offering references in such quantity and quality that I'm sure anyone reading in can figure it out for themselves.

If you want to carry on with further debate between yourselves please confine it to the PM system.
